Rayfanpedia, the wiki for Rayman fanworks

Post by Hunchman801 »

As announced during Rayman Alive, the yearly community event showcasing fan projects, we are proud to announce the launch of Rayfanpedia, the wiki for Rayman fanworks!

The talent and creativity of the Rayman community are quite outstanding, and the aim of this project is to document them as thoroughly and extensively as possible. Whether you're looking to read about the great projects fans are working on, or to write about your own, Rayfanpedia is the place for this!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank dr_st and Rayman Saturn, who initially posited the ideas that evolved into Rayfanpedia, created most of its content as of today and accepted to become its benevolent dictators. I must also thank Hoodcom and Elite Piranha, the architects of Rayfanpedia's visual identity, without whom the site would have looked no different from a million others. Special thanks go to Unheard, Rayman Universe and Adsolution, for being early editors and writing about their wonderful projects, and Pirate-Community's moderating team for their support and advice.

I hope you will take as much pleasure browsing and contributing to this project as we had creating it. The floor is yours now!

It was honestly a pleasure to help work on Rayfanpedia, and I hope you all get to enjoy it for many years to come!

Speaking of the Rayman Alive event, I enjoyed watching it, I'm blown away by the hard work of all the talented creators have put into their projects and I'm excited to see them continue to grow! Thank you everyone who have put so much work into your fan projects, and thank you everyone who also helped out with Rayfanpedia!

We definitely help make this community great! Image

Nice work on this Hoodcom and Hunch. I know that I could see it under the hoodcom all along (sorry ), but it's really nice to actually see it in action. Even just seeing it in the trailer was really nice. Knowing it's finally in action now after all your work must really pay off. :D

The "secret" is finally revealed! :bad:

Crazy that what originally started as an idea by a few people like me and dr_st in Redemption-related topics evolved into a proper sister project for the RayWiki! I'm so proud of how far this has come!
We both took care of the big work on the current articles (except for those made by the fangame's creators themselves like Adsolution, Unheard or Rayman Universe), while we have to thank Hunch for making it all possible, and Hoodcom and Elite for the visual identity! You guys all did such a great work!
(Though, if anyone thinks the logo with the Rayman behind is meh, blame me, I made it as a quick placeholder back when we had no logo )

Here's the very quick Rayman Alive poster I made for it today! :noel:

Rayfanpedia Teaser.png
Credits to Elite Piranha for his amazing Plum logo which I've hid behind Rayman's hand in this teaser, and to Unheard for the original Rayman Alive logo!
Personnally, I like to refer to this majestic fruit as the Plum of Knowledge! :proud:
And Rayman Alive was indeed a blast! So much hype! I'm so proud of this community. :nostalgic:

And keep in mind: this is a fanwork wiki, not a fanon one! So don't spam it with stuff like theories, your ReDesigner levels or your Rayman X Ly emo romantic fanfics! :P
You can make and use your own userpage if you want to share and document that kind of stuff there, if you want! :mryellow:
We stricly focus on fangames, but other fan content like animations can be an exception and get their articles if they're relevant enough.

Are you talking about this logo?

I wouldn't call it "meh", to be quite honest that logo is what sparked my inspiration for the color of the theme!

I simply loved how it worked out in the end! Image

That one indeed! I think it could just use some improvements to look more "clean" (dem rough pixels!), and the Rayman silhouette should be replaced with a similar-looking fanmade art rather than the official Rayman 1 pic with a gradient hastily sprayed over it.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind if we replace it with one of the other designs Elite Piranha came up with! But if people like it a lot as it is, I guess we can just keep it and tweak the rough edges!

You should also thank dr_st then, after all it's him who pitched the original purple idea when we first discussed the Rayfanpedia's visual identity, and so I chose matching colours for the logo! :mryellow:
I also randomly suggested the idea of plums matching the hypothetical purple theme as the plum fanatic that I am, and then a plum ended up becoming our glorious logo! We truly inspired each other all the way through!
Anyway, you and Elite did a fantastic work on the fanpedia's graphic aspect! It looks unique and absolutely stunning! I'm really proud of our new platform!

