The full answer is that RECS was a system where you could define the general parameters of the track (type, length, curves, obstacles...) using a GUI, which would translate into a 9-character code + 2 digits for difficulty. This would get fed into a pseudo-random generator, and that would generate the actual track.

That’s fascinating how early technical limitations brought such creativity. I guess that’s also one of the earliest attempts at procedural level generation.

Shatterhand is correct! The Japanese version, known as Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain was developed around the same time, and there are minor differences between the two.

I'm going to put aside the question begging to be asked... how come it took you 3 guesses to think of this game, when the α and β symbols are a straight giveaway...

I first encountered Solbrain in a broken bootleg I played on my friends counterfeit NES clone in the nineties. I recall that only two stages worked, but I feel in love in the mechanics and the music. Years later I found a NES ROM, and actually played it through on an emulator!
