There's a default bet amount for each round but you can explicitly specify a higher number if you like.
I'm not sure what you need to understand it besides those two simple sentences in the first post.

Well from what I understand the winner of each round gets the total tings bet by everyone that round, but if that's the case what's the point in betting more than the default? From last year it looks like your own bet is deducted from your total score, so you're just adding to everyone else's potential prize but not your own

It's completely useless yeah, unless you want to spice it up for others. It's a dumb game after all.
