Re: Rayman 2
My CD is fairly old, so I think I'll try using the GOG version. Thanks for the help guys!
Re: Rayman 2
I Recently finished beating Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast. I collected every Lum and experienced everything the game has to offer.
Does anybody know why the PS1 version is so lame and watered down compared to the other versions? Even the N64 version had all the levels, so what's the deal? I Thought CD's could hold more than a cartridge.

Re: Rayman 2
The PS1-version was released right before the PS2 came out and since the PS1-version was so lame, people had more reasons to buy Rayman Revolution for the PS2 which is by far the best version of Rayman 2. If it can be considered one.

Re: Rayman 2
I wouldn't really say 'watered down' just different. It's strange too since the PS1 was a stronger system for storing than the N64. The PS1 version I do think was clearly capable of having everything the n64 version had, they just did something different with it.Sloggy wrote:I Recently finished beating Rayman 2 on the Dreamcast. What? You know the PS1 is far weaker than the N64, you even just mentioned it again to me again over Skype yesterday.Rayfist wrote:I wouldn't really say 'watered down' just different. Re: Rayman 2
I'm not speaking graphically. N64 is 64 bit while PS1 is 32. I'm talking in terms of higher storage here (discs were able to store a lot more), so it's clear the cut levels were capable of being on the PS1.
I said N64 was graphically better, but I do find PS1 was better for storage and other things.Adsolution wrote:What? You know the PS1 is far weaker than the N64, you even just mentioned it again to me again over Skype yesterday.

Re: Rayman 2
It doesn't matter how much storage space you have, you still have to load all those levels to the RAM, and given that the PS1 only has half the RAM of the N64, and the N64 was already being pushed to its limits (hence why it requires an expansion pack (which doubles the N64's RAM, making it now have four times the PS1's) to get the most out of it), I'd say that the PS1 would likely be incapable of running all the original levels.

Nice post edit m8, you look it up? (jk)
I guess you're right. Though I don't want anyone here to think I was saying PS1 was stronger than the N64 as a whole, I was just saying storage, I was really left to interpretation on that sentence.
However, I still do think the PS1 could have been slightly capable of having some of those cut levels, they'd probably have to condense down some textures or something but it certainly seems able to have some of those levels. Can someone remind me what levels were cut again in the PS1 version it's been a while.

Re: Rayman 2
This is basically my current impression of the different versions as someone that's never beaten the game:
Dreamcast - Awesome
PC - Awesome
N64 - OK
PS2 - Too fecking long and really only enjoyable for people that have played one of the above versions.
PS1 - Shit

Re: Rayman 2
Yeah, though with its controls and glitches, it's a tricky endeavour to complete it. R2 PS1 might not have had the capacity to hold R2 in full, but what it did get was pretty good and played well.
Cut levels:
- The final area of the Fairy Glade, in addition to the secret area connected to the Echoing Caves.
- Whale Bay and The Sanctuary of Water and Ice were merged, to become Whale Bay for the PS1 version, holding the first mask.
- The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire's wrong temple was merged with the proper one, with some new stuff on top, giving a five or six level extravaganza.
- The Top of the World, in its entirety
- The first area of the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava is cut down, instead, you start at the entrance. The hallway from the entrance goes directly to what was the beginning of the next level in all other versions, the room with the staircase and caterpillars is removed.
- The first level of the Tomb of the Ancients is removed
- The Warship level in The Iron Mountains is removed, that bit of plot is repurposed for the second level.
- The Prison Ship doesn't have the area where you fight a Ninja Pirate, and activate a Flying Shell, instead, once the second level is completed, you find yourself already on a Flying Shell in the final level.
- The Crow's Nest interior is an endless tunnel instead of a chamber.
Those are just the cuts, some levels were extensively remodelled in addition to the cuts. Some of the differences I actually like, I think I've harped on extensively in the past of my preference for the PS1 version's final boss.
These are from the top of my head, it's been a while since I've played the PS1 version.Rayfist wrote:Can someone remind me what levels were cut again in the PS1 version it's been a while.

Re: Rayman 2
I would suggest playing R2 PS1 at least once, just to see some of the changed level design and extended story. Some of the controls (swimming in particular) are also heavily improved from the other versions, IMO.
Re: Rayman 2
The DS version of Rayman 2 wins for me the award of worst Rayman 2 port ever.

Re: Rayman 2
Oh absolutely. I returned to it recently out of laziness and had to put it right back down again after the Woods of Light. The sound, graphics, controls - all dismal. The 3DS port is so much better.
I haven't played the PS1 version yet, but the comments in this thread make me want to give it a go!

Got it for 5 EUR with one other game for collection purpose, never played it. I have Rayman 3D if I want R2 on the goHaruka wrote:The DS version of Rayman 2 wins for me the award of worst Rayman 2 port ever.
Re: Rayman 2
While the PS1 version is one of the weakest in the visual presentation, I definitely recommend it to give a shot. There are very interesting differences that are not present in any of the other versions, like an exclusive segment for the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire for example.
Re: Rayman 2
PS1 version is definitely enjoyable. Recommended for Vita owners too.
