It's a nice saying but in reality, unions mostly serve to enforce the strenghs of the dominants. See TTIP.

Actually, as a guy who had to cross the border every day for the 18 first year of his life, I'm all for the EU, or at least Schengen. It's nice to think that you can go anywhere without worrying about the legality of doing so, which was a nightmare when I was a kid.

Come on... The USSR was a good idea, when you think about it, it provided education and culture for all the persons wishing to have it, and also the equality between everyone is a good concept, back then middle east was a lot more stable than now...
The problem is that you confuse it with the things that Stalin did, do not forget that he really perverted the goals of this union because of his paranoia.
Even Lenin didn't wanted him to be his successor.

Ah yes, TTIP. Supposedly "dead in the water". Not sure how true that is, but I'm almost certain that were Ireland not an EU member, we would have licked America's backside three times over in the time that TTIP has been talked about. So the "strength in unity" thing isn't quite completely hogwash.

Yep, that's the anti-corporate perspective that turned me more towards leaving. Just sounds like the TPP's twin to me, and at this point I'm about done trying to respect anyone in office who's pushing for these "trade" deals. We didn't even know the TPP existed prior to Wikileaks, and then suddenly the government was committed to ensuring we know just how great, well intending, and progressive it is - they just didn't want us to know about good news!

It sounds like a total corporate wishlist to me and I wonder why every time we get to hear just how much better things are gonna be, they never mention how exactly "corporate tribunals" are going to enhance our lives? My only hope is that Trump is somehow not bullshitting on this one issue and he actually genuinely opposes it, but even then we're just talking about just one member of a large multinational deal.
 
It is essentially TPP's twin. I too am sick of the likes of Brian Hayes telling us not to ruin it, that he'll do everything in his power to make it a "good deal for the Irish people", whatever that's supposed to mean. (Funnily enough I happened to learn on Sunday morning that he's a fan of Keane, small world.)

@Ad: Could you be a tad more specific?
