Chimney finally catches up with the group, plodding over with lumbering mechanical steps. Each time his legs heave the bulky metal frame of his body a step closer, the sprockets on his knees strain, fighting against the mud and rust that clog the many chains and gears in his body.
Arriving at the opening, Chimney stops beside his fellows. The sound of an adjusting aperture can be heard as he analyses the strange figure, before he turns his head to face Udongo and Shrooblord beside him.

Master takes a moment to collect himself after being awed by Udongo's graceful entrance. Thankfully, while he was recollecting himself, Shrooblord had begun making conversation with this mysterious merchant. Taking care not to breathe in the fumes this time, Master stands besides Chimney and awaits the keeper's response.

Day 1. Dark Forest, Market Glade
As Dog Food approached the market stall to check out whether there was anything lying around not immediately visible to a first glance, there was a thump and the sound of a scuffle below the counter. You heard a muffled yelp and a bang on wood.

Much like before, the cloaked figure made no response. But
Shrooblord hailed him and so his eyes fixed on the knight. They flashed red and quickly they darted over the other companions again, before fixing themselves on Shrooblord's once more. He stared into the knights eyes for quite a while, but gave no answer.

Udongo Mtu beside him, and especially the flower perched upon his shoulder, attracted his attention. The brim hat lifted ever so slightly, the figure gesturing as it finally spoke.

The faintest of sounds exited the figure's dark, unseen face. You struggled to only barely make out the following words:
"Most interesting. No encounters with the flower have previously shown to leave the subject alive. I must study your remains for the answers as to why you did, after we're done with you."

He gestured to the wall of trees enclosing the glade. A legion of tiny eyes appeared from the dark. Gleams of metal objects at knee-height reflecting in the sunlight caught your eye.

A tiny figure leapt up onto the counter, wielding what looked to be a sowing needle. He made an almost inaudible growl at
Dog Food and brandished his weapon.

The cloaked figure spoke once again:
"If you have no further remarks to be made at this time, I suggest you each individually prepare to meet your maker."

This store doesn't really seem very customer friendly to me. Now, are we going to fight without any gear or are we going to run like hell?

That doesn't bode well, Master thinks to himself. There would be a time for regrets later, for now, Master shifted to a ready attack formation. While he may not have the arms he seeked, he felt somewhat confident. For he was not alone, and he believed in the strength of his comrades.
I hope not for battle, but we shall fight if we must!

OOC:

Since it is the weekend, I will wait, like last week, until Monday to post a round-up if before that time not everyone has responded yet.

However, in the meantime, have a look at the current state of the game. I did some drawing. :mryellow:

Image

This is the cloaked figure threatening you. And here's the glade you're currently in; you've had a while to take in your surroundings, so all of you have a pretty good idea of where all the potential enemies are (normally this would be different; but for this first fight, let's not get too in-depth about it - we'll save that for the next time ;) ). The path you just came from is in the bottom right-hand corner, while you can spot another path leading out of the glade at the top of the image.

Image

(Click the images to enlarge them.)
Since most of you did not describe your characters' appearances and I did not have internet at the time of drawing these to look up proper references, I came up with icons to represent you by heart. If you disagree with this portrayal, please do say.

Anyway, here are the characters:
Harpic..............Master...............Shrooblord........Dog Food........Chimney...........Udongo Mtu
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

The cloaked figure is in the centre of the glade, next to Shrooblord and Udongo Mtu. The stall is the structure in the bottom left-hand corner of the image stretching across three tiles, and the tiny figure brandishing its weapon is the tile placed on top of the centre of the stall, adjacent to Dog Food.

Since you're getting ready for combat, let me take this opportunity before it all begins to go down to explain some things about it.

