Re: Rayman Redemption

Post by Mortamon Saturn »

The game is going to be sold on Steam like Scoop Kick was, so yeah, can't be a Rayman game or else Ubisoft would nuke Ryemanni...
Ryemanni has said quite a few times he wouldn't make more Rayman games aside from shitpost ones, which to me is understandable considering he dedicated about a decade of work to fangames on this single franchise. Since Scoop Kick, he seems committed to be a full-on indie dev, making and selling his own productions.

Even as a Rayman fanatist who could make a religious cult out of Rayman 1 (HAIL THE HOLY PLUM-), I'd rather see Ryemanni do more of his own thing at this point, while getting paid for his effort at the same time! :mryellow:

I second everything Master said, I'll add this game is also distinct enough (and blends elements from other games like Plok and Dynamite Headdy from what I understand), it's not a straight-up Rayman copy-paste with a different coat of paint.
I personally can't think of many spiritual successors which are cashgrabs or cheap copycats, especially nowadays when many people are doing such successors as an official love letter to a franchise which cannot get new (legal) sequels/got ruined by corporate greed. War for the Overworld is an example which always comes to my mind, being the Dungeon Keeper sequel we never got because of EA, while bringing a few of its own fresh ideas.
In itself, the Rayman franchise burrows a lot from other platformers sometimes (even more so nowadays in the case of the UbiArt series), and some game genres are pretty much spiritual successors to specific games (remember when First-Person Shooters used to be called "Doom-like", which itself is Wolfenstein 3D's spiritual child?).
A few of my own ideas as a writer started as what could be best described as "fanfics", but then evolved into far greater original projects where I could break out of fanworks' usual creative restrictions while still showing love for something which captivated my very dreams.

But to each their own views, just my little perspective on this topic. I don't even fully disagree because a full-on Rayman game would always be more appealing to me as an experience, and some spiritual successors do miss some of the originals' flavor especially when it comes to their universe.

Though, I do wonder if we could actually get Ubi to work with the fans to make an official Rayman product, similarly to Sonic Mania...
They recently contacted the HotA team to add their Cove faction in Horn of the Abyss as an expansion to the Heroes of Might and Magic board game
, and it's now under production since they granted their permission (although it remains non-profit for the modder team)...
Redemption expansion for the Rayman board game incoming? :hap:

Re: Rayman Redemption

Post by Mortamon Saturn »

Hello there, Ryemanni has just played a corrupted version of Rayman Redemption for the game's anniversary this year.
This was a messed-up build which he thought he did for version 1.0.0 before the original final release, but it turns out it was a version for the beta testers (specifically Peppermint Bubble who did the cover art, for this one)...
And even to Ryemanni's surprise, it contains what appears to be more early versions of some music tracks! The Musician's Song and Brain Games sounded very different just before release!
Which is great, because Ryemanni had lost most of his old work when upgrading his PC, so he can salvage some content from this build... Though, Ryemanni has said he most likely won't share it. Who knows, maybe the Game Jolt OST could be expanded later with the additional early tracks like what happened in 2023 with RDMRT's stereo soundtrack, at least...

The corrupted beta has TONS of funny issues, with 99% of the sprites being used incorrectly all over the game, some weird behaviour changes like Hunters shooting way faster, or the Tentacle Flower beind literally dead on arrival (and replaced by the sprites of the cancelled Woodbot boss which were removed in later updates!). Even crashes, and Ryemanni had to remove the Moskito boss background with UndertaleModTool to make it possible to see most bosses!
Also, very cool accidental effects like the falling snow looking like falling stars or Darker Mr Dark unleashing a massive storm of hands and shooting huge flames instead of lightning to attack!
...Or very "bad" ones like Stone Men Stone Heads enemies having... hum... "Magma heads" in a very inappropriate spot, and they also "conveniently" happen to be first encountered in the level "The Hard CRocks" :hap:

By the way, I'm currently in the process of expanding most of the Redemption/ReDesigner related Wiki articles on Rayfanpedia (mainly the bosses for now), so come take a look and contribute if you can! :mryellow:

So, he basically implemented Glitch City into the game? :hap:

Ryemanni has made his own creepypasta glitched game by accident

However, still no news of these lost beta tracks, unfortunately...

