< is already ahead of you there, at least on the new ones.
< was told to wait for Amazon's Investigation Team before doing anything else at this time, but < did go ahead and order drives from NewEgg. (No 3rd Party.)
So instead of 8 x 2TB drives, with two intended to be spares. < settled for 6 x 6TB drives, no spares. Knock on wood, but the same HGST drives < bought from NewEgg like this, all worked perfectly. They were 6 x 5TB for <'s home storage server.
Basically < already
knows what new drives
truly look like. Retail boxed version, obviously come boxed with accessories like some screws and warranty from HGST themselves. OEM version, would come in the
same anti-static sealed back as the retail drives which will
have a label on the bag showing the part number, serial number, size of drive, and everything.
The fishy drives were in a ULINE bag, which anyone can buy and use to reseal products. Sure, < could say
"Yeah, okay so I can understand maybe they were pulled from new Lenovo servers" or
"They may have had some burn in test.", but the issue is the fact on how much they varied along with the incorrect S/N being reported. This information can be checked
super easily under Microsoft Windows or Linux.
You simply need CrystalDiskInfo on Windows and for linux? A simple command which < is sure Plum knows by heart.
smartctl -a /dev/[DISK NAME HERE]
Of course you'll need to know your disk name to check it, which it
does depend on how many drives you have
and if it's an NVMe or not. "
fdisk -l" is your friend.
