I’d recommend asking dorklore for advice considering how obsessed she is with the first king

Ah one of the last of the Intel Airs huh? Yeah I can't say I wouldn't blame you for wanting an upgrade. I might be wrong on this, but don't the newest Airs run with passive cooling only at this point? I'll have to look it up.
EdgeRabbit wrote: Sun Oct 20, 2024 7:24 pm Oh i should list what im gonna use it for:

-School
-Art
-gaming
Now for the first two, I reckon you could probably use a MacBook without issue, but games has always been a bit iffy with Macs, especially since the ARM transition since it's not as easy to run Windows on it...and even if you did Windows gaming on ARM is pretty iffy. I think gaming is probably gonna lock you to a Windows machine.

Yeah, indeed the last of the Intel Air series. Though I might splurge on the base Pro model since I tend to do tasks requiring performance and the Airs would likely throttle due to being fanless.

Good point, wonder how much refurb M1 models go for these days? They've been out for a while, but from what I've been hearing they're still pretty useable even now. Or would you jump to a modern M3 (or possibly M4 by the time you get to it) system?

Oof, 2017 was probably the worst year to be a MacBook. My friend bought a Pro then, and even it struggles to function now... those massive heating issues. Meanwhile I still use my early-2013 15" Pro for all of my music production and it runs flawlessly, even with 40+ tracks in Logic, each running some beefy Kontakt library.

It's not urgent right now, but I've been thinking about upgrading, just since it has a few issues like the battery being basically nonexistent... even when plugged in, it slowly drains when I'm doing intense work, and I have to take breaks every 4-ish hours to let it charge back up. There's also an issue when I move it more than very gently where the display disconnects and everything goes black for like 3 seconds. Also I can't upgrade past Catalina, which means I can't screenshare audio on Discord, which is a massive problem when I'm doing work for someone and I want them to be able to hear what I'm doing live.

I was looking at the prices of the new Pros and almost spat out my drink, they're just preposterous :hap: Apple products are more of an elite club than ever before

So I'm looking at Airs... does anyone think, for what I do, the latest 15" model would be satisfying replacement for my (at the time) specced-out early-2013 Pro? I have a hard time understanding how something 11 years its senior wouldn't vastly outperform it, but I think I'm reasonably skeptical at this point.
