Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Well it already runs quite slow on emulator but I heard that it runs slow on real hardware too unless I am wrong.
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
The PAL version runs on 50hz which is already a bit slower than the NTSC 60, and there can be some frame drops here and there. But otherwise I don't think it runs that slow, I think it actually runs pretty smooth most of the time on the console.
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
It runs at a very low fps on real hardware too if that's what you mean. 30fps with drops for NTSC and 25fps with drops for PAL, but aside from the frames shown, the gameplay is the same speed on both. The PC and Dreamcast versions run at 60fps, running the Dreamcast version at 50fps results in slower gameplay just like the PAL PS1 or N64 versions.

Oh, I thought the fps-es were higher than that.Steo wrote: Tue Jan 22, 2019 7:04 am It runs at a very low fps on real hardware too if that's what you mean. 30fps with drops for NTSC and 25fps with drops for PAL, but aside from the frames shown, the gameplay is the same speed on both. The game itself runs at 50Hz 576i (PAL) or 60Hz 480i (NTSC), but the game itself is only running at half of those refresh rates like a lot of other console titles do, hence the 25fps or 30fps target framerates. Rayman 3 is actually 60fps (with the possibility of 50fps in PAL regions too) and you'll notice it feels more fluid than Revolution in comparison.
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Yeah, probably because the version of the RenderWare they were using were old/outdated since both Burnout 2 and 3 for example use RenderWare but they run more smoothly as well.Steo wrote: Tue Jan 22, 2019 7:16 am The game itself runs at 50Hz 576i (PAL) or 60Hz 480i (NTSC), but the game itself is only running at half of those refresh rates like a lot of other console titles do, hence the 25fps or 30fps target framerates. I wouldn't mind the 25/30fps caps if there wasn't a lot of drops to what look like about 15fps, but there's also the glitches present which kept hindering my progress. Nevertheless, it's still a good game, but I feel like it had a lot more potential to it.

I'm suprised it runs slow on real hardware too. So that means my PC can actually handle PS2 games, it's just the emulator is emulating the slowness on Rayman 2 Revolution. I will have to run other Rayman games on it and see if it runs at full speed.
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
There's a 60fps patch here but you need a very powerful system to run it.

Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Whilst searching the web I found video gameplay of the Fairy Glade and it was running at full speed.
He was not playing the game in an emulator, in the comments he said he was playing on a real PS2. The game was running so smoothly instead of FPS drops happening frequently. I don't know how he did this unless someone can explain it for me.

That video is the same as how my PS2 runs the game yeah, but it's not keeping a steady framerate and has a stutter-like effect. You must be talking about actual emulator slowdown if yours is worse than that, which means that unfortunately, your computers CPU and/or GPU are not up to the task of emulating it at full speed.
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
I've only played Revolution on PCSX2, and my experience has been that it mostly runs at good speed (even if not always at full framerate), and slowdowns are present in specific areas.

Same, I've only ever played Revolution on PCSX2. The one area I remember where I always had a definite slow down was at the bridge in Minisaurus Plains. I wish my laptop was strong enough for that patch posted above to work, bad sadly that's not the case with either of my laptops.

I would be curious to hear your findings, as aside from Revolution, I haven't yet tested Rayman M/Arena or R3 yet on an emulator (or Retroarch yet for that matterShadowrayman wrote: Tue Jan 22, 2019 10:58 pm I'm suprised it runs slow on real hardware too. Trust me, I've played it on a real PS2 and it slows down everywhere! Maybe not enough in certain places for most people to notice, but it definitely does lose frames almost constantly. In some areas it's so bad that even people that aren't susceptible to frame drops can notice it.

That's the same thing that happens to me when I played it in PCSX2! I always lag in the Minisaurus Plains and the start of the Fairy Glade. I don't seem to lag at all in The Marshes of Awakening oddly. The Jonster wrote: Fri Jan 25, 2019 3:51 pm Same, I've only ever played Revolution on PCSX2. I hope it runs at full speed, if not it means my PC isn't powerful enough to run PS2 games, we should also post our PC specs here to see if our computers are weak or slow. The Jonster wrote: Fri Jan 25, 2019 3:51 pm I would be curious to hear your findings, as aside from Revolution, I haven't yet tested Rayman M/Arena or R3 yet on an emulator (or Retroarch yet for that matter)
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Well I'm pretty sure that Jonster has an i7-5500U and Intel HD Graphics 5500. I don't honestly think that GPU has enough power to run a PS2 emulator at full speed. The CPU should be fine, but the GPU is likely going to limit the performance somewhat.
When you guys say slowdown, do you mean just the framerate or do you also get choppy sound when it happens?

Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
We mean both choppy sound and bad framerate
Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Then yeah, it's definitely the emulator slowing down because the computer isn't powerful enough.

Re: Does Rayman 2 Revolution run slow on a real PS2?
Yeah, so that 7500U's GPU still falls short unfortunately. It's Intel® HD Graphics 620, so that likely explains the slowdowns you're encountering.