By the way, I think we should now link to the Fanpedia on the RayWiki! Like in the list of Pirate-Community links for example. Perhaps some news too wouldn't hurt!

Here are also two other versions of the RA poster I had attempted.
I wanted to use one of our old name ideas as a codename before the reveal... but then I thought it would be too confusing and rolled with the other version :noel:

I would suggest to stick with one logo, and if the problem is that the page looks a bit empty , I would suggest to experiment with new sections or with different distributions of the elements. In my view having two different logos at the same time, could be confusing for some people.

So it was you! Were you also the one that suggested the idea of having various symbols from Rayman's world covering the plum?

It's so nice to see fangames finally getting their own little space, and what a lovely space it is! I sadly missed Rayman Alive (again! I really need to watch both videos soon to fix that! :tssk:) this year but I did poke into the fanpedia's front page just earlier and really liked what I saw! I'm sure everyone worked really hard on it, and the logos are fantastic! It really feels like the raywiki for fangames!

I'm glad you guys like it! With all the wonderful projects that have been showcased at Rayman Alive, there will be no shortage of things to write about on Rayfanpedia.

As for the genesis of the magic plum of knowledge, I believe it started with dr_st's idea of a purple theme and Rayman Saturn's remark that it would be reminiscent of the series' iconic plums. As Hoodcom made the purple theme a reality, I had the idea of plagiarizing Wikipedia's logo, only with a plum and symbols from Rayman's world instead. Finally, I shared the idea with Elite, who improved on it and created this magnificent logo which would never have been more than just an idea without him. Ain't that amazing teamwork? :proud:

We sure are a great team of thieves! :P
Even when not interacting directly at times, we influenced each other's work on this wonderful new platform!

Now that the project is out... anyone interested in yet another promotional poster to celebrate? :noelfou:

Also, I think I've digged up one of the original catalysts for this fan RayWiki! :hehe: (with this topic and this one setting the idea in stone)
Rayman Saturn wrote: Sun Jun 13, 2021 7:17 pm By the way, I’ve been thinking it would be interesting to have a wiki dedicated to his fangames.
With Rayman The Dark Magician’s Reign of Terror, Redemption and its Gameplay Demo, ReDesigner, Bowling 2, the two Spooky Raymansion games as well as the scrapped projects Ryemanni has shown in some of his streams, there’s more than enough matter for a good wiki and it could be an opportunity to generate some more interest around some of the games.
I’ve seen a few people hoping for a wiki and even asking to make some articles here, but the RayWiki isn’t made for unofficial games and so I’ve been thinking about Fandom or other websites like that. I would love to do something myself, but I sadly don’t have the time to and I don’t even know how to make a wiki article, so I’m curious if anyone here is up to the challenge. :mryellow:
And PluM called it "kinda crazy"! We sure showed you! :fou: :hap:
(and I sure came a long way since the times of "butz I dont knoow ow 2 doo Wii™ki articlezzz!!1!1!" :noelnoir: :oops2: )

As someone who wanted for so long a Rayfanwiki for games like Redemption or ReDesigner, it felt amazing to make this idea come to fruition, and it's a great honor to have been one of the pioneers of a new expansion for a community as great as the RPC! :nostalgic:
I kinded of missed the previous edition of RA when it premiered but I got to watch the new one in its entirety! It was really a blast, it was like been hyped while seeing tons of great reveals during a good E3, except it was all Rayman games! :coeur:
Definitely worth a watch when you'll have the time!

