The symbols "^M" are like "IV", so it means "four people above me", which would be represented by "^4" in the previous system (which < also pioneered!).

< thinks ^'s most recent development is more confusing than ^'s previous one as it makes < think ^ was referring to the thousandth poster above ^, even though < realises that's nonsensical and not true.
