Thank you!

Yeah, I hadn't noticed until Lyn pointed it out! :oops2: But then today I played that level again, and I realized you can actually hear an Armaguiddon starting up after he screams! So maybe it was more an "oh wow!" scream than one of horror!
Retrofuge wrote: Wed Aug 30, 2023 2:14 pm I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this. I have myself, Greenness and Raideryde have been archiving rare rayman pictures aswell as sifting through magazine articles for the last couple of days for a small project. I stumbled across the PLAY Magazine article which featured Rayman 3 dated back to April 2003. It had a lot interesting tidbits about the games development, interviews, artwork and screenshots of CPA (I think). Surprisingly, it was really in-depth, and I think it would be worth sharing with everyone. This is probably the most comprehensive look into Rayman 3. I'm not sure if it's been seen before. But if it's you're first time, here you go. :)
Thanks for posting that Retro, they seem to have enumerated the reasons I love this game! :D Although they didn't say much about the score system…

Great find, Retro! This was deeply interesting to read through! :D
Feels very nostalgic to see "Tak and The Power of Juju" on the cover too! Takes me back to some simpler times :nostalgic:

They definitely understood the magic of Rayman's world and what made 3 appealing as a sequel where Rayman grew alongside his players! And now we know Rayman had to go through the Teensie Highway everytime he stepped into a portal in 2. :noel:

They even referenced the "huge features" in page 017!
"Kill two Black Lums with one detached limb"... Guess that we have a new quote for "kill two birds with one stone" as well now. :hap:

Oh yes, I forgot to comment on that! I had always wondered if that was the intention… It must have been pretty exhausting for poor Ray to do that over forty times, or more if you had to backtrack! :fou2: But then he usually started or finished in the Hall of Doors. If it's anything like the Wood Between the Worlds from the Narnia books, the Hall probably induces a detached and peaceful state, which would enable him to recover quickly from such exhaustion!

Hall of Doors and Spiral Doors are like public transport, you don't drive and you have to get off at the station first.

Teensie Highways are like motorways, you're the driver and you have to put up with the road conditions. And there's always people blasting music, the roads aren't always the best and the roadworks just make things even more miserable and then you get detoured to some random place with a witch who clearly needs Polokus.

Something I've always liked about R3 is that there is no hub, it just takes you to the next world after you beat the previous one. It makes it feel like one big adventure!

The greatest advantage of being able to record the games I play is that I can now finally notice Rayman made this face. :hap:

So, if the Teensie Highways are like motorways, that means there are specific rules, like the speedlimit...

Do not get me started on speed limits :mefiant:

Anyway, from what those articles said, the Portals and the Highways are in fact the same thing, Rayman 2 just didn't show us the details. Which works really nicely in my mind, so I'm sticking with it :hap:

Someone should make a teensie highway for Rayman 2, and you would have to play it every time you play a level :hinhinhin:

Well, there would have to be over forty of them, one for each unique level transition. I don't think anyone has the time or patience to play that, never mind make them! :oops2:

Does that include transitions within a phase of a level too? I'd assume there'd probably be over 100 of those!

No, just the spiral doors. ;)

But now I'm wondering what happened in the transition from the Marshes of Awakening to the Cave of Bad Dreams… Jano hypnotizes Rayman and he imagines himself falling into a spiral door, and popping up in the Cave. Then he later emerges from the same spiral door and comes to his senses. But the whole thing was probably in his head, so there probably wasn't any highway involved…
Note that if you jump into that spiral door later on (after Jano disappears teleports to the other side of the map and becomes tiny) it doesn't take you to the Cave at all, but back to the Hall of Doors!

I'm guessing that's more a technical detail, tho perhaps Jano knows transdimensional engineering and can poke in secret routes in Teensie Highways xD

Guarding the Rayman universe's equivalent of Hades probably gives you time to take up some hobbies right

Also completely unrelated but it's lingering in my head so I want it on record before I forget. Up until now I've only comprehensively played the PC and PS2 versions of Rayman 3, and there was the quirk that consistently happened where if Rayman was at like 90% health, any lums he grimaced back into Red Lums would only give a point bonus but wouldn't actually heal him.

I'm currently playing thru the GCN version now, and I noticed that he will always be healed regardless of how much health he has, the only time it doesn't do anything is when he's already at max health. Dunno if this is documented which is why I brought it up in case folks wish to verify and log this difference.

I've seen cases on PC where the Red Lum disappears immediately after being converted, is that the same issue?

I was looking through the Rayman 3 NTSC manual, and I noticed some familiar artwork

Possibly, I'll see if I can record a comparison between PC and GCN to better illustrate what I'm trying to say ^^

Wait is that a 3D render of the ship from the GBA final boss?

It seems to be, I had to darken it because it has so hard to see on the actual manual  It's interesting to see that the R3 GBA art was converted from non-pixel artwork :waaahhh:

Indeed, makes me wonder what other items may have had 3D imaginings during R3 GBAs development 🤔

Well I said I would, behold:
PC Version

GameCube Version

Notice how while I get points when I convert black lums back to red in the PC version, I don't actually get health back unless I'm under some threshold. This is the behaviour I'm used to as I'm fairly certain the PS2 version also did this when I played Rayman 3 growing up.

The GCN version on the other hand, you'll see consistently always gives back health, regardless of what HP you're at. (Also while recording this I discovered what you meant by disappearing black lums, but I think that's a separate but possibly related phenomenon to what I'm attempting to describe here)

I also felt that the range of the grimace seems to be much shorter in the GCN version compared to the PC version.

Anyways, make of what you have seen as you will, I'm just glad to share this oddity and figure out if I'm going senile or not xD

You just unlocked an old memory of mine. I remember watching a friend play this game when we were young and assuming his PS2 copy must have been glitching as he wouldn’t always gain health back when grimacing. I had the GameCube version growing up, so I was used to Black Lums always healing you after transforming them back into Red Lums.

I guess this explains it. Interesting find.