It should be noted that combat works a little differently to the regular roleplaying. First of all, you don't post your actions explicitly in this topic, but rather describe to the Director through a PM what you wish to do with the two actions you have in your turn that round (please see the rules post on the first page). This PM may include things like what the character says or how they attempt to do things, of course, but because of the nature of combat and how fast-paced and focus-depriving situations of battle are, there will be less focus for all other members of the party on what exactly is done by all members individually, and more on the results of all characters' turns that round. (This also gives the saboteurs more of an avenue to mess around with the party a bit more easily without getting spotted out as quickly; combat is chaos and unless you're paying close attention to one particular party member, you may not notice all the subtleties that go down in a fight as well as you would in a conversation.)

Now, take a look at this image:

Image

Here is the layout of a fictional battlefield. First of all, each hexagonal space you see is one of the available spots you can stand in when in a map-bound situation. Spaces can be occupied by one character and one character alone. Each space is five feet removed from the next, so, for instance, a maximum movement speed of 15 feet/action translates to the ability to move three spaces in one action.

It is currently Master's turn, and he's deciding what he's going to do using the allotted two actions he can take in his turn. He is a character whose dexterity is quite high, so he's thinking about throwing a ranged basic attack (range 25 feet). The green targets in the picture indicate possible locations for his attack to land. The red target shows which unit is out of range for his attack. Naturally, he could also choose to attack one of his allies if he so wishes, but that would be a little counter-productive for his chances of survival.

There is also another option he could choose to go with, if he has the correct powers available to him to do so: he could send out an area of effect attack (with a radius of at least 10 feet) centred on Dog Food, which would hit two enemies for the price of only one attack, and not harm Dog Food in the process, since he is considered an ally to Master.

Furthermore, Chimney is not in the way of Master's attempt at a ranged basic attack towards the creature at the bottom of the image (again, because the obstructing character is considered an ally to him), while he does receive the benefit of having an ally in between him and his enemy, should that enemy decide to throw a ranged attack his way in return. As you can tell from these brief hints at combat tactics, positioning can be the key between winning a fight or having a close encounter with the Angel of Death.

Finally, he could choose to use one of his two actions to move up to his maximum movement speed (15 feet/action) towards a foe, and then attack using a melee basic attack, which goes off of a character's strength, instead of a ranged basic attack, if he so wishes.

Having made up his mind, he PMs the Director with the following information:
Example Master wrote:I would like to use my two actions to throw two ranged basic attacks at the two enemies next to Dog Food.
However, one of the enemies next to Dog Food happens to have an ability that, whenever it is targeted, it raises a shield to increase its defences.

Having done that, the Director rolls for the attacks. One hits and the other does not (most likely because of the shield, but it's up to the Director whether or not information about this is disclosed to the players). They note down how much damage the enemies take (which is, incidentally, based on the same skill that was used to throw the attack) and post the results of that round to the topic (this is after all the other players have made their turns known to the Director, too, and the enemies have taken their turns, of course).

And with that, a round has ended and a new one can begin. The board state will probably have changed around a bit, including characters having moved, died, obstacles being put into place or removed, other such events that change on a round-by-round basis. Anyway, players may then PM their requested actions to the Director once more, for the following round.

So, in short:
  • Combat moves in strict, well-defined rounds. A minimum time limit is in effect for combat rounds; you have at least a day to post your actions for your turn in combat, after which the Director may post an update at any time - so to be sure your wishes for your turn that round are adhered to, please post within a day of the "round summary" post from your Director appearing in the thread.
  • Turns consist of two actions and one reaction; please see the rules post on page 1.
  • You can choose to attack enemies in range, or get in range to attack.
  • Instead of posting here within the time limit, you should PM the Director what you want to do with your turn.
  • After all PMs have been received and enemy movements plotted out, the Director will update you on what actually happened that round*).
  • A new round begins; rinse and repeat.
*)= Or rather, all the things that everyone knows happened - some people might be informed individually based on certain factors secrets about other players based on what those others did or tried to do and how well they've managed to conceal that.

---

And that's about it!

