The GOG PC version FTW. I'm replaying the game in Russian right now and enjoying every second.
(well, not at this very instant, since I'm watching the Rayman: Alive (2023) Premiere! :P)

Wait, you're able to play the GOG PC version? I thought I heard people say it's not really working on modern machines very well anymore. Or did you managed to make it work out okay?

My friend neo was about to get it and everyone was like "No wait!".

Works great for me on a 7th gen Intel Core laptop running Win10 x64. I had to install Ray2Fix for the Russian language mod, but I recall the base game worked out of the box.

Just going to Quote this from ROTG instead of posting out of turn over there:

Ah that explains why I didn't understand it, because I usually play the Dreamcast, which has the Isle of Doors. I spent ages scratching my head earlier thinking "what hologram". :P

I find it strange/funny that Globox is listed as Public Enemy number 2 by the Pirates.

I get that Rayman is Public Enemy Number 1 to them, by Globox seriously ranks higher than Clark or Ly to the Pirates? Dude runs from them and never fights unless he is pushed into a corner and has no other option lol.

Hmm, never thought of that before… I guess they just put him as #2 since they heard he was Rayman's best friend and assumed he'd be right beside him in battle. Then when they realized the truth they didn't bother reordering the list :P

I played for exactly 5 minutes, realised it looked and played like ass, and realised I had better things to do, so I turned the emulator off.

Well, the manual says that when the pirates first invaded, he actually fought them with his rain dance, but we don't see any of that in the game.

Jesus Christ, I still remember watching the old Rayman DS trailer on ye olde RaymanZone. Passage of time is a scary thing.

Master wrote: Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:41 am To be fair, while broad strokes wise Stone & Fire and Rock & Lava are similar, I think Stone/Fire feels more...constructed and artificial in its design, focusing more on the fire side of things, whereas Rock/Lava seems more organic in its design, tending more towards earth.

I think if they were going for the classical elements they could've done more to keep the two more distinct, but I don't think the two Sanctuaries have quite as much of an overlap as you might think.
Oh don't get me wrong, The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire is 100% the fire one (it's in the name, despite the presence of "earthly" Plums mentioned by spiraldoor), and The Sanctuary of Rock and Lava (Le Sanctuaire de Terre et de Lave) is 100% the earth (terre) one. It's even there in the texture filenames for the latter, "temple_terre".

The problem is that they seem to have mixed up the masks and guardians. Umber is a stone colossus, which is very earthly, and the mask follows the same theme, while Foutch is literally a fire-throwing monster, and the mask looks burned and agonized. Also, Foutch is the inverse of Axel (the water guardian), and the third mask is the inverse of the first one (the water mask), which again links up with fire complementing water. (When I say the masks are inverses of each other, I refer to the colours, red versus green, and the giant toothy smile versus the giant toothy frown.)

Umm… :oops2: Maybe if we take this discussion any further we should move it to the Rayman 2 topic? :oops2:
Hahaha, digressions about the most random of minutae, what are we like huh?

Truth be told I was thinking more on the basis of level design, it hadn't even occurred to me that the masks themselves were also misaligned. Probably should see if RayMap has any insight on the mask names, perhaps they could give some insight on their elements?

Same for the guardians and those level elements, didn't really heed much thought to those, but you're right, those do seem to muddy the waters a bit on what relates to what element.

Heck, take the lava out of the sanctuary and replace it with swampy water and all those thorny vines, plums, and caterpillars would feel right at home, with Umber's chamber being more of a jungle ruin than a hot lava core.

Sanctuary of Earth and Soil to represent all the plant life the area is focused around perhaps?

That would still leave Fire and Stone to represent the magma filled Sanctuary, and then the mines of the Iron Mountains could be were the Air Sanctuary used to be (Sanctuary of Wind and Iron?) but the pirates destroyed it when they put their base there and rebuilt the dead Guardian with similar tech to what they used on Clark (Which would explain the weird '13' on the end of the Boss' name).

Interesting theory, but I'm afraid I just can't accept Grolem 13 as being anything other than a misguided creation of the overly-ambitious Rayman Revolution team. The fact that he's shaped like Axel and Foutch makes no sense because those guys are conjugates of each other (water and fire) whereas the hypothetical air guardian should somehow be more similar to Umber. Off the top of my head, perhaps a wind monster who blows Rayman towards his goal but he needs to think fast to avoid falling into the abyss (like he has to think fast to avoid going under the lava with Umber). Of course, we actually sorta have that in Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava, so… :?

Anyway, Polokus says after Rayman brings him the air mask that he in fact has no power in the air. So that explains why there's no sanctuary – either he never built one, or it was too easy to destroy because of the aforementioned lack of power.

BEST BOSS EVAR!

Seriously - he flies towards Rayman in a 2D space, and has black spots.

Haha, at the risk of being shamed, I will admit I do unironically consider Grolem to be the most fun of the Guardian fights, even if it is fairly basic.

I'm with PluM on this one! Though I'd probably say that the Revolution team was actually not ambitious enough, since they only reused and mixed existing levels instead of creating the missing sanctuary from scratch, and well, simply recycled an existing guardian for Grolem 13. So much wasted potential in this version!

According to Florent Sacré, they were ambitious but most of the team lacked the experience to pull it off. (It's amusing that when I search my post history I find that I paraphrased page 57 of l'Histoire de Rayman in two entirely unrelated posts, one in 2018 and the other in 2022 )

So that would explain why they stopped in the middle of so many things, and why Revolution often feels like a botched attempt at a remake, despite interesting ideas there and there.

Random question for folks who've played the N64/DS versions cause I noted a difference in Rayman 3D, but I just recently saw some footage of DS and now I want to be sure of the detail. Does the pause menu in the N64 or DS versions play the Main Menu theme?

It does in Rayman 3D which I found interesting as it's the only version I'd played (and I've played PS1, PC, PS2 & Dreamcast to completion at this point) that did this. I would've thought the N64/DS version would have had a silent pause menu as in the PC version, but I'm asking to be sure cause I did make note of this fact on RayWiki with the observation that this was the only version that did so. I'd need to correct if I was wrong.

I'm finally getting around to playing Revolution and...

The camera sucks so much.

Why didn't they map it to the right stick?

I'm slowly making a list of minor gripes that are piling up against the game...