On a side note, I've completed the skins and cheats articles on Rayfanpedia, so now you got clean and efficient lists for these!
https://fan.raymanpc.com/wiki/Skin#In_Rayman_Redemption
https://fan.raymanpc.com/wiki/List_of_c ... Redemption
Of course, details like unlock requirements are included!
You have no idea how much of a pain it was to reconstruct all the skins piece by piece as there aren't complete versions of them in the data.win... :'(

This is great job, and yes, I have no idea of the pain. Thank you so much for doing the hard work! 💪

Maybe I'll get some time to work on the wiki again soon, but things are pretty hectic here at the moment. 🤪

Thanks! It's always quite a task to deal with those sprites, though thankfully there a few that are already preassembled for some characters/enemies (those with "editor" in their file name), so it'll be easier to deal with some Redemption/ReDesigner articles later.
It's crazy that I'm still not done with the True Boss Rush content even after so many months! :oops2:

And don't worry, there's no rush or obligation! Personally, I mostly do it for fun when I have the time!

Great job! 👏

Slightly related question, is there a way to extract the maps from the game, like it was done for the original version?

Well, until someone really gets to work on it, there's no Ray1Map equivalent for Redemption and other fangames...
So, the best you can do for now is to use some software like UndertaleModTool to look at the maps through the data.win file (in the "Rooms" section), and you can even toggle on the collisions... but even then, it's not perfect compared to the maps we have for the original games. :?
Capture d’écran (109112).png
You can also save them as PNGs.
I guess they could be temporary placeholders for Rayfanpedia until we come up with something better, but I really don't like how they look due to the visible grid that can't seem to be toggleable...
For exemple, here's the tile test map of Redemption (which isn't available in-game):
TestTilemap.png
On a side note, I like how Ryemanni included a test for the Tings that sound like Au Clair de la Lune ! :mryellow:
...Or, "AU CLE DE LA LUNE" here. :noel:

EDIT: Great news for anyone who wanted to play Rayman Redemption's old public versions!
All of them have been uploaded on the Internet Archive, including most of their patch equivalents and the Gameplay Demo
(albeit the latter is only in version 1.0.1)!
https://archive.org/details/rayman-rede ... es-archive
You can now enjoy all the tiny things that were changed over the updates, including some of the removed sprites in the data.win file like the cancelled Woodbot boss! So speaking of glitches like in the corrupted version, we can now try them all out!
:noel:

Same goes for *all* the old versions for Rayman ReDesigner, and Return to The Spooky Raymansion's first release!

Hi, during cleanup I noticed I still got like nearly 3 huge boxes full of physical Rayman Redemption copies. They look like this:

They might be still way more than 200 copies in total. I am trying to give these away, should anyone here want to take them over hit me up in the dms!

Unfortunately, Raymanni (now "Ryemanni") hasn't been active here for years. You'd have more chance telling him anything from his social networks.

Anyway, Rayman AFG really looked like an interesting game, I remember giving it a try many years ago and I really liked it!

Alright, send every single one of them to me so I may build the ultimate Rayman RedempTemple! :noel:

(In all seriousness, I assume doing the shipping to France would be too much of a complicated procedure, so I'd rather not bother... I'm lazy right now. :oops2: )

Isn't that what Rayfanpedia already is for like ~90% of its content because of me making too many articles about it? :hap:

And speaking of that, I'm currently in the process of adding the fists to the skin article... Which made me realize something interesting!
There's an unused fist skin in both Redemption and ReDesigner! :!:
Image
Indeed, Space Rayman has a "Space" file for its fist (which is the same as classic but a bit more bluish)... but if you use the skin in either games and launch Rayman's fist, it will appear like the classic one no matter what. Probably an oversight which will never be fixed as Ryemanni has renounced to updating those games... :?

Capture d’écran (117979).png
Capture d’écran (117975).png
Capture d’écran (117977).png
(Look closely. Of course, I've made sure the Redemption skin effects are activated. I also experimented with all other skins, and none of them use the Space one either... I'll check the gold variations later too.)

I also realized that the Dark Magician Rayman skin uses the Paint/Rainbow Fist's file, although it's just the texture without the rainbow effects usually layered on top of the power-up. Pretty creative way of using fewer assets! :hehe:

Hello everyone!

I just thought I might as well find this thread and say thank you for this amazing game!

