I've been meaning to play Cave Story for ages, I've picked it up multiple times and for some reason forgotten about it soon after. I recently got it on my PSP as (an excellently made) homebrew which incentivised me to play it to completion, as I find it much easier to forget about console/PC titles possibly due to the inconvenience of booting it up.

So I just completed it and it was bloody good, the final boss was especially fun. It was slightly shorter than I'd imagined it would be but then again I've only just remembered that it has multiple endings and player choices, so I'll be giving it another playthrough eventually.

Now on to Castlevania SotN, then Majoras Mask, Phoenix Wright, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, LoZ Wind Waker and finally Monkey Island to finish off the (relatively) recent list of games I've started and never finished!

Been playing a new multiplayer game on Steam called "PLAYERUNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS" (really dumb name) It's a "Battle Royale" derived game set on an expansive island, where you're pitted against 99 or so other players. It's very addicting, well designed and extremely intense. Was playing with some Irish guy in the duo mode, and it was awesome coming up with tactics and whatnot.

I just got my hands on GTA V a few days ago as it was on offer. I never thought it would really be my kind of game but it's much more sandboxy than I expected with a bunch of mini-gamemodes, and playing online with friends has been the most fun I've had in a while :)

Been playing a combination of sport games. From baseball, to golf, to bowling. Although I've been playing the baseball one the most out of the three. After playing a bit more of those I'll play some of the original Rayman then switch to the PC to play The Sims 3 since I got a lot more free time on my hands now.

I've been playing lots of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild lately. I'm definitely looking forward to leaving my thoughts/mini-review on this one. 101 shrines in, I'd like to do all 120 and get some of the hidden armor before taking on Ganon.

Been playing Vanquish on Steam lately, and maaan this game is still so good. The mechanics are heaps of fun to mess about with: the shooting feels finely tuned allowing for pin-point accuracy and sliding about at break-neck speeds never gets old.

Thinking about checking out Nier: Automata after this one, as Platinum have been impressing me a lot lately.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild

I actually finished this one a few weeks ago, but I feel like I should leave a small semi-review on my thoughts for this game. From the first trailer, Breath of The Wild was easily one of my most anticipated games of this year. I remember watching a good 2 hours or so of the Nintendo's treehouse gameplay from E3 2016 being almost overwhelmed by the game's incredible variety and how 'open' everything looked. This is a big point that I wanted to address for Breath of The Wild, it is perhaps one of the most ambitious Zelda games to date by taking the risk of removing series staples for the sake of redefining the Zelda formula to create a more streamlined experience. Breath of The Wild I do believe certainly sets new standards for the future of Zelda.

One thing I really wanted to note was the games aesthetic, I believe its crafted in a way that will make the game age well through the years, which I do believe Twilight Princess's attempt at realism has suffered from through the years. It looks a tad Windwaker-y but you have the traditional Link rather than the chibified Toon Link, and the cell-shaded environments are toned down in comparison. Hyrule this time around is massive, and is now one giant seamless world rather than having separate areas that need to load out. Although you will stumble upon giant open areas of nothingness at times, it makes sense in context.

One of my favorite aspects of Breath Of The Wild: the story unfolds as you progress. You aren't told from the beginning what happens, but you're given the basic rundown once completing the first four tutorial shrines, but that's barely scraping the surface of it. Hyrule is now in a post apocalyptic state after being destroyed by Calamity Ganon, part of your (optional) objective is to uncover the events that lead towards that very moment. Cutscenes were kept very short, but enough to get straight to the point. Like every Zelda game you have the simple premise of defeating Ganon and saving Hyrule, but learning of the events that unfolded is an extra bonus on top of that. On top of this Breath of The Wild has a lot of personality. You have the "four champions" of Hyrule who were defeated by Calamity Ganon 100 years ago who all have their own unique personalities to them, all with their own full fledged voice acting, including Zelda herself. Voice acting was a step in the right direction. I understand for years Nintendo avoided voice acting for Zelda, possibly to keep that mystery to the characters and leave the player to their interpretation, but sacrificing that series staple was a necessity at this point, and the voice actors did a great job at conveying their characters and giving them their established personalities. Even Zelda herself feels a lot more fleshed out, being someone who is having a difficult time having to uphold her royal legacy (similar to that of Noctis from Final Fantasy XV.)

