I was thinking something along those very same lines. It does convey the sort of style they were going for if you'd imagine it somewhat more toony. Maybe it could've even been a very literal promotional artwork with a subtitle like
"Overcome impossible obstacles - Rayman 2"
or somesuch.

I wish I could help, but I can't remember the code for it. I'm sure some Designer hacker here still has it though.

What the actual hell? Other than the thicker black lines above the eyes and the odd facial expression/eye direction/reflection in eyes making him look completely different, some of the logos and other elements like the background are slightly shifted (Squeezed together?).
I'm so used to seeing the ordinary box art, this just game me a hell of a shock. It isn't photoshopped or anything, it's the default image for Wikipedia's article and I never even noticed it...

That's the NTSC box art, I believe.

The metal things on the strings on his hoody are red, and for some reason the hoodlum in the back has his gun lowered and the black lums look all goofy and stupid. It's as if they removed all the threatening faces and weapoms and stuff... But why...
Please, please, please someone tell me what it is and why it's different, it's creeping me the fuck out.

Hmm, maybe it's a cover for a second print? I actually quite like the Rayman render on that cover. It looks much better than the one used on the first print cover. It's much more polished: for example, they made the amount of lines on the bottom of his left shoe match the amount on the other shoe, they added an orange swirl to the top of the same shoe, his right hand doesn't look ridiculously small anymore, and the colours of his head and hair match his in-game model.
The only other change I like is how the stars are more visible than before. Changing the Hoodlums and cropping everything as much as possible was a stupid idea.

I'm afraid not, what I tend to do is upload to Postimage, which allows for an image to be resized when uploaded, then use that resized image as a link to the original.

You can easily resize some small pictures with filters in Xnview. Sometimes results are suprising.

New filters. I'll test it.
Without resizing we can also use Google, to search other versions of the same image.