I know that's a lot to take in; I wanted to be sure to get it out of the way before the combat actually began, so you could all get used to the idea of it all and ask questions beforehand.

Hehe, I like my icon
So does everyone PM you their action in secret, and you only announce the result once everyone has had a turn? Couldn't this cause conflicts such as everyone attacking the same enemy resulting in it being dead while other people are about to attack it? Or do we discuss what we'll do in this thread/via PM with teammates before hand? And would that be IC or OOC (since I would think there wouldn't be much time to talk mid-battle IC)?

OOC:
Both. You may discuss what to do in either OOC or IC (if IC makes sense, because, like you said, in most situations, it wouldn't - but then again, sometimes it may - a quick shout over the battlefield, some whispering to the guy next to you before attacking; that kind of thing). The turn progresses once everyone has sent me their desired actions in their turn that round.

Then I will resolve all the rolls and the resulting damage/effects.

Afterwards, all the enemies will have their go. Then it's you guys's turn again. ;)

So combat moves in waves and you know you can expect to all have a chance to do stuff, then the enemies will get their turn, then you guys again. There may be more intricacies such as opportunity attacks.
[Opportunity Attack]
Triggered attack power - melee. Trigger: something you consider an enemy moves through a space adjacent to you (within 5 feet). You make a basic attack against the triggering target.
[Note:] While under the effect of certain crowd-control status effects such as stunned, you cannot make opportunity attacks.
All characters have this ability, also enemies. Note that triggered abilities like these can "interrupt" the normal flow of combat: if, in your guys's turns, one of you triggers an enemy's opportunity attack, that enemy gets to act upon that before the enemies take their actual turns (and vice versa for you, of course). In effect, all characters have three actions in a round: two actions in their own turn, and one "reaction" that can only be used when triggered, just before the start of their turn.
Do note that if an enemy triggers two of your "reactionary" abilities, or two enemies trigger one of your "reactionary" abilities, you can only choose to use one of them; you have one "reaction" per round - use it wisely!

OOC: Not to backseat, just making a suggestion. Perhaps highlighting the counters for our characters and enemies with some sort of colour code might make it easier to determine where we are in the playing field.

Right, let's do this, I'll send a PM for my first action.

Yes. That's a good idea.

In fact, I meant to label the enemies with letters, too. I'll remember to do that after the first turn so you guys have a clearer way of saying "I'm attacking... that guy. Over there. By the bushes. To the left. More to the left. No, not that far. Yeah, him." :P

is in direct discordance with the idea of keeping this thread a light-hearted, fun affair without many strings attached; it puts pressure on everyone to be on time to participate, and I've noticed that my life, and therefore my availability of being here each and every day at the same time, doesn't really allow that to work out completely in such a manner. Futhermore, I've noticed that the same seems to be true for most other participants in the RPG.

So I've decided to change

Just note that the possibility exists that your actions will not be accounted for if you post after the minimum time limit has expired (although probably, they will be - so don't worry too much).
And, as always, if everyone has responded and I have the time to create an update before the minimum time has passed, of course, that update will get made. ;)

IC:
Day 1. Dark Forest, Market Glade
Some in the party took that threat as an invitation. While Harpic, Shrooblord and Chimney were still preparing for the imminent fight, Dog Food started blasting the creature next to him using what seemed like pellets of crunchy, delicious, nutritious chicken kibble (grain-free of course). Master, meanwhile, moved in for the kill and shot a bolt of energy from his staff towards the creature.

The tiny creature completely and wholly splattered under the assault, its weapons and armour flying each and every direction. You thought you saw its eyes bounce down on the ground and blink once in surprise before flying off into the dark forest.

At the same time,
Udongo Mtu stepped in closer towards the cloaked figure, appearing determined, while the flower perched upon his shoulder stood erect and faced the cloaked figure.

