Does anyone know how the art for Ray 1 was made?
I'm mostly talking about the backgrounds. Do you think it was painted and then digitized? Or that it was made digitally in high resolution and then downscaled to fit the game?
IIRC, Rayman got his name from the raytracing rendering technique. Maybe they used the raytraced images as a base and added details later.
But if there's any high resolution art hidden somewhere in Ubisoft's vault, I'd love to be able to see it one day...

They did indeed digitize drawings. I hope they kept the originals as they'd be a great reference for a potential remake.
Re: The Art of Rayman 1
I'd love to have more high quality Rayman 1 references on my PC for studying. Does anyone have some high res pics? I've already found some concept art, but it's all very low res.
I'm working on an animation project this year and I want to study the artstyle of Ray 1 for it.

Ryemanni showed a few ones on Twitter a while back, though I don't think he has that many of them. Not sure where they're from either.
