I have to get MGS4 sometime. IGN gave it 10/10, so I assume it is good.

*decides to download MGS1 for ePSXe*

To get the Big Boss emblem in MGS4, you have to finish the game on the hardest difficulty, in under five hours, without killing a single enemy, being spotted by an enemy, using a special item, using a health-recovery item, or selecting 'continue' if I died.

I got it. It was ridiculously hard.

Metal Gear Solid

Post by Embryonic Hoodbrain »

Created this topic to hear about your guys' opinions on the epic mindscrew that is the Metal Gear series. Which are your favorites? Why do you hate the series? Are you excited for The Phantom Pain? This is where all MGS can be discussed.

I can say Ground Zeroes is the worst one from Kojima, though it's still pretty good, considering what it is. Choosing my favorite is more difficult, but I can actually say my favorite is without doubt it's either Metal Gear Solid on PS1 or Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on PS2. The worst MGS thing is The Twin Snakes on Gamecube, which is a (very subjective opinion imminent) broken, schlocky, over-the-top trash remake of the original MGS. Ground Zeroes has me pretty psyched for The Phantom Pain, as well as its slew of gameplay footage and story trailers. One of my most hyped games of next year, I really want to get a PS4 or Xbox One to play it in 60fps, though if I don't have one in time, Ground Zeroes ran pretty well on PS3, so I hope it's indicative of the main product. Anyway, I'll throw the mic to you guys; sound off! :o

Old topic, deserves to be bumped. I'm super hyped for the Phantom Pain. I became a huge MGS fan last year (Starting with 3 and Peace Walker, both prequels to V), going to be awesome. :)

Okay seriously, why the fuck does everyone hate Twin Snakes on Gamecube? I did like the original MGS better, but I think Twin Snakes was great for a second playthrough, MGS 1 while I loved it, it did tend to fall on the linear side a bit, Twin Snakes offered more ways of being stealthy, I really enjoyed it more Gameplay wise, while MGS1 I think was better for first time players.

My favorite in the series remains MGS 3, and likely not going to change, it's one of my favorite games of all time. The forest environment to the metallic laboratories. It truly is a James Bond type of game, and shows us the beginning of Big Boss. Excellent game. I plan to re buy on 3DS.

I'm soon to order the first and second Metal Gear Solids on PS1 and Xbox, and I'll be getting Phantom Pain probably very close to release. I've been playing Ground Zeroes, it's arguably the perfect stealth-action game.

If you want to learn the Big Boss saga better it's recommended you check out MGS 3 and Peacewalker, both can be played on console with the HD collection and have improved from 30fps to 60 :)

For me, it's because it's rare, and therefore unreachable "wallet-wise"

Like a good chunk of Gamecube games, it is indeed pricey. Gamecube games are just really expensive for some reason. I do plan to obtain a copy, I've only played the game through Dolphin emulator. Even though I liked MGS1 on PS1 more I think they did ruin a few scenes, but otherwise I think Twin Snakes was great. Would LOVE to see a rerelease on virtual console. Metal Gear gets no love on Nintendo consoles sadly...

Hmm, there was an MGS4 thread here: viewtopic.php?p=353140#p353140

Might as well merge and create one whole Metal Gear thread.

They're all part of the same incredibly convoluted timeline, no?

Good point. Metal Gear games aren't really hard to understand the story for though. Timeline isn't hard either.
1, 2, and 4 = Solid Snake
3, Peacewalker, and 5= Big Boss
2, Rising, and Rising 2(Likely happening not announced yet)= Raiden's story

Ya missed Portable Ops :P

Yeah, if memory serves:
MGS3 > MGSPOps > Peacewalker > MGS5 > MG1 > MG2 > MGS/Twin Snakes > MGS2 > MGS4 > Rising

Portable ops was bad, even Kojima wants everyone to forget about that game, even by stating it was canon.

Really? I used to enjoy having WLAN sessions with my cuzzies when I went down to London, fun times...

Ah well, think we're agreed on the main point however, while there are different sub-series, they're all part of the same thread.
