I know what you mean, though I think there's a lot to be said about the esotericism of the first two albums, and I wonder whether Matt's felt whatever made him write that kind of stuff since then, and whether he's felt whatever made him put on this kind of a show since even before then:

Given that this is a pre-first-album gig he's quite new and his vocals on a technical level aren't so great, but there's an incomparable amount of emotion put into it. 1:57 and onward sends shivers down my spine; it looks and sounds like he's about to burst into tears, and the solo is so good.

Those early gigs are awesome, they definitely have something a little more personal to them. I've never had anything against early Muus in that respect, it's all very edgy angst-ridden stuff but they never did it in a way where it feels too cringe-worthy. If I'd known the band prior to all their later releases I'd probably have guessed they would actually take more of a mature direction and slowly substitute the dramatic sound for something more introspective, like Radiohead.

I don't really care that they're making music that caters to big stages and singalong anthems now, but coming back to the idea of them turning over to something more experimental, I can't imagine they'll still be churning out the same YA novel lyrics and massive performances 10-15 years down the road.