We hope you'll all have a great time with the Rayfanpedia! :)
ChronicTraitor wrote: Sun Dec 17, 2023 5:16 am I'm sure everyone worked really hard on it, and the logos are fantastic! It really feels like the raywiki for fangames!
And that is indeed the intention! Even if we're talking about fan creations, we want the Rayfanpedia to be experienced and treated about as seriously as the RayWiki! :mryellow:

The funny thing about that, is I had zero prior knowledge to any of that when I jumped in.

It was quite hilarious that the logo made me think of a purple theme too, so it clearly shows the amazing team work this easily created, especially with the team synergy we had with this.

It was fun though, and again the plum logo Elite did is spectacular. I love the outcome of it, it really helps pull together the theme for this magic plum of knowledge. 8)

I had completely forgotten about this 2021 discussion in the Redemption topic, I should have taken note of the interest for it back then!

There's also this topic from 2009, where I'm basically saying that it's fine for notable fan games to have one article each on RayWiki. I guess we were still defining the wiki's scope back then, because we've obviously changed our minds since. For my defense, there weren't anywhere as many fan games back then!

Thank you!

A great team synergy indeed! :proud:

I can only approve, that Plum is glorious! Funny how the Magic Book of Knowledge which we also suggested as a name idea for the Rayfanpedia has persisted as its "mascot" name! :noel:
(And now that I craftily suggested both of these and made it enter people's minds, the Plums are mere steps away from taking over their brains and then the entire world! It's BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! MUHAHAHAHA! :bad: :fou: )

To be fair, even as of 2021, there wasn't as much to document about Rayman fangames to really warrant a complete Wiki for them (which is also why I originally imagined an external project focusing on Ryemanni's creations as a whole since he released so many fangames back then and some of the most renown ones, and he's making his own unrelated projects too).
People wanting that were definitely a minority... and not even a vocal one. So PluM calling it kinda crazy wasn't that wrong

It would also be hard to criticize you on that when many of the projects from the 2000s/2010s were either abandoned or are still in the development stage, and even most of the current ones we know about are still works in progress.
After all, the most reoccurring "release date" in the current list of fangames is still "unreleased", but it became less common starting from 2015 and it seems we're entering the era where this is about to definitely change! :)
We've never had such a consistent wave of new unofficial games being announced and/or released than since we entered the 2020s! :mryellow:

Speaking of the RayWiki and Rayfanpedia, we definitely need to give a big clean update to both of the lists of notable fanworks. :oops2:

Thank you, Humch, and team for taking part in the effort to make this a reality! Yes, synergy is the right word here. It all kind of came together in the right moment, with a multi-talented team, where each member contributed in their area of expertise - content, back-end, graphical design, UI, anything. The logo is awesome!

I remember how I wanted to cover Rayman Redemption in a wiki page, but the article would have never got anywhere close to what it is, without Rayman Saturn's deep knowledge of some aspects and vast collection of screenshots. I recall throwing in the idea of purple theme, but would have not been able to make anything remotely as gorgeous and consistent as what Hoodcom did. Saturn's purple Rayman logo is sweet and indeed, far from "meh", but Elite's plum is just so spectacular.

It really feels great to have been part of this initial effort. And just a couple of days after Rayman Alive, I see a bunch of new edits and editors, and I just know that Rayfanpedia is going to have a life of its own now, just like Raywiki. I will do my best, of course, to come back and edit and improve, as I find time to do so. Typically in burst of activity following long periods of hiatus, just like on Raywiki.

Hey hey hey now… :pascontent: I wasn't saying it was a bad idea, just that it was a bit mind-bending having so many levels of unofficialdom!

I am really happy that this now exists and it's been an absolute pleasure watching it take shape with all the work that Hoodcom poured into the styling and the amazing graphic design by Saturn and Elite!

There's always going to be a grey area, but I think it can be uploaded to RayWiki. No need to upload it on both since Rayfanpedia can display RayWiki files.

Like we really need a wiki with just a single page, titled "BZZIT"?

But of course, next year, we'll take it one step further - Rayfanpedia-pedia - a wiki about the fan wiki!
