Looking around, I think everyone neefs a break rather than a new COTM. I have been busy doing organisation things too. So no impulse from me on this.

I already handed out the prizes, so unless we double up on it, there's no other option for now. :P

Re: Challenge of the Month #15 - The Walk of Life

Post by Steo »

Since Pirate-Community has recently opened up its new speedrunning sub-forum, this next challenge will be based on speedrunning.

The challenge will be to finish the Walk of Life from Rayman 2 as quickly as possible. The player must be playing either the PC or Dreamcast version in order to participate in this challenge.

The challenge begins now, and will continue until the end of February 28th (UTC). Good luck to anyone who participates, and have fun!

And in case you're wondering, there's no need to catch all the Lums (you probably have already :P).

Now I can see that the current world record stands at 1:53.71, I'm curious as to how close we'll get!

I'm guessing we should have video proof then, in which case, I either need to use OBS or else set up my capture card to use the Dreamcast, which is a lot more effort.

Yeah, we should require video proof, at least for the best times. I suppose it's fine to accept screenshots for those times that nobody would ever cheat to get.

Setting up to get video proof is gonna be a challenge for me too. Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

OBS seems to to work for me on LFS, I had a version compiled in my home folder.

Well if I'm to film it, I'll probably just do it with my phone.

Haha. Also, it would have been complicated if the game was Revolution since there's supposed to be some glitch where you walk faster diagonally.

Walk faster diagonally eh? Sounds like numerical dispersion in Finite-Difference Time Domain optical simulations!

Sorry, that was particularly obscure and geeky :oops2:

Maybe people aren't very interested in these Ly racing challenges. :fou:

I'll still try get an entry in for the sake of it when I'm not doing anything.

Shoot, I keep forgetting about this! :oops2: Let's see if I get to it this weekend!

EDIT: Here's my entry – nothing spectacular, but at least it's something:

Looks like I just did 01:42.70 on nullDC and beat my previous record on this emulator which stood at 01:42.76. :oops2:

No, I'm not going to record a video, and I understand that my entry won't count, but here it is.

I may have a better score in my PC saved game, but I'm not sure I have a copy of it anywhere but on my retro Win98 system, which is at my parents'...

Thanks for reminding me. :P Here's my submission:
The in-game timer shows 1'25"13, but in real time it's probably more as the timer isn't reliable whatsoever. Since I don't know what rules apply for this challenge I also measured the time for the entire level compliant with the rules on speedrun.com. It's 1:47.96.
Good luck to all contestants! :)

Yes, the in-game timer is all over the place. No idea how it actually counts.