What's really interesting to me is just how 'open' Breath Of The Wild really is. You have your typical open world games: go from point A, to point B marked on your map. Breath of The Wild from the get go, gives you the freedom to do almost anything you want, even if that means taking on the final boss directly after the tutorial. Unlike majority of Zelda's where you progress to add more tools to your arsenal to solve new puzzles, Breath of The Wild gives you every single tool during the tutorial, meaning there is no unnecessary backtracking, and every puzzle can be solved upon first visit. Not only this, but Breath of The Wild encourages exploration, you are often rewarded for taking a detour from your main objective to investigate a certain area. While I wouldn't necessarily say Breath of The Wild does anything new or innovative for the open world genre, it certainly does things right as opposed to majority of open world games. While most open world games really try to hold your hand in regards to where to go, Breath of The Wild hardly does this, in fact, the beginning moments of the game will certainly be some of the most difficult, as the world is dangerous and you'll have a lot of 1-hit kill enemies early on. This is where exploration is heavily encouraged, as completing the games optional shrines will reward you with spirit orbs that can be exchanged for heart pieces or stamina vessels. It is very likely you will bump into some enemies much stronger than you. Shrines are another important aspect of the game and probably one of Breath of The Wild's most unique features. These shrines are scattered through out Hyrule, often being essentially mini dungeons based on one 'gimmick.' While a lot of these shrines had really interesting and unique puzzles, a lot of the shrines are simply filler. The game hardly had many actual 'puzzle' shrines with the majority of shrines just being a 'blessing' shrine, or an 'arena' shrine. The blessing shrines simply consist of a straight line with the goal straight ahead but are usually preceded by a puzzle before it, while as an arena shrine pits you up against one of the guardians. These sort of come off as filler, and the game is scattered with way too many of them, but that's just a small nitpick. Breath of The Wild contains four massive dungeons in the form of divine beasts, ancient beings that were taken over by Calamity Ganon, where Link needs to restore the spirit that rests inside. After completing the game I noticed the intended order of these divine beasts was done in a very strange order, in a way that wasn't exactly done by most people, but that's part of the incredible open world aspect of Breath of The Wild, the freedom to do whatever you want in any order you want.

Gameplay is adjusted from previous titles to coincide with the games more open nature. The stamina bar from skyward sword returns and is more important than ever for traversing. You can climb just about everything, and the bigger your stamina bar, the easier that is to do. I'd honestly even argue that raising your stamina in the beginning stages is more important than raising your hearts, but again, that is a decision that is up to the player. Combat is emphasized greatly in this game. The variety of weapons in Breath of The Wild is massive- you can use just about anything as a weapon. Although with this comes one of the biggest criticisms Breath of The Wild has got: weapon durability. Weapons do not last forever, and it doesn't take too long for them to break either. Understandably a lot of people have took issue with this, and I use to be included in that. However, after playing through 100 hours, I can hardly say this is a problem. While it is true weapons are incredibly disposable, there's always a nearby one that will get the job done, and it forces you to experiment which I don't necessarily consider a bad thing, and it also emphasizes the fact that you can't be careless in this game, especially during the early stages. A lot of situations need to be planned out, and there are many ways to go about fighting enemies, you can even take a stealthy approach. Having all these options just for combat is what really Breath Of The Wild stand out from other titles- it is easily the most intricate and versatile combat system in any Zelda title yet.

It's definitely not hard to call Breath of The Wild one of the best titles of this year by far. Although, I do have a difficult time giving the game a perfect 10 for few small criticisms. There are many areas in the game that do feel more empty than they need to be, and I feel like the snow areas of the game sometimes took up way too much of the map than needed. And the game was created to be practically impossible to actually 100 percent, with there being 900 korok seeds that will require some serious dedication. Not to mention, very little enemy variety, which is surprising for one of the biggest Zelda games yet. You'll often find a lot of recolored enemies. I don't often mind recycled/recolored enemies but it was definitely way more than needed here. Also the main "dungeons" are incredibly small- and presentation has certainly taken a backseat in that regard. While I believe straying from what majority of the 3d Zelda titles to do something brand new is perfectly fine, the one thing I miss the most was the presentation and the giant dungeons. These divine beasts did have some interesting puzzles to them, but they come nowhere close to the dungeons from previous titles. Sometimes a bit of the colors and areas felt just a little washed out though I believe these issues may be mostly due to console restrictions seeing as how they wanted to optimize the game for the Wii U, making it so the game couldn't really maximize its potential benefits for Switch.

Those minor issues aside, I can easily say Breath of The Wild has been my second favorite title of this year (being right behind Persona 5.) The amount of detail poured into every nook and cranny of this game really feels like there were no shortcuts. I really hope to see future Zelda titles take what Breath of The Wild did but also try to combine the elements of previous 3d titles to create something really grand. It's a new direction for the series that I hope is here to stay.

