Exactly this. The Nintendo Famicom was released on the 15th of July 1983 in Japan, while the Nintendo Entertainment System was first released on the 18th of October 1985 in America, only later being released on the 1st of September 1986 in Europe.

It's actually interesting how far apart the world used to be back then, only releasing consoles years later, yet without internet, we didn't even know that Japan were enjoying the Famicom since 1983.
