Hugo wrote: Wed Jun 12, 2024 5:50 pm First let me say I'm bowled over by your knowledge of Rayman history, but maybe that's to be expected from an admin of PC! It also surprises me how seriously they took cultural sensitivity back then, since there are many examples of no care towards localization from those days. Maybe they took it seriously because it's hard to break into such an unfamiliar market.
To be fair, many are much more knowledgeable than me in the community, as I'm always reminded when playing the Teensies' Quiz. :oops2: But you're right, this extra effort is unique to the Japanese market, making its localizations all the more interesting.
Hugo wrote: Wed Jun 12, 2024 5:50 pm To be honest, it makes more sense to me to archive information about the JP localization history in English (indeed I found a few facts there myself) because Japanese gamers may simply not find it at all.

Firstly, Japan does have its own wiki fan sites format which is a kind of wiki/blog hybrid. This one here for example neatly summarizes core info about the game, goes on to make a subjective breakdown including "pros and cons", and ends with some trivia.

https://w.atwiki.jp/gcmatome/pages/8213 ... d_db4f9282

But the reason I am concerned they wouldn't find it is I have a sneaking suspicion the SEO optimization will favour those sites if say they looked up something about Rayman. Perhaps if Japanese streamers play Rayman, more people will catch on? I feel that the people have to come first and the "culture" follows, as it was with PC.
Those are good points, thanks for the insights. It is true that there do not appear to be many Japanese fan wikis, even for popular local franchises. They have a big Wikipedia though.

Anyway, documenting the foreign localizations in English should indeed be our priority, and it is a prerequisite for extensively documenting the series in other languages anyway. This may prove challenging, as older games handle non-Latin scripts in ways that make their extraction rather complicated, but we'll see how this goes. :hap:

Hi there! I'm Poxy, I'm a Mawpaw.
I've been casually browsing these forums as a guest since around 2010, and I think I even submitted a score to Raymanzone earlier than that.

Rayman 1 is the first video game I ever played, the whole series inspired me to spend my life studying to become an artist and game developer.
When I was little, I used to fill school notebooks with drawings of what I thought Rayman 4 was going to look like, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one.
I always hoped one day I'd get to work at Ubisoft on a new Rayman game, but the industry has not been so kind to me or our limbless friend.
Somewhere along the way I felt like I lost my purpose. But after seeing everyone's hard work in the Rayman Alive showcase last year, I was inspired again.
Lately I've been working on making a fan game in the Rayman universe, and I feel like I've rediscovered my meaning as an artist.
I look forward to posting more as it comes along.

I'm also very interested in weird and obscure creatures from the Rayman universe, mysterious structures and elaborate background elements, as well as small details and quirks about the mechanics and design of the games.

And in general I'm happy to see other people who understand and appreciate the Rayman series. I hope I can make something people want to play!

Hi Poxy!

Welcome to PC, sounds like you need no introduction. I only discovered this place recently :oops2:
Now I wish we had a real-world fairy council to meet up. But I guess it's "pirate" community so maybe it should be a ship...

That's so cool! Are you working on your fan game by yourself, or as the artist in a team?
In any case, looking forward to seeing any WIPs you have on the go!

Thank you!
I'm doing my own art, design, code, and music.
So far I've had several friends test the controls, one of them will probably help with level design and backend engine stuff.
Otherwise, it's just me and my passion project.

Yep! Olympia is the main character
It started out as a game about Rayman, but I always play her in Legends, and the character descriptions made me think of a story I wanted to tell. So I decided to show her some love.
Also I made her limbless for both animation style and gameplay reasons

It's great to have you here Poxy. I began with Rayman 2, and I loved it and still do. I'm grown but, it's still awesome. I also am still waiting for Rayman 4 in my heart. I have heard of a Rayman show that I have yet to watch though, but I might give it some time at some point.
