I guess Kids age 7-10. This was the 90's; games could be hard af and still have a unique style.
P.S. I think that the game's style was a mix of childhood memories & Disney.

I was about 8 when I first played Rayman so I guess that was about right. A lot of those games were just hard, like even Streets Of Rage for example was never the easiest game on 1 player and took some practice to get the hang of.

It was aimed at kids, but I don't think the devs realized just how brutal it was, especially with having to get all the cages. IIRC, the likes of Serge Hascoët make confessions to that effect in L'Histoire de Rayman…

Yeah, that's why they made the second game much easier and more forgiving. Not to say it's bad though, it's my favorite game from the series after all!

I'm sure it's been noted in this thread before, but can we just appreciate the incredible music in Rayman 1? First Steps is such a whimsical, yet welcoming little song that it really immerses you and sets you out for adventure in the lush, colourful environment of The Dream Forest. Meanwhile, Harmony really captures the scale and musical wonder of Band Land.

Well, One of the composer of Rayman 1 actually make a music project of Rayman 1, you can see this on the topic he made : viewtopic.php?t=12425

I was aware of this project, yeah! It's such a shame the kickstarter for it failed (Lord knows I'd do anything for a Rayman soundtrack on vinyl), but I know that Remi is still continuing the project regardless.

A lot of stuff is incredible about Rayman 1. The graphics for the time and hardware it was on are amazing, how creative the worlds are, the music etc. I always loved playing it as a kid and never paid attention to it's difficulty back then either. I still feel like it seemed ahead of it's time and yet Sony were all like "2D is yesterdays news, we want to push the limits of 3D gaming now" when they first seen it. I think it sold like 4 million copies on PS1.

And look how well that worked out for Sony with this particular series. :bad:

It's probably my favourite PS1 game ever! It's a tough one between that and Crash Bandicoot :hap:

I never played the first Rayman until two weeks ago. The Game Boy Advance version feels fun to play on the go. I thought I need more games on the GBA anyway due to only having one game. But then I would be going off topic. I love Rayman.

It's ok to talk about other games, so long as the bulk of the conversation remains about Rayman 1, the mods don't seem to mind. I prefer the PS1 version because not only was that a childhood gem to me, but it had the best soundtrack too out of all Rayman one releases. The game is seriously so ahead of it's time and so much fun to play. It might be fairly difficult to a new player but I like the difficulty level personally.

I remember when I get the Gba version as a birthday gift and i litterally jumped the second the music started playing the first time, I wasn't expecting that high pitchness. I also prefere the PS1 version but there is one particular thing about the Gba version I liked, if I can find it i'l share it on here via a screenshot.

I own the GBA version of the game too but I have yet to get into playing it. I should just play it anyway because I have a GBA and the game literally sitting right in front of me, I just feel like I prefer the PS1 version since I have it along with the PC, Saturn and Jaguar versions

I also have to play the Vita version of Origins and again I feel like I prefer playing the others over it though it's not bad. The 3DS version is by far the worst version of that game.

Oh yeah. I guess that is pretty cool tbh :)

I wanted to complete each version so I guess there's still the Saturn version to finish, the PC version to play and the GBA version. I'm not so sure the DSi version matters too much

The Dsi version is probally the best portable version of Rayman 1. While there is Rayman Classic, Rayman classic messes up the sound when you charge up Rayman's fist and you have to buy a seperate gamepad if you don't want to play with the touch screen but regardless of these issues it is still a good runner up to the Dsi release, nearly a tie since both are bassed off the pc version, the Dsi version is just the better version even if just slightly better.

What's Rayman like on the Jaguar? I don't have the Jaguar, I just want to know.

I guess I should try the DSi version when I can in that case.

The Jaguar version is the original release. The music is also like MIDI though not as squeaky/scratchy as the GBA version. The physics of Rayman are very different and a lot of the levels have small changes. Eraser plains has a completely different part 3 which is nothing like what's seen in the others and Candy Chateau is also different. The game also lacks sliding physics meaning that Allegro Presto had a lot of changes such as spamming the level with hunters. There are other differences in places a little more minor but the entire game just feels different to me.
