Mostly from lecture notes and exercises. < finds < learns more in doing than in reading, so < tends to work through programming exercises.

For <'s projects, < has come across things that < doesn't have notes on and needs to Google, such as the time < was trying to figure out how to use COM ports and have them be read from in a separate thread, < eventually found a solution on a Q&A site where someone was asking about a similar problem, < then based <'s code for that part on what they did.

To be honest, < doesn't know what to recommend, folks learn through different means. < thinks perhaps trying to set oneself a simple problem, such as perhaps a basic calculator. And then try to solve the problem, using references where needed. Then build upon that with extras. That's only <'s suggestion though, and <'s very much a novice programmer compared to some very knowledgeable folks here.

So in terms of getting the raw knowledge of what the programming language is, should < just Google stuff or get a book on it? <'s learned a very small basic amount of JavaScript and Python through doing the Codecademy courses and <'s school, but < didn't know there to go next.

Also what language should < start with properly?

Again, < couldn't say. <'s been using C because <'s course involves embedded electronics. C# was used for <'s work on desktop applications, it helps that it's got some similarities to C. It really depends on what ^ wants to do.

< is going to answer these both simultaneously for reasons

For learning code what < used a lot of was Eclipse, Visual Studio (various versions) and free Unity

If game programming is what you wanna aim for < certianly recomends Unity as it's very involved code wise without being too hard to get into. Language wise it already deals with Javascript & Python but also C# which is what < suggests again game wise but the other two ones are not bad to use especially to get you into the just of games programming. Needless to say if you're not into gaming specifically you may not be that keen on it, although it is no bad programming practice otherswise.

Visual Studio is essentially Microsoft's programming program and unless you have Win10 (which has a free version) chances are you need to pay for it, but the interface is especially nice and language wise you have a fine variety to choose from (off the top my head it has most if not all the C languages) and on top of that there are plenty of library plug ins you can find to deal with specific programming, such as physics libraries to deal with games. Essentially it's broad and allows more room to learn what you want but that assumes you do have something in mind.

Eclipse is essentially you're full free programming language and deals with Java (Plus others I think? I mostly used Java here) and if you like mobile apps, google I think has a version which comes with specific scripting and debugging for making apps. This is the program I found most frustrating to use but not enough to not recomend it to you, Java is also not too bad a language either and once you get that then C# is very similar to it so you can learn that easily.

Only other stuff < has used are specifics for Database/SQL programming and one ghastly thing for Python but alas, < hopes gave you some idea

Hmm, isn't Visual Studio 2015 free for anyone, regardless of OS? < needs to check that again.

EDIT: Yeah, Visual Studio Community. < sees Xamarin comes with it as standard, makes sense given MS did acquire them. So if you're ever interested in making mobile apps, there's an opportunity for that too.

< also points out the fact that Unity site comes with a buncha tutorials for code in both 2D and 3D spaces which < absoluetely recomends looking at first

< just found an online game shop, and it has a whole section just for Rayman. The lowest priced item is Raving Rabbids, which is good because that game is garbage.
