Rayman 2 Crashing despite trying known fixes

Post by Ardate »

Hi everyone,

I come to you all in my time of need, for I have been trying to get Rayman 2 to work on my computer for several days now with no luck.

-I am on Windows 11
-I have tried both Ubisoft Connect and GOG versions (not via the app, but a rom a friend gave me)
-Both crash to desktop after Rayman falls from the Buccaneer at the intro of the game, specifically when loading the next level.

I'll try and remember the list of fixes I've tried to list them all here, so you can see exactly which things haven't been working for me. Only some of those were tried on Ubisoft Connect version, but they all have been tried on the GOG one, because according to multiple forums and patch notes from fans, it seems to be the version that responds best to fixes.
So here is what was tried and failed:

-I have changed the compatibility to "Windows XP", and launched as administrator
-I have installed the game on my Desktop rather than the default GOG folder
-I have installed the "Rayman Control Panel" and had it install the Ray2Fix patch
-I had the Ray2Fix patch say "Missing files: GliVd1Vf.dll", and this did not change even after I manually downloaded and added that file to the Rayman folder. No clue if this is a key component to the patch, but either way, it did not work.
-I installed the Ray2Fix patch by hand rather than through the Control Panel, downloaded nGlide, had GliVd1Vf.dll in the R2 installation folder, problem remained the same
-I've also had an error saying "Cannot load GLI library" a couple times while trying fixes, though sadly I don't remember the exact context of what I was doing to get that

At this point I don't know what to try and I'm genuinely, deeply disheartened by this. I couldn't finish my playthrough of the game before going from my old Win7 machine to this new one and I'd hate never being able to play it again when it's consistantly been a favourite since childhood :(

If by chance there are someone out there capable of finding a fix, I'd forever be thankful. This community is my last chance.
Thank you all ♥

Welcome to the forum! :)

When you say "crash", I guess you mean a crash-to-desktop? Or does it hang? Or give aan error message / dump?

Thank you for the welcome! ♥

And I meant crash to desktop yes, sorry for not including that info! I'll edit it in if I can.

I had exactly the same issue, fixed it, and wrote a topic about it:

Thanks!
My DEP was default, and I did try making an exception with R2 but sadly the crash happens all the same.
I also tried switching renderers but it didn't work either.

Another fix for exactly the same issue is to:

reinstall the game and install pirate head DRM patch using Rayman Control Panel before launching the game for the first time.

But I can't tell what game version used the person who fixed the game that way.

I've tried that - reinstalled and added the pirate head DRM patch before launch, but it still crashed. Uninstalled and reinstalled and then added both pirate head DRM and Ray2Fix before launch to see if it would do the trick, but no luck. :(
Thank you for continuing to try and send me options though, I appreciate it even through the despair hahahah

EDIT: tried replying to your helpful DM but it seems I can't use that function? Maybe my account is too young. Either way, I'll try that out, and get back to you. Thank you very much

EDIT2: Apologies for the double post, but to reply to your DM deton: somehow none had sound, and sadly none worked either - they all crashed at the usual moment :(
I haven't tried applying the patches to any yet, but given the fact those patches haven't worked for any of the versions I have applied them to before, I don't think it will change much...
Beyond the frustration I'm starting to genuinely get curious as to what it is that causes this specific crash on my machine with literally no fix working for it. It's unbelievable :')

I'm getting out of ideas.
Maybe try to turn off core isolation

Deton, didn't you say previously there was some little-known log feature in Windows that might give more info on the crash? (Or maybe you already mentioned that in the PM :oops2:)

Well, they probably still get the same access violation issue with 0xc0000005 error code so I didn't even bothered to ask, seeing it happens in exactly the same place as for me before. I just assumed something other then DEP might cause it this time, but if the OP is willing to share error log from Event Log, it won't harm to look at it, indeed.

From other possible solutions coming to my mind:
- Download and use take ownership script on the Rayman folder.
https://www.elevenforum.com/t/add-take- ... s-11.1230/
Privileges might be another culprit of these access violation issues.
Although the OP already installed the game outside of default location before IRC, and
one fix I know was to install the game outside the default GOG Galaxy location, but it won't harm to try fixing privileges anyway.

- Maybe temporarily disable AV (no the greatest advice, but...)

- Download inSpectre and temporarily disable vulnerability patches in it and restart PC (although never heard about issues with them)

@Ardate - perhaps I've missed it - but what are your hardware specs (CPU, GPU, RAM)?

Is your Rayman 2 running in Glide mode (via emulation) or Direct3D? Is there an option to switch in GXSetup?

That issue happened for me on both Glide and Directx and probably no matter what wrapper I used, but it can be checked.

Edit. One thing also wonders me. If it's possible that DEP setting in the system is overridden by the DEP setting in the Windows Defender. If they differ for some reason, that might be the culprit.
