Smoke?

I was in one of those washing rooms a few weeks back and it smelled like smoke. I suppose whoever booked it didn't want to go out in the cold for a smoke.

If they did that in a hotel in the UK that would probably mean a grand going right down the toilet, so to speak. I think she did get done in the end but in Nottingham this woman was smoking drugs in the toilets in the railway station and set a whole platform on fire, and it was out of action for a year or so.

The current New Zealand news meant that I had a harder time looking for this article where this woman reckoned someone pranked her by swapping tobacco for bread. You could say she was gonna make a roll up. badoom tish.

It's like that in Ireland too ever since the big smoking ban took place in 2004. They even say people shouldn't smoke in their cars or vans, especially not taxis or company ones.

Also that's really weird how they ended up with bread, especially since it was still fresh.

There were a couple people in the UK that bought baccy and found bread in it as well and apparently that might have sounded more like someone in the factory padding the packet out with something basic like bread and essentially stealing the high value contents; than a silly prank on an individual. But then I heard about stuff from Amazon getting swapped out in transit as well.

Well even in a smoke-free vehicle like one of my in-law's cars, the fumes it makes can get really overwhelming because it gets condensed so that's one reason the ban on smoking with under 18s in the car kicked in here.

Smoking is horrible. With most other drugs, even dangerous ones, one can make a claim that you really hurt only yourself. You just need to have some very basic controls, like not driving or operating machinery or doing anything that affects others while under the influence, to make it mostly tolerable.

Not so with smoking. The problem with it is that it actively hurts non-smokers around you. It stinks, it triggers allergy attacks in some people, and no matter how considerate you try to be, there is simply nothing you can do, because, well, smoke spreads, whether you want it or not.

A neighbor that lives below us likes to smoke on her balcony. Open air, only when she is there alone. She really tries to avoid bothering people, and I never see her smoke in public or next to anyone. Well, darn, it's still not good enough. Because every time she smokes, if a window is open in my apartment overlooking her balcony, my home fills with the stench of smoke, and my wife complains because she is allergic. I am not allergic, but I am still bothered slightly. As a result - on most of the good weather days, I cannot enjoy a breeze in my apartment.

It seems like the only thing you can do as a smoker to not hurt others is to basically only smoke in your own home, with the windows closed (and then you suffocate), or in the woods with no other people in a 100 meter radius. Now show me a smoker that is willing to keep up the habit under those restrictions.

If you smoke, you wouldn't see what the big deal is, because you don't feel how much it stinks. My parents used to smoke all the time while I was growing up, and only when I moved out and away from an environment of near-constant smoke, I understood how annoying it actually was. It took several more years to get them to understand it, and stop smoking around us.

I can understand that feeling, my dad used to smoke all the time when I was a kid and as I got older the smell of smoke in the garage became more noticeable and bothersome for me. I remember attempting to hide my dad's cigarettes and lighter in an attempt to prevent him from doing so but I only succeeded in making him irritable. After seeing some of the posts in this thread, I can assume that dad must have been stressed a lot which is why he was constantly smoking. He doesn't smoke anymore now due to health problems, so even though I couldn't fix it, I'm glad he was able to stop on his own.

Funny story I remembered looking at this thread: I actually did try to smoke a cigarette once just to see what it was like. But I never got to light it, as I ended up chewing the end of the cigarette and immediately spitting it out because of how nasty the tobacco inside tasted.

It's curious to see everyone's take on smoking like this. I don't smoke so I can't understand how it feels but I get that people who do must have their own reason(s) and that's their business, I suppose.

After seeing some of the posts in this thread, I can assume that dad must have been stressed a lot which is why he was constantly smoking. He doesn't smoke anymore now due to health problems, so even though I couldn't fix it, I'm glad he was able to stop on his own.

That's almost the same story as my dad. He used to smoke a pack a day at minimum. Sometimes (possibly during stressful times) he would go up to a pack and a half and more. No one could get through to him. Then he had a heart attack. And that got through to him. He hasn't touched a cigarette since (it's been a few years already) and fixed up his habits in general.

It's even crazier when you realize once upon a time people used to chew tobacco instead of smoking it! Apparently that can give you oral cancer too...

I always said I'd never smoke and here I am with 2 years of smoking under my belt. I don't recommend it, I started doing it because I couldn't deal with a specific situation and I made my peace with that, but it really is a torturous habit and a fight within yourself. It's not new advice but it's the only advice I can give; just don't start doing it.

I'm still lucky enough to be a purely social smoker. Have been for close to 20 years, and I can still go on for weeks without smoking if I want to. It's just that I often enjoy it while having drinks, though much less in the winter as I'm often too lazy to go outside just for that.

I definitely try to live the same way at the very least, but once the magical time of one week has passed it becomes a lot more difficult to me because "oh I have waited one week so that must mean I've got complete mastery over this substance and I can do easily without if I want to" and I light up once again. It's just a giant rabbit hole you don't want to get stuck in . Once I move from this place and I can work somewhere else I expect I can make changes more easily because of the new environment but we'll see.
