Eminem
So following on what was mentioned here, I thought it made sense to make an Eminem topic.
When it comes to Eminem, I think my favourite albums are the Marshall Mathers LP and the Eminem Show. I really liked some of the songs from 8 Mile also, Lose Yourself was a really good one. I also liked some songs from Encore even though things were getting a little strange by this point, and I liked You Don't Know from the Re-Up. When I'm Gone was also a good one, from when he was going to retire. I used to listen to this one a lot as a teen.
Feel free to discuss anything Eminem related here!

Re: Eminem
It sounds like many have heard of him or know him, so yes, it will be interesting to see discussions about him.
Well, many of you may have already seen it throughout my posts, but I unexpectedly ended up being gifted five physical Eminem albums (The Marshall Matters LP, The Slim Shady LP, The Eminem Show, Encore and Music to be Murdered By). I don't have The Eminem Show right now here, so when I get all five together I'll take a picture of them
. I think I share this opinion with most, and it's just that I prefer the classic albums. If I had to choose my favorite, it would be between The Marshall Matters LP and The Eminem Show.
Relapse also has good songs. It's not that modern and, if I remember correctly, it's one of the first times he tells a story about overdose (specifically on Deja Vu, which includes a quite strong message).
It is true that many of his current songs have a certain political connotation. In the end, in a genre like rap, which is characterized by expressing personal circumstances or facts of today's society, it is easy to find omething political. In fact, even if it's a more delicate subject, I prefer 1000 times an Eminem song dealing with a political subject than a song of these modern "rappers" telling you for 6 minutes how much money they have and how many girls they f*ck.
Kamikaze and Music to be Murdered By aren't bad... Obviously, they are not as good as the first ones (and I don't think it will ever be), but unlike other artists, Eminem has known how to age well.

Re: Eminem
I'm going to hard agree here. I can't stand this kind of rap personally and it actually annoys me how dumb I think it sounds. I was in a car the other day and I heard one of these songs; at one point the lyrics literally said "ass pussy boobs APB". What the hell is that supposed to be!?DaveRattlehead wrote: Thu Dec 28, 2023 7:58 pm I prefer 1000 times an Eminem song dealing with a political subject than a song of these modern "rappers" telling you for 6 minutes how much money they have and how many girls they f*ck.
Like wow, so inspirational, you took the names of some body parts, mashed them together, then formed them into an acronym that sounds extremely primary school because somehow that helps you remember the parts of a woman's body? Congrats man, you did it!

Re: Eminem
I've never liked him, but at least Lil Wayne has had some good songs in the past. In contrast, these "mumble rappers" of today? I've tried, but there are very few examples of songs that I can actually like from these "artists".
In fact, regarding these mumble rappers, Eminem dedicates some songs to them in Kamikaze

Thanks for picking up the task!
Well, as he said, very explicitly in Talkin' 2 Myself (from the "Recovery' album):Steo wrote: Thu Dec 28, 2023 6:19 pmI also liked some songs from Encore even though things were getting a little strange by this point
Encore I was on drugs, Relapse I was flushing 'em out
So the weirdness has a very concrete explanation to it.
Awesome! I bought most of his albums, at least the LPs - I have them from 'Slim Shady LP' all the way to 'Revival'. I thought I was missing his latest one, but turns out I am missing his two latest ones, since before 'Music to be Murdered by' he released 'Kamikaze' (although its runtime is more like an EP and not an LP). I also have the '8 Mile' album and an unofficial collection of songs (which I think is a pirated release).DaveRattlehead wrote: Thu Dec 28, 2023 7:58 pm Well, many of you may have already seen it throughout my posts, but I unexpectedly ended up being gifted five physical Eminem albums (The Marshall Matters LP, The Slim Shady LP, The Eminem Show, Encore and Music to be Murdered By).
I'll show you my collection after you show me yours.
For sure! And I might even end up buying his last two albums, eventually. My experience is that almost every album of his (and not just his) takes some time to grow on me, but eventually I end up liking a lot of songs on it (and sometimes even change favorites over time).DaveRattlehead wrote: Thu Dec 28, 2023 7:58 pm I prefer 1000 times an Eminem song dealing with a political subject than a song of these modern "rappers" telling you for 6 minutes how much money they have and how many girls they f*ck.
Whatever one may think of his political opinions or his personal life - Eminem is an very talented poet, and he has a great rap flow too. I watched a couple of conversations he's had with colleagues or talk show hosts, where they would just talk about lyrics and how to come up with them and how to work them into a song - it's just like watching programming nerds talk about design patterns and compilers. You can feel their excitement, love for the art and understanding of it.

