It was used in the breakout minigame, so it would seem Rayman Advance just took everything straight out of the PC version and remade it for the GBA without removing the things they didn't use

So, I started playing Rayman 1 on PC again. Everything's fine, but I can't figure something out.

While crawling in the left direction, I can easily turn right by pressing the right key (while holding "down" and "jump", of course). However, this doesn't work the other way round for turning left. I try pressing the left key while crawling right, but nothing happens. Does anybody know how it has to be done?

Sometimes keyboards don’t like it when more than two keys at once are pressed.

I've found that while while walking in Rayman Advance (on an emulator of course) the same thing happens but the other way around. Pressing left while Rayman is walking right changes his direction, pressing right while walking left does not. I'm not sure about crawling, though.

I played around a bit with the effects in Rayman 1 by swapping levels and I managed to get Eat at Joe's without the dark effect and other levels with it instead as the effects are not located in the .LEV files :D

Yeah, messing with the location of the LEV files can be pretty fun. The real madness starts when you mess with the WLD files though. :P
Backgrounds and several sprites having messed up colors due to the color palette of each world, the events getting replaced by other things from other worlds and many more. Unfortunately, without additional hacks, you may remain stuck on some places, the only solution to progress being "winmap" or "o8feh".

Oh, what do the .WLD files contain? I've experienced the events being wrong and backgrounds having wrong colors when swapping .LVL files between worlds which completely messed up the game, that was pretty fun :P

They are the files for the worlds, just like how LVL files are for the levels. I haven't analyzed them, but I can tell that they are the ones that control several events based on the number of each level, as well as containing the sprites, sound effects etc. (obviously).

For example, RAY5.LEV is the level that has the dark effect. However, it will give this effect to any level as long as it's named like that and is placed in the "CAVE" folder. The same goes for Boss levels. Once you completed them, you can't replay them (Eg: RAY5.LEV in IMAGE), but you can replay them as many times as you want as long as it has a different number.

Can you move levels from world to world if you just rename them or would they even work in that case?

You can change the order of levels in their respective world, but importing them from other worlds will result in completely messed up levels, due to them reading a different WLD file. Therefore, no, you can't mix levels from different worlds and still have them working fine.

Wait, I got an idea: finishing the game with full dark effect, wouldn't that be fun?

Personally, I wouldn't want to subject myself to that effect for more than one level. It messes with my head!

Wouldn't it be possible though if you swapped the correct WLD file as well? For example, let's say you wanted to get Dream Forest lvl1 to Band Land lvl1, can't you then afterwards swap RAY1.WLD with RAY2.WLD and get the maps to read the correct info? Sure, it would most certainly mess up the rest of the levels, though it should work with the levels you swapped if I understand this correctly.

That's not possible with levels from other worlds in any easy manner as TFDs39 mentioned before, the dark effect probably lies in one of the .WLD files, most likely RAY5.WLD if I got the numbering right. In that case there are two possibilities, both which won't work. The first is to move a level from another world to RAY.LEV, which would mess up the backgrounds color palette as well as the events in the level. The second option would be to rename the .WLD file to the one corresponding to the world you'd want to put the dark effect in, which would mess it up in that world as it would put in the Cave worlds color palette and events there. This might however not be the case if the dark effect is not stored in the .WLD files, though it seems likely that's how it is.
Maybe it'd be possible with the Rayman 1 level hacking things coming together now or with the new map editor? That'd be pretty cool!

You can actually do that and the levels will run mostly fine. However, there will still be a few bugs that you might encounter.

For example, I put all the CAKE levels in the JUNGLE folder and then, I renamed RAY6.WLD to RAY1.WLD. The Candy Chateau levels played normally on the most part, but:
* The music was the Dream Forest one.
* Several sounds were replaced by Dream Forest ones (but not all).
* The floor graphic in Mr. Dark's room was missing.

The music and sound replacement is universal, while other bugs depend from world to world. Another example was when I moved the IMAGE files to CAVE, as well as renaming the WLDs. Several slippery platforms did not work correctly, slowing you while descending and fastening you while ascending.

Looks like the darkness effect will be carried too if the level in CAVE is named RAY5.LEV, no matter the WLD you're using.

That's awesome! That means playing all the levels with dark effect is now possible, though you'll still manually have to change the levels each time I guess. Nothing I'd like to try :P Crystal Palace, the level in my video, was almost impossible unless you knew where every single ring was

When i play the PS1 version of Rayman on the PS2 The music stutters while the PS1 doesnt stutter. It only stutters on Raymans theme and Peaceful peaks. Does anybody know how to stop it happening mid song on PS2?

Your CD-ROM could be scratched. Wipe it with something. Also try enabling Diagnosis on your PS2. It adjusts your PS2 to read discs better.

Or, if you have a modded PS2, then I can send you a bin/cue of my scratchless Rayman disc. You’ll just have to burn it to a CD-R with ImgBurn.