These past few days I was looking forward to booting up some of the original Rayman games and replay them (to be fair, I really wanted to play Rayman 3 but ended up deciding the right thing to do was play all the main games in order :oops2: ). I had already bought R2 and R3 on GOG, so I bought a copy of Rayman Forever. However, when I started the game it was definitely not the experience I remembered from PS1. The game looked terribly pixelated and would not adapt to my 1920x1080 screen, I couldn't get it to work with my PS4 controller properly, Moskito was pink in this version (huge fixation of mine) and the ting sound... Honestly, it just felt like I had downloaded a cheap illegal copy and was emulating it. Admittedly, the GOG copy runs on DOSBox, but still... ìt was something I had paid for!

I binged on a few Rayman 1 reviews on YouTube while I was at it and most of them emphasised how poorly its difficulty had aged, how unfair the game was and how excrucianting the whole life and continue system felt. Several ones, however, recommended playing Rayman Redemption instead and labeled it was the best way to enjoy R1 today.

At first I was reluctant to play a fangame, as I am somewhat of a purist and I feared it would just be an easy-peasy, watered down version of the original with some extra content that would not be canon anyway. But man, I finally gave it a try and I am so glad I did!

I am just past Bongo Hills, and all the changes make a huge difference! The controls feel as slick and satisfying as ever, and having all the powers from the beginning feels like it should have been the norm. Being able to use you helicopter as much as you want does not take away from the experience, it just makes it feel so much better! And the detail of having skins, the extra dialogs, Moskito having his right, sexy colors; being able to choose by yourself what sound effects you want and easily customise the controls and how Rayman's actions work, the way it detects my PS4 controller and perfectly mimics the controls of the PS1 version...

Sorry, long post, but I am simply in awe. Thank you very much for creating the exact experience that I wanted from Rayman 1. I will forever recommend this to anyone thinking of playing the original Rayman.

Hehe thank you! That is definitely a very small fan game compared to Redemption.
I added a few screenshots and details about the game.

I left this critical review 3 years ago on the game, I'll drop it here:

Fantastic game. Been a Rayman addict since 2000 yet never managed to beat the game, unlike Redemption which I've just finished. So here is my critique for things that should be easily fixable:

1. Playtopia: as much as I enjoyed this world, its artstyle sticks out like a sore thumb. Rayman's original worlds are based on nuanced palettes. This one is an RGB mess, especially the multicoloured blocks, the lego background and the eyesore-worthy turquoise bathroom tile/puzzle piece background. A simple fix could be sticking to a single palette for each level (and better backgrounds).

2. Minified Rayman: why not use the original sprites? Using quarter pixels looks very out of place. Should be an easy fix given the original game's sprites.

3. Rotated pixel art looks, again, very out of place. Just keep Rayman's fist horizontal, and the stonemen's body parts as well.

4. The places where the flying rings, springs, and vertical creatures get liberated: serious epilepsy warning. Instead of spawning 50 of them per second, just keep it down to 3 or 4.

5. Tarayzan level: the water stays at ground level and doesn't rise. Breaks the level's gameplay.

6. Some dialogs should be skipped after respawn. For example, the jack-in-the-box that hands you the first key, or the ice cream cart clown.

7. Flying ring physics: great work recreating them, but they are way stiffer than the original's, which takes a lot of fun out of them.

8. Life trophies respawning after death in Classic mode: might have made the game too... easy. Maybe only make them respawn on level entry.

9. The story is completely undermined by the changes. The character development (a pillar of story writing) of Rayman got voided by granting all powers from the start. This also delegates Betilla to a background character who grants nothing more than health. Missing from the game is also her capture by Mister Dark.

Now don't get me wrong, the game is absolutely amazing and a masterpiece, but these suggestions should help making it even better.

I think the lower quality of the new assets and the degraded physics of the flying rings and super helicopter have been mentioned a lot in the past, but I must also echo what you said about Rayman's sprite in his miniature form. While only a small detail, I also thought it felt out of place.

Hey guys :) Remember he made it for free.
While many points can be true, making a huge fan game at this pro level takes countless hours, all volunteer work. He didn't get a penny for that. Just to entertain us for free. To me, the Playtopia art style was the weirdest part (music also, aren't on the same level), but still very impressed by the level design.
I'm not trying to forbid anyone from critcizing, but wow, I find it difficult to criticize a free game like this.
I may say that because I'm a dev too  I know the ins and outs, the pain behind it