I think that's precisely why listening to him talk about politics doesn't make me squeal so much. Now that you mention it, I will always remember the video comparing the structure and complexity of "Killshot" and "Rap Devil" (Machine Gun Kelly's song criticizing him). It's not only worth noting that he destroyed him... In the comparison you clearly saw who is an ordinary singer and who is, as you rightly said (and I love the adjective), a poet.dr_st wrote: Thu Dec 28, 2023 10:47 pm Whatever one may think of his political opinions or his personal life - Eminem is an very talented poet, and he has a great rap flow too. Re: Eminem
Nice! And it's the Deluxe Edition of "Music to be Murdered By", with the bonus disc, right?
Here's mine: Points of interest:
I do have this much and more albums from other rappers and groups he has worked with - from his own 'band' D12, through Dr Dre, and a couple more. Also two rap soundtracks. I can post those too, if anyone is interested, but didn't want to derail this thread too much from the get go.
Another nice thing about Eminem albums - most of them (from the Eminem Show all the way to Recovery) include full song lyrics in the booklet! Not in the last two I have, though. I wonder - what about "Music to be Murdered By" - does it come with lyrics?
Here's mine: Points of interest:
- The top right "Unreleased Collection" is indeed a collection of songs of various artists, featuring Eminem, and of some songs that sound like early production pieces. It says 'Manufactured by Rupa Records Canada", but I could find no record of any other release by said company. Must be a bootleg, but of a rather high quality - pressed CD, front and back inserts and all.
- The bottom center is the 2013 album "The Marshall Mathers LP 2 - Deluxe Edition". It is the only one with special packaging - a custom 2-CD "digipak" with an extra section for the booklet.
- I believe that my copy of 'Revival' is the only one that was purchased in the U.S., therefore lacking the 'Parental Advisory - Explicit Content' label.

Re: Eminem
Yeah, sure, I'm curious about it. In the end it's all Eminem related, so it's the perfect topic for it, isn't it?
And exactly, the Deluxe version from Music to be Murdered By includes the bonus disc (named Side B) and the lyrics in the booklet, just like the other albums. Also, as it's the deluxe edition, the box art is different.

Here you see Dr. Dre's albums on top and D12 (Eminem's group) + Obie Trice on bottom. Strangely, I never bought or listened to Obie's second album, even though I really liked the first.
And here you can see albums by Xzibit, 50 Cent, as well as the soundtracks to "The Wash" and "8 Mile". I'd say I probably liked the soundtracks the best, for all the different artists featured on them!
Well, I bit the bullet and ordered Em's remaining studio albums, which are not currently in my collection, from Amazon.DaveRattlehead wrote: Sat Dec 30, 2023 2:58 pmAnd exactly, the Deluxe version from Music to be Murdered By includes the bonus disc (named Side B) and the lyrics in the booklet, just like the other albums. Re: Eminem
Would you double-check that for me? I just received my copy from Amazon, and my booklet only seems to have credits for all the songs (although pretty long ones), not lyrics. So I wonder if there may have been multiple releases of this album.DaveRattlehead wrote: Sat Dec 30, 2023 2:58 pm And exactly, the Deluxe version from Music to be Murdered By includes the bonus disc (named Side B) and the lyrics in the booklet, just like the other albums. Re: Eminem
Apparently I went some time without having heard Houdini and when the day came that I did hear it and see the music video I cannot believe he has that beard now.
Re: Eminem
I have been so much out of touch, that my sister is the one that had to point it out to me that Houdini (and then the whole album, apparently) had been released.
I've watched the Houdini video. It's nice with all the references, but somehow the song itself doesn't "do" it for me. Weird, because everyone tells me it's great.

All Houdini has made me do is just sing Abracadabra but every line is gonna reach out and grab ya.

I really do have to find time to at least listen to Kamikaze and Music to be Murdered By...

Not to mention, my niece who is 10 is a bit obsessed with Eminem at the moment. TBF her mother was her age when My Name Is was out so you know, I totally get it.

Re: Eminem
Does anyone else prefer Eminem songs that don’t sound like Eminem songs over ones that do? I think that might be an unpopular opinion among hardcore fans
Re: Eminem
I am not sure I see a clear differentiation between what Eminem songs sound like they are his versus those that do not, but I can say that he has such a distinct voice/tembre/rhythm/whatever, that I often can detect his songs by just hearing a short snippet in a noisy gym through my headphones in which other music is playing. Happened to me yesterday.

Re: Eminem
So yesterday I celebrated my birthday with my family and my sister gave me again (not gonna complain about this
) another album! This time it was his most recent release.
Again, the little book doesn't include the lyrics
What are your thoughts about this album?