I finished Castlevania Symphony of the Night a little while ago but forgot to write anything about it.
I went in with high expectations (and I can't say I was disappointed), but it did have its flaws.
One thing is the lack of any kind of tutorial or moves list. I'm not a fan of tutorials, but I would have at least appreciated some list of the moves and special combos I can use, in fact I think this could have been integrated into the shopkeeper's stand considering he also teaches you tactics on fighting bosses and you can buy spells from him. A lot of these things I did figure out myself by accidentally stumbling upon them, such as the wolf run attack and some special powered up attacks with certain swords when you push a button combo, but I went the whole way through the game without realising you could dash quickly with the bat by executing a pretty complex combo that isn't explained anywhere in the game, which would have made the back tracking a lot more tolerable.
Overall though the game had a brilliant atmosphere with different parts of the castle sticking to a unique aesthetic with great music, and the game just looks really good with excellent sprite work and merging of 3D and 2D perfectly. The gameplay is fun and the levels feel really well designed in that at no point did I feel I was having my hand held yet I rarely got stuck, as you usually always have a goal or a new thing to explore. A lot of the items seemed kind of useless in that I only used about 3 or 4 different swords during the whole game, but the exploration still always felt rewarding.
So, now on to Phoenix Wright!

As of now in my recent gaming binge during the summer I've been playing Digital Devil Saga. I'm close to finishing this and reaching the second title though I don't plan to leave a review until I beat the second title since the series is meant to be a duology. Though I'm loving the themes so far, the whole concept of characters gradually awakening to their emotions and having their own individualism, being forced to devour their fellow man. Some pretty deep and interesting themes in here. Though I'm a little indifferent about the gameplay so far.

I just finished playing the entire collection of Kingdom Hearts games on PS4. Even platinumed KH2 along the way. I still think KH1 and KH2 are fantastic games and Re:CoM, BBS and DDD are pretty bad. Kinda sad that the team that made the three latter games is making KH3...
I also just got Nier Automata, but I don't know if I'll want to play another actiony game so soon after all those KH games.

Lately I often find myself reminiscing about Suikoden II, what a great game that was. It may have become my favourite game of all time, on the same level or better than FF9 and Chrono Trigger. A while ago I played two short fan-translated Suikoden sidestories (in visual novel format), but even those were so good that my desire to play more Suikoden has only increased. Guess the only logical conclusion is to play the third game, but I don't know if I want to do so on my half-broken PS2...
SIgh. I'll just watch this gorgeous pixel art again while I think of a better solution.

Drol, you know I always appreciate your great taste in RPGs my dude! (Games mostly in my backlog that I still need to get around to playing.)
I actually recently passed by the Kingdom Hearts Ps4 collection at a store, and I have to admit, the 60 fps really is a huge aspect to me wanting it. I'll likely get it someday, but I think I have little too many RPGs in my backlog (A goal of mine is to play all the mainline FF games up to 9, including few spin offs.) Also in regards to your Suikoden situation you do have plenty of options you just need the cash for it of course- either you could emulate (which is free) or buy a new PS2.
Though I've been continuing my SMT RPG spree lately, and I'm very close to finishing Digital Devil Saga, these optional bosses are pretty distracting though.

Come on, KH: BBS is not that bad. :(

I finished Tales from the Borderlands yesterday, it was great and story driven. Now it's time to start playing Prey.
I would also consider playing Nier Automata, given the acclamation the game received.

I see a lot of people straight out skipping Nier that just to go straight to Automata so I take is the original Nier is not required to know?

Well, from what I've seen there are references and a few characters you'll recognize if you've played the first, but it's set like centuries after the first, so it isn't required, no. I would recommend playing it though, it's a good game with a fantastic soundtrack (better than Automata's).
LoveMetal wrote:Come on, KH: BBS is not that bad. :(
It's good enough in terms of worlds and story (could do with better voice acting though), but its gameplay is really flawed. Some of your attacks miss a lot of the time or take very long to execute, bosses will randomly break out of your combos, etc. Too many small annoyances that makes it so enemies can randomly kill you, especially on higher difficulty levels (which lack proper balancing, unlike KH1 and 2). So yeah, I don't think it's a good game, but not terrible either.

Nice goal you have there - prepare for a lot of frustration by not being able to save for long stretches of time in FF2 and FF3 though :P
You mentioning spin-offs reminded me that I still need to play FF Tactics. People keep saying that's one of the best FFs. Maybe I'll give it a try next. Suikoden 3 has some slowdowns on my laptop, so I guess I won't be playing that game for a while...

I'm paying Star Tropics at the moment. It's a wonderful little RPG/adventure game on the NES, inspired by the first Zelda but with a more modern and American setting with references to American culture (one of the main islands the game is set on is called "Americola", and every island has "cola" at the end...). Apparently this was made to be more relatable for American audiences than games like Zelda with more Japanese influence, but it doesn't feel forced or ruin the game in any way; the humour and the atmosphere is kind of charming and it really is a fun little game, I'd say in many ways an improvement on the original Zelda in fact. It was even included on the NES mini if I remember correctly, which I suppose is at least some sort of testament to its quality.
