Ambi, hemi- is the Greek cognate to Latin semi-. See that sexy Hellenic h (Lat. sept-, Gk. hept-)? As 'sphere' was borrowed into Latin from Greek, hemisphere makes much more sense than semisphere, hein ?

Demi- is from French, from Latin dimidium meaning 'divided in half' - related, but not directly descended from the same root in the way semi/-hemi- are. Demi- has much more leeway with regards to the origin of the word it's affixed to. As for why words like semihemidemiquaver exist? Simply necessity.

< has an original Gameboy, but it's near impossible to see unless situated 5cm away from the sun's surface, so < installed a nice mint green backlight to make it visible and still keep that vintage feel.
