Re: The You Game!
< learned of the death of one of my personal heroes today. And so I write for him a short piece in his memory.
Perhaps many do. He was a man so witty, he could turn common and household objects (a ring, a chest, a boardgame, a lonely rock among a circle of witches) into great focal points for humour. He devised stories and parodies so intricately devoted to their source, that you could be constantly reminded of every line that was drawn inspiration from and given a wicked, amazing twist. I was allowed to pass my English exams comparing his works to Shakespeare's. I was allowed to pass my English exam making my teacher laugh.
I have admired his books, their films, their graphic novels. And I have admired his progress even with his onset dementia. This is the story of a writer whose books I will read to my children, films I will keep in my collection forever.
This man was so absent-mindedly clever that he could paint pictures that didn’t just follow you around the room but went home with you and did the washing-up.
Goodbye, Terry. You've made me laugh more reading single chapters than I have living through several weeks at times. Rest, my Last Hero. Your song will remain.
Such goes the intro of one of my favourite works of a man some of you may knowThe place where the story happened was a world on the back of four elephants perched on the shell of a giant turtle. That's the advantage of space. It's big enough to hold practically anything, and so, eventually, it does.
People think that it is strange to have a turtle ten thousand miles long and an elephant more than two thousand miles tall, which just shows that the human brain is ill-adapted for thinking and was probably originally designed for cooling the blood. It believes mere size is amazing.
There's nothing amazing about size. Turtles are amazing, and elephants are quite astonishing. But the fact that there's a big turtle is far less amazing than the fact that there is a turtle anywhere.
