Detective Pikachu
Oh boy, this movie sucked. I really, really wanted to like it, but it wouldn't stop disappointing. The opening where they're stalking the cubone was okay, then it so quickly went downhill. Even for a "kid's movie" (not like there's an excuse for kids' movies doing this anyway) it was beyond cliché. There's just scene after scene claustrophobically squashed together with zero room to breathe or pacing to speak of (literally, within 15 minutes ), zero character development, zero originality, zero fun (yeah that's right).
I was so bored half way through I was just waiting for it to end. Normally I have a high tolerance for predictable tropes but I've never seen a movie so jam-packed with them from end-to-end. I like Ryan Reynolds (usually - I thought Deadpool 1 kinda sucked, 2 was funny), but the lines they wrote for him were painfully unfunny ( they even tossed in an explicit joke about climate change deniers that was so untactful it probably ended up working against itself). Like this is more bland and predictable than a 90's live action Disney movie I kid you not.
On a technical level it was genuinely really cool to see the CGI Pokémon in a real life setting, but the novelty wore off around the 20-30 minute mark in addition to them taking a noticeable dip in quality after the opening scene. The action scenes are so crammed with ridiculous over-the-top crap happening that individual actions carry no weight (seriously, the anime itself was far more grounded than this movie), and the sound mixing didn't help with everything but the Pokémon's various beam attacks sounding so flat, light and unimpactful.
Another example where I fail to understand Rotton Tomatoes: Pokémon the First Movie is literally so much better than this, yet it holds a 16% and this holds a 68%. I know ever since that Nostalgia Critic episode it's been memed to hell, but I'm serious. That movie has a great plot that's also interesting and far more original than Detective Pikachu's, is very well-paced, isn't rushed, has plenty of quieter scenes that let you soak in the atmosphere, plenty of character development, and definitely doesn't treat its audience like children nearly to the degree that Detective Pikachu does. So many scenes in this movie also attempted to recreate scenes from the anime and other movies for pure fanservice but with none of the context or buildup that made those scenes iconic in the first place.
To compare, in The First Movie:
In Detective Pikachu:
Like wtf is that plot? There's no moral weight to it at all, no development to speak of, nor is there with anything in Detective Pikachu. Ironic how Mewtwo's whole conflict originally was about him feeling like a misunderstood tool for humans, when in this movie he was nothing more than a tool for and misunderstood by the writers.
This movie is terrible.
I'm not even a huge Pokémon fan/elitist or anything- I watched the first few seasons of the anime and the first few movies as a kid, and I've barely even played the games, I just rewatched The First Movie for the first time in like 15 years after watching Detective Pikachu.

I thought that it was ok, nothing special, I personally liked Sonic movie better even though it wasn't anything spectacular either, the sequel will most likely be superior tho.

Haha, this brings us back to our conversation about critics from last summer. Even user reviews are more relevant nowadays.Adsolution wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 9:18 pm Another example where I fail to understand Rotton Tomatoes: Pokémon the First Movie is literally so much better than this, yet it holds a 16% and this holds a 68%.

I really recomend to everyone here the movie `Monty Python´s The Meaning of Life´ from 1983, i say it`s a weird movie, specially if you haven`t watched other Pythons movies.
Very fun, it even has a short before the movie even starts, from Universal.

Re: Movies you just recently watched
Just returned from "Spider-Man: No Way Home"... it was alright, it's IMO overhyped. The story was pretty weak and the dialogues were kind of cringy at times, I also didn't like how some of the story elements were handled though I'm not gonna thoroughly write it up given how I don't want to spoil major plot points, overall, it was a fun movie, I just feel that it could have been much better, I'd give it 7/10.

I've heard a lot of people talk about this Spiderman movie, however at the moment I'm not interested. I do like Doctor Octopus though.

Went to go see Spider-Man: No Way Home 3 times and enjoyed it a lot each time. From a writing standpoint, it's not at the heights of Into The Spider-Verse or Spider-Man 2. From an enjoyment standpoint however, it's a complete blast.

I ended up watching "Mother!" a couple days ago, and as is customary, it was as bad as the reviews were good.
I haven't had a movie bore me that much in quite a long time.

Re: Movies you just recently watched
I'd say it's easily my favourite Spider-Man movie. 2.5 hours has never gone by so quickly before, I was giddy from beginning to end. Not only was it so awesome to see Toby's Spider-Man for the first time in so long and in such a huge role, I'm really glad they paid equal respects to TASM and Andrew Garfield, because I think TASM movies get far too much hate, especially the second one, which I actually really liked.Ray502 wrote: Sat Feb 05, 2022 1:32 am Went to go see Spider-Man: No Way Home 3 times and enjoyed it a lot each time. Re: Movies you just recently watched
I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind last weekend. (Yeah I know, I'm late to the party…) It was intense and at times horrifying, but I stuck with it since I knew they couldn't be that bad if they seemed to be trying to communicate with humans. But I think it could have done without

The last movie I watched recently in a movie theater was back in April I think when I watched the Super Mario Bros. movie. Had a really great time that day!

The Mario Movie was definitely one that lent itself well to being viewed in a theater. The colors and animation truly were something else, so I personally feel it was the main draw of the film. The Jonster wrote: Mon Aug 21, 2023 5:34 pm The last movie I watched recently in a movie theater was back in April I think when I watched the Super Mario Bros. movie. The last movie I saw was “The Whale” a few months ago starring Brendan Fraser. Let me tell you, if you’re going to watch a movie on a plane, it should NOT be this one. I actually got a warning that flashed on the screen that said if there were any children in my vicinity, I should consider switching it to something else.
Probably the strangest opening to a movie I’ve ever seen. If you’re an adult, please just watch the first few minutes of the film so you can see the embarrassment I felt on that plane ride.

Re: Movies you just recently watched
The last movie I watched was an old movie. Myself and my partner watched "Not Another Teen Movie". I had never seen it before but I guess the plot of this one was just that it was supposed to be silly and not very serious. I found a few parts funny, but then again I laugh at silly things sometimes.
Re: Movies you just recently watched
The 5th Pirates of the Caribbean movie (Dead Men Tell No Tales) is from 2017, but I only watched it for the first time last week.

A few days ago I watched Matrix 1 again. It's amazing how advanced was this movie on its time. Have any of you seen the four movies?