Momentarily taken aback by the sudden burst of energy and ferocity coming out of these brave fighters, whose spirit he had expected to crumble instantly under his threat, the brim-hatted one spoke:
"Then we will show you no mercy. Come, boys! End them where they stand!"
He raised both his hands towards the exits.
"And don't think about trying to get away."
Two wisps of blue flame shot up in the pathways that led into the glade. Trapped!

Meanwhile, from the bushes rushed three tiny creatures identical in appearance to the one that had been standing on the market stall, swarming around
Udongo Mtu. One of them appeared to grow its mouth to extraordinary sizes while it tried to take a bite out of Udongo Mtu's shins.
But... it missed! Grinding its teeth horribly against each other, it chomped down on a small rock next to
Udongo Mtu's feet instead.
Hearing movement in the bushes,
Udongo Mtu caught the sun reflecting off a tiny dart coming from the foresty wall on the right, but only too late: the dart implanted itself firmly in his waxy, moist, tender skin.

From under the cloaked figure's robes, a wisp of purple energy seemed to seep into his form. His eyes flared up and set ablaze, his resolve appearing bolstered. His fists clenched, his stare intensified. He gazed upon
Udongo Mtu and laughed a mocking laugh.

Though
Master moved straight past an enemy waiting in the bushes, he didn't seem to get hit by anything while he made his way over towards the market stall. He did catch a glimpse of what looked like a tiny metal dart whizzing by him as he passed the creature, but it seemed to have been aimed skywards rather than at him. Another dart sang through the air, but it, too, failed to find its mark.
However, standing where he now stood, he saw the shimmer of a tiny blade stabbing at him from the dark recesses of the foresty wall. But it almost looked like the weapon just couldn't reach far enough to harm him. So as
Master thought to have thwarted his foe, he laughed, losing focus for just a moment. Then he felt the singe of another stab of the needle pierce his skin.

Finally,
Harpic heard a dart pierce the air by his ear, but fortunately did not feel its sting.

And with that, a fierce battle did seem to have begun.
The current state of the battlefield is as follows:
Image

Starting from now, the combat rules are in effect: please remember to send your actions for the turn within a day (so before 23:15 GMT+1 tomorrow), or you'll run the risk of doing nothing the next turn.

PS
As you can see, all party members' current health is visible at all times, but that of the enemy is completely unknown to you. Use this knowledge to make tactical decisions on how to help out your fellow party members; and try to read the subtext in my descriptions in order to figure out how well an enemy is doing - you could figure out who has wobbly knees from fatigue and take them out while they're low!

Well, we don't know how much health they have, so maybe one attacker (1 person performing 2 attacks) could do the trick as well. And if that's the case, we can defeat 2 enemies in one turn.
On the other hand, if that's not the case, we'll take damage from 2 enemies instead of one.

...

I guess it's best to play safe and both attack Creature D, to make sure it gets defeated(?)

I've attacked both, it's a fair point that we might end up having two creatures left, but alternatively, we could waste an attack. Best case, we defeat one and damage the other. Worst case, both are still alive but visible and damaged.

Given how they're a sort of swarm like enemy, I'd imagine they're not too big on the hp front. It's a bit of a risk, but it could pay off well.

OOC: You observe quickly. ;)

IC:
Day 1. Dark Forest, Market Glade
With unwavering courage, Master struck the creature that had so viciously attacked him from the unseen undergrowth. And he struck hard. A not-quite-so-inaudible-this-time yelp came from the depths of the darkness before the wizard. Consequently, he stared hard at the space ten feet to the left of his foe, where the arrows had emerged. With a twinkle in his eye, he waved his staff in the air, but clumsily - he almost dropped his staff! But purple fire sprouted from its motion and arced into the brush. Briefly, the blackness was illuminated. And for that slight instant, it became clear what he had singed: a creature very alike the others that were swarming around Udongo Mtu, but wielding a bow with needles for arrows. The creature set alight, and it was obvious to the young wizard that it suffered a grievous blow from the fire, that kept burning and did not falter in strength.

