I think that was just an assumption, given that the man was black.Bradandez wrote:Also OCG, you did say this black man's face was the original design for Mr. Dark. Where's the source on that?

Re: Rayman merchandise
I've got to say, even though blackface has a bit of an insulting history, I think as a purely artistic thing it works very well, there's a certain uniqueness about the way the faces are done that evoke a lovable but eccentric persona.
Re: Rayman merchandise
Says you, blackfaces creep me the fuck out.
Re: Rayman merchandise
I am impressed that the seller of the Atari Bible was responsive and very nice to us, in a way he filmed a little better the pages related to Rayman!
I did not know that Mr. Dark was called Mr. Black in early builds, but there are no evidences that if it matches to the black face in the screenshots or if it is only a coincidence since both words are related.

Re: Rayman merchandise
Hmm. Rather than Mr Dark, the blackface guy would seem to me to have been related to Band Land (jazz and all that). But I don't know enough about R1's development to say for sure...
Re: Rayman merchandise
There are some game elements that seem to have been scrapped too. I notice an airbrush, a never seen before character artwork and a carnivourous plant sprite that also did not made to the final build.
I have the feeling that some screenshots are also early versions of the graphism of the game, since it gives a 3D feeling somehow.

I like the one where the castle is visible in the background. Now I have a good reference for what the castle actually looks like, if I'll ever need it. Also, what's the glowy thing with the hat on the hand above the Musician's house?
Re: Rayman merchandise
It seems to be a fairy, perhaps even an early design for Betilla. She has a similar hat. It could be a powerup elf as well, similar to the Flying Blue Elf.
There's a lot of interesting stuff on that page, too: http://i.imgur.com/y0VP7Ru.png (or http://i.imgur.com/gLrITDn.png for a clean image)

- The fairy/elf discussed before.
- Rayman's SNES design, it seems, from the very early stages of the graphics upgrade to the Playstation/Jaguar version
- The SNES designs of the Electoons/Antitoons
- SNES designs of the Stone Men and Tarayzan
- Carnivorous plant?
- A later design of Rayman, he seems a tiny bit taller than his SNES design and a tiny bit smaller than his final one.
- Oh my, they censored the lady's belly in the final version! (They changed the letters on top of his diner too to make it more readable.)
Re: Rayman merchandise
Interesting stuff! I actually didn't notice the carnivorous plant thing until you pointed it out.
Re: Rayman merchandise
There is a fancy looking cloud next to the Musicians house.
I also noticed the Snes designs of various thing like Drolpiraat. I would love to know how many different versions we are actually seeing in these pages.
Re: Rayman merchandise
Is it just me or did the developers make sure to put Bzzit/Moskito in as many preview images as possible?

Re: Rayman merchandise
Maybe it had a bigger purpose in the early versions, or then Ubisoft was just really excited about him. xDTHEdragon wrote:Is it just me or did the developers make sure to put Bzzit/Moskito in as many preview images as possible?

Re: Rayman merchandise
Wasn't there a screenshot from some Jaguar prototype before that contained darktoon-like things that appeared to be from the SNES version?
As for Moskito, he always seems to have been very important to them (cameos in Rayman and non-Rayman games, Origins shoot-em-ups), so I guess it makes sense that they originally wanted more of him in R1.
And oh dear God, it's Audrey II!

Re: Rayman merchandise
Come to think of it I think there was. That other sprite that's like sorta inbetween the SNES and final Rayman though, man that's new to me!
