Re: Smoothies !!!
I sometimes have a smoothie at work for lunch if I feel like it, but I usually go for the stuff that makes you fat instead.
Re: Smoothies !!!
Ho ho ho, then you certainly wouldn't mind Santa gifting you some chocolate smoothies or even mint chocolate smoothies for Christmas then!Hunchman801 wrote: Tue Dec 05, 2023 4:52 pm I sometimes have a smoothie at work for lunch if I feel like it, but I usually go for the stuff that makes you fat instead.![]()
Re: Smoothies !!!
My girlfriend made a smoothie the other day that had stuff like banana and blueberry in it. It was pretty tasty, and it's hard to believe these things are actually good for you despite tasting good.

Re: Smoothies !!!
I know right? The right ingredients make them taste great! I have been putting spinach into all my smoothies lately to get some veggies in. They're not noticeable so I could put lots in! The latest combination I've been wanting to try now consists of spinach, banana, pineapple, and coconut milk.

Re: Smoothies !!!
Man, I'm imagining Santa doing so for the grins and giggles now.
You know, my co-worker has a small battery operated blender she makes her smoothies in. Those are actually pretty handy from what I can tell! Rechargeable via USB C and all too. I bet those would make good stocking stuffers.

Re: Smoothies !!!
I recently learned yesterday about portable blenders. Since you mentioned battery-operated, I wonder if that's what your co-worker has? I should mark something like that on my wishlist tbh.Hoodcom wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:21 am You know, my co-worker has a small battery operated blender she makes her smoothies in. Our blender is mains powered, but the only thing is that you have to kind of use it in bursts, otherwise it starts to heat up too much and smell like burning. Of course, we don't want the latter. The Jonster wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 6:02 pm I recently learned yesterday about portable blenders. Re: Smoothies !!!
Oh yeah, that happens to the small blender I have in my house too when I use it too long, though this is more common when my blender is full of liquid.

Re: Smoothies !!!
Yeah, it is battery-operated. You can recharge it off USB and everything. When she's done she just takes it to the kitchen area and cleans it out and it's ready for the next one she wants. Those things are super cool and handy. Definitely a good idea to mark on your wishlist if you want one!The Jonster wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 6:02 pm I recently learned yesterday about portable blenders. Re: Smoothies !!!
It was happening ours when we made a smoothie with blueberry in it. My gf doesn't like loud noise, so I was doing it for her. She told me not to hold it for too long then due to that exact reason, and then I was like "oh yeah I can smell it".The Jonster wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 6:38 pm Oh yeah, that happens to the small blender I have in my house too when I use it too long, though this is more common when my blender is full of liquid.

Re: Smoothies !!!
I'm just gonna blame y'alls 240 volts mains, since we use 120 volts for the smaller appliances and electronics here.Steo wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 6:12 pm Our blender is mains powered, but the only thing is that you have to kind of use it in bursts, otherwise it starts to heat up too much and smell like burning. Though you do have me curious, because I don't recall having to need to use blenders only in bursts here, but we haven't used a blender in a long ass time.
Re: Smoothies !!!
I wondered the same thing about kettles when it comes to the US. I know you mentioned that you had a 240v line in your home, via use of -120v and +120v, though I don't know if everyone has that option. I heard that the US doesn't generally have kettles for this reason, and that they would just heat tea in a microwave instead. I'm not sure how true this is so I thought I'd mention it to someone who might know.Hoodcom wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 8:13 pm I'm just gonna blame y'alls 240 volts mains, since we use 120 volts for the smaller appliances and electronics here.![]()

As for the blender itself, I guess they get a bit stiff especially if they're older, so that could be part of the reason also. The idea of the motor taking in so much power though could still be the reason, as it would be spinning so fast and heating up instantly too.

Re: Smoothies !!!
My mom makes tea in the microwave despite there being a kettle in the kitchen. I prefer to use the kettle when making hot drinks, since microwaves, as I've started realising, tend to heat things unevenly.Steo wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 8:26 pm I heard that the US doesn't generally have kettles for this reason, and that they would just heat tea in a microwave instead. Re: Smoothies !!!
Every home here has 240V available. Every transformer on the poles for each home has this available.Steo wrote: Thu Dec 07, 2023 8:26 pm I wondered the same thing about kettles when it comes to the US. High voltage is fed on the input side, how much varies around here and that isn't the point of this example. As you can see there are three taps on the output side. In this example X2 is the center tap, 0V that can be grounded to earth and this is our neutral line.
X1 and X3 are the line voltages.
X1 to X3 would be 240VAC.
X1 to X2 and X3 to X2 would be 120VAC.
There are two main legs that come into our breaker panels.
Generally the color coding is like so:
- Black - Hot
- Red - Hot
- White - Neutral
- Green - Ground/Earth
Our double pole breakers are used for 240VAC appliances, typically used for central air conditioners, electric clothes dryers, electric furnaces, electric base board heaters, electric ovens, electric stoves, electric water heaters, and anything that requires a lot of power.
In my case, I have some high power audio amplifiers that also use 240VAC.
You do gain efficiency with the hire voltage, but most things are still wired for 120VAC, even including microwave ovens, toaster ovens, tea kettles, blenders, toasters, and various other things around the house.
Also yikes, I went a bit lengthy with this one, but yeah, I hope that helps regardless!
There's your fun fact for smoothie enthusiasts!

Re: Smoothies !!!
But anything that needs 240 V needs to be specially wired, right? You can't just plug it into the wall?
Also, black being hot… Damn…
Now I'm curious about the high voltage… What specs are there? Here about half the country is on 10 kV (the original spec from 1929) and the other half has been upgraded to 20 kV (which started being rolled out in the 90s) but the poles are identical. I think it's because they've engineered it so the insulators stand off the full phase-phase voltage on the 10-kV system, but they're also good for the phase-to-ground voltage on the 20-kV system, which is 20/sqrt(3) kV (about 12?).
Umm… Maybe this should be continued on the Science Topic or similar?
To get somewhat back to the point, since Steo and I talked about kettles, I noticed that on Frasier they always used non-electric kettles which go on the hob. (Whereas the hobs were mostly electric, presumably wired at 240 V)

Speaking of smoothies, maybe some of you folks could share some of your secret recipes for people with zero smoothie making experiences like me.
Though right now I think it's a little too cold to have a smoothie, or ice cream for that matter.

Re: Smoothies !!!
Usually I would go for a combination of spinach and banana in smoothies I drink. My sister doesn't like bananas that much so I put less in hers. Recently though, I tried to make a raspberry banana smoothie. Tried straining the mixture after blending cuz I don't like tasting the seeds (had a back experience with a blackberry smoothie i made years ago) but i don't think that worked. Mom and I liked the taste but I only had a sip, mom drank half and the rest was for sister (I'm not sure if she drank it though....)
