I wonder if anyone has any ideas for the next one then? There's no harm in trying to bring it back again.

As long as it's not a scoring challenge (one of the buttons i use to control Rayman 3 with is broken), I think I'll be up for it. Just need to refresh myself with Bandicam....

Personally, I feel like doing an R2 racing challenge...both Walks have been used but.......

I could have said we could wait for another entry, but to be honest months have passed now and no one else seems to have taken up the challenge, and when it was bumped again by Steo the consensus was already for starting a new challenge. Maybe we can launch this particular challenge another time and maybe yours won't be the only entry by that timeframe! :)

I suppose for the most part I can do challenges that stick to the mainline games since I have at least one version (mostly PC) for each game. Well, after I remap my keyboard controls, which isn't going to be hard in the UbiArt games. The trilogy though....well... :oops2:

But for other games like Rayman M/Arena I'd have to use an emulator. I wonder if it would be fine using that as long as I don't use cheats and record the entire gameplay of me doing it.

Have you tried using this version of Rayman Arena? No emulator needed.

Re: Challenge of the Month #17 - Top of the World challenge

Post by The Jonster »

Hey guys! After talking with Steo, I've decided to take over running the challenges for the next two months! Let's see how this goes.......

Here is the challenge for November:

The goal is to collect everything (as in yellow lums and cages) in Top of the World, phase 2, and finish within the fastest time!

A few things to note for this challenge:

- You have to start fresh as if you're going through the phase for the first time in a playthrough.

- It might be difficult to start a recording within loading times between the first and second phases (Rayman is still in the chair at this point), so the starting point will be where Rayman lands after getting out of the chair.

Edit: The deadline will be November 30, the end of the month!

That's cool! If I don't have the free time to give it a try, I'll submit what I recorded for the RayWiki, even if I don't focus on speedrunning that section.
Good luck for everyone!

Nice, I would like to try this one, however, first I have figure out if I can use my CD to play or if I have to buy the game again like I did with R3.

Best of luck Elite! :)

I hope I'll have time to submit an entry myself, I haven't done one of these in a long time.

Thanks, I'm already playing the game and trying to get to the Top of the World level. Hopefully you are able to submit an entry too.

Btw, am I the only one that thinks that the Ting prizes for these challenges are too low (in SOTM you're at least get 550 Tings). Maybe back in the day the amounts made sense, but now you need more Tings to access the higher ranks. So yeah, I'm basically demanding the Ting rewards to be adjusted for inflation .

Yes, it is quite low isn't it? Well by the time the contest is over (if there are any entries....i still have to make mine later), the Ting prizes will have been upgraded on the first page. Maybe I could do some tweaking here and there too......of course, that's if anyone participates at all.

It's probably true that the prizes are a little low given this contest takes effort to set up and also to compete in. I think it's something the staff can discuss. ;)

A very bad run, but I guess it's better than nothing. First time recording gameplay with OBS, please let me know if it is a valid submission.

Yes that should be fine, nice run! Your time seems to clock in at about 5:16. :)

Thinking about it, challenges like these might be difficult to time though since there's no in-game timer....hmmm what to do about that.

I wouldn't worry about it. Remember that sometimes the in-game timers are wrong anyway, so you have to count frames anyway!

Yeah the Rayman 2 timer for the races with Ly was very broken and inconsistent. I wouldn't rely on those and would rather use real time to count. The only issue is you could be counting at only 30fps (depending on the framerate of the submission), which would be 33.3ms between frames. In this case, it would be hard to settle a close call, though it's still probably unlikely and could still be determined by how far past the finish line they are on the subsequent frame etc.

Well here's my attempt for now:

I had to make 2 attempts because the first one didn't turn out right. My attempt clocks at around 4:01.

I see. Well I don't have any experience with counting frames in a video from the fps though, hopefully it won't be too hard for me to do so. :oops2:

EDIT: Something weird that I didn't notice. In this attempt, I started at a position further than Elite when I first started running. Not sure what caused this but I didn't realize landing points could be different.

I won't have time to give it a try, so I'll submit what I recorded for the RayWiki a few months ago. Obviously it isn't that fast as it wasn't intended to be an speedrun, but a chill gameplay focused on showing everything calmly . It took me 7min48s.

It's nice to see that you were able to submit videos too. Also, I guess the Tings will be distributed during the weekend?