Udongo Mtu remained unphased by the light sting to his side, after all he's had much worse done to him by would-be brick makers when he was bathing in the Ballhom River one day. Instead, he spun around, looked the hidden assaulter by Master's feet straight in where he thought the eye was with a menacing glare, saying "You there! Yes you, swinging your needle around carelessly! Look at my face. That's right, this is the face of a killer and you know it. If you want your pathetic life to last any longer than two seconds, you had better make sure you stay on our good side!"
A half confused grunt came from the dark, as if the creature had trouble deciding what to do. You thought you momentarily saw its weapon waver.

A huge volley of nutritious and deadly kibble passed
Master's ear as Dog Food hurled an attack towards the creature that had stabbed Master. One half of the volley went completely astray and almost hit Udongo Mtu instead! But the other hit its mark and a short but fierce yelp emerged from the underbrush yet again. A needle clanged on the floor at Master's feet and a pair of eyeballs flew past him.

Then,
Udongo Mtu turned back to the hooded figure with an intimate smile on his face. He and the flower on his shoulder started to dance seductively in front of him, continually drawing attention to Udongo's gorgeous face. His mouth appeared to move slowly, as if chanting something.

The eyes under the cloaked figure's brim hat seemed to dim. They flickered. Fixated on
Udongo Mtu, the top half of the creature started to fall forwards towards him. His torso fell flat on the ground and the cloak rolled up around the brim hat as it rolled forwards towards Udongo Mtu. The final part of the cloak lifted from the ground where the creature had been standing before and revealed underneath a creature that was very much confused, surprised and distressed about this turn of events.

The brim hat scuffled about on the floor until it lifted itself from the tangle it had rolled itself into. The two specs of light for eyes stared up again, completely fixated on
Udongo Mtu.

Its wits regathered, the little green creature that had been revealed to have been hiding under the cloak waved with its hands through the air and two wisps of purple energy danced around them as they moved. Pushing its hands forwards, the creature sent the purple wisps towards the two needle-wielders A and B surrounding
Udongo Mtu. The energy got absorbed into their skin and you saw them tremble and falter, before screaming the most ferocious of screams, their eyes kindled with something fearsome.

From the furthest wall of the forest, one creature came running in, wielding a bow and seemingly in a hurry. It strung a noisome looking dart on its weapon and fired at
Udongo Mtu. Direct hit! A whiff of green, deathly smoke eminates from the puncture wound as the dart plants itself firmly in the clay man's form.

The brushes next to
Chimney and Harpic rattle and whisper, betraying the little footsteps of a creature moving through. A tiny dart whistles through the air towards Udongo Mtu and strikes him in the left shoulder!

With fire in its eyes, the needle bearing creature A extends its jaw to uncanny proportions and chomps down on
Udongo Mtu's shins! At least... it tried to. Instead, it chomped down on its own weapon. D'oh!
That tiny blade now dripping wet with vile saliva, the creature then continued to take a stab in
Udongo Mtu's direction. Weakened from the ghastly dart, he was only just unable to deflect the incoming strike and took a needle to the knee!

Creature B, inspired by its neighbour's actions and furious with a madness that came from beyond its own body, it, too, attempted to bite
Udongo Mtu. But, it bit into its shoe instead. Trying to stab at the clay man proved very difficult while limping, so its next attack missed also.

The last assaulter took two swipes with its needle at the clay man who was so attractive to both life and steel. The first one was aimed at
Shrooblord, though, and seeing how the knight was 10 feet away, it could have never found its mark. And with the second attempt, the creature stabbed itself in the eye. Maybe it should take some sword fighting lessons.

Master caught a green glimmer coming from the bushes 10 feet away from him, where he had struck the small archer with his attack. Two vile darts oozing with a ghastly green mist soared through the air, both hitting him square in the chest. A skull made of green smoke puffed out of Master's wounds.
The battlefield now looks as follows:
