<'s laptop fans sound like a jet starting the engine when < has lots of programs/browser tabs open. It's always been like that since < bought it eight months ago. But from <'s experience with other laptopts, if they don't make any sound, that's bad (laptop's probably dead)

Now < is reminded of a paragraph in one of the Haynes books about computers, explaining the origin of dual-core CPUs. They were talking about how the chip designers realized that if they kept on increasing the speeds of single-core chips, the next generation would generate so much heat that within an hour of turning on your computer it would have burned its way halfway to the centre of the earth (paraphrasing)

< has a Legion 5, and if < plays a game on it, it can get fairly loud for real. <'s glad that it doesn't start whistling, drilling, or growing legs and dancing around the table.
