< thinks it's interesting being back in Ireland and hearing peoples accents again after being abroad. :hap:

Aside from all the jokes, < thinks the Irish accent is beautiful. There's just something about the sound of it that really does it for <. :hap:

< really likes hearing Dublin accents in unexpected places, like this documentary about Black Mesa. (Or maybe Steo will correct me that it's not actually Dublin, but somewhere else in the east :fou:)

< has started hearing PSAs (or whatever they are) from Meta on the radio about smart glasses. It feels like something from the IT Crowd, or worse :confus:

< likes how much it can vary even within just a few kilometres, and any of them are better than that fake leprechaun one where they say top o' the mornin' to ya. :mefiant:

< thinks that's the delight of countries where a language has been spoken for such a long time. Naturally it's even more varied in England, since English has been spoken there for over a thousand years.

< finds it amusing how on Frasier, people assume Daphne's sophisticated because she has an "English accent", but to someone familiar with English accents it's actually a working-class Northern accent, which isn't sophisticated :P

< has somehow pulled an all nighter trying to think of responses to forums on <'s networking class instead of spending only 3 hours, and most of it was on research. How did this happen to <?

< hears Elon Musk is thinking of buying twitter, and increasing the maximum tweet length and adding an edit button. Those two changes make them sound more like forum posts, but still in a much more chaotic environment…

EDIT: OK, so apparently he's gone ahead and bought it :P

< wonders how Twitter will change.
< hopes something is done about Twitter forcing you to log in to see certain fan art just for being mildly risque.

< is mostly curious whether Musk can turn Twitter into a more efficient cash machine since its financial performance has been rather underwhelming (and I'm not convinced that it has a huge potential anyway).

< is applying for a video game development MSc which requires you to make and send a demo game in C++ just to apply! < had to learn the SDL2 library and how to make a proper game from scratch, and ended up remaking the thing from the bottom 3 times cause it was so messy... All that <'s waiting for (for a week now) is a reply from one of <'s previous lecturers for a reference. < hopes they reply soon or all that work will have been for nothing :oops2:

Well, not for nothing. < learned a lot making the thing. Here's a link to the repo if anyone wants to try it/look at the code: https://github.com/Ambidextroid/SDL2-demo

Not too bad! < had to tweak it a bit (and install SDL2_mixer!) to get it compiling on Linux, but yeah, it's nifty!

< has spent a significant portion of the weekend traversing several nodes of this graph:

< decided to try to fix a problem < has where one of <'s four CPU cores runs really hot under load. < reapplied thermal paste and reseated the heatsink, and the PC would no longer boot! :fou: Eventually < removed the liquid cooler entirely and reinstalled the dusty old stock cooler which had been sitting in a box for the last four years. And it works again, thank God! But now all the cores run hot under load :oops2:

Thanks! Experience from uni gives < the uneasy feeling that any program < makes will work flawlessly on <'s PC but explode on anyone else's because "runtime doodar 3000 is not warbled on 32 jiggyflop machines" or some other cryptic problem... to hear that it compiles on a totally different operating system (granted with some fiddling) gives < confidence :)

LOL < has been there before. < remembers trying to clean a little bit of grime from GameCube controller and ended up with an irreparable shoulder button. And those things are bloody expensive, especially the nice orange ones

Ah yes! Yep, all < had to do was change a few paths in the makefile, and fix some case mismatches in the #include directives (which matter on *nix, but not on Windows/DOS).

< recently booted up a very old computer that had Windows 98 on it, running on a Celeron at 333MHz. Clearly it's pretty useless these days, but < felt nostalgic running it, especially since <'s first ever PC was on 98. :hap:

Clearly < didn't plan to put that thing anywhere near the internet though.

Speaking of retro OSes… When <'s PC wouldn't boot the other day, < was looking into buying a new motherboard. But it seems that the motherboard < has is probably of the last generation where the SATA controller can be set to IDE mode, and where Legacy Option ROM support can still be enabled. So <'s DOS dual boot would probably have lost quite a bit of functionality (if it had worked at all) and < is really glad that < didn't end up having to replace the hardware in the end :hap:

< made an edit on RayWiki for the first time in 3 years. <'s been playing Rayman games a lot lately so < will be using the wiki more often for researching stuff.

< also found something very curious about <'s profile page. For some reason the links to <'s YT playlists that < made on Rayman games work despite the fact that < removed the videos in the playlists from YouTube. < finds that really unusual.
