Obscure mechanics from the series

Post by poxy-mawpaw »

This is a topic for game mechanics in Rayman that are obscure, or otherwise less likely to be noticed by the average player.
This could be anything from useful tricks speedrunners have found, to pointless aesthetic choices that follows logic you wouldn't normally think about.
Originally I just had a question about Rayman 3, but I didn't see a thread for this topic when searching, so I figured I'd make one and keep the scope broad to encompass all the games.

The first question to start off is about the onomatopoeia text that appears when you hit an enemy in Rayman 3, the text that says things like "GRAA" and "KOPN"
From playing around with it, I've noticed there's a logic to when you see which text.
Here's what I figured out so far:
  • Uncharged fist - GRAA
  • Lightly charged fist - KOPN
  • Fully charged fist - LEUU!!
  • Stepping on shrunken enemy - NUHU
  • Stepping on enemy with Hoodstomper, or kill enemy with shock rocket - JNii
I'm sure there's other situations that trigger these, but this is what I was able to figure out from playing around with it.
Does anybody know if there are more words that pop up, or is this the full list?
Additionally, does anyone who speaks French know if any of these resemble French words or other onomatopoeia, or are they completely made up?

And if you know any obscure or lesser known micro-mechanics like this, I'm interested to hear what you find!

Theres this one trick to go extremely fast in RO, but breakboosting is way easier. Still probably worth it to put it in here.

Thank you for sharing this! I've actually been playing around with it since you posted, doing all the time trial electoons on my current save.

Just in case the video gets taken down, here's the steps I've been using to get it pretty consistently:
  1. Face the direction you want to go
  2. Hold the run button first, keep it held
  3. Move forward and punch at the same time (moving forward is required, it doesn't work if you only punch)
  4. Wait 0.1 of a second (not sure if that's exact. It's not immediate, but you do have to do it pretty fast after punching forward)
  5. Turn around and duck as quickly as you can, keep ducking
  6. You can let go of run at this point, but I keep it held in case I need to transition into running
It's kinda tricky, but it can be done consistently with some practice.
So far what I've noticed:
  • It's definitely faster than just running and sliding normally, at least in the right conditions
  • The trick works fine on flat surfaces or downward slopes
  • Upward slopes immediately kill the momentum
  • I swear I got it going fast enough a few times to either clip through enemies, or slide underneath their collision. I'm having trouble getting it to happen again
  • Bouncing on enemies keeps the momentum
  • It's not very useful if there's uneven ground, too many obstacles, bounce plants, or wall jumping involved
  • You can't attack mid slide
  • Many level gimmicks and running sequences are paced in a way that you can't go this fast without dying

Wow, I thought this text was randomized whenever I defeated an enemy. That’s pretty fascinating.

I thought you were about to stay that the GRAA and KOPN stood for something :oops2: anyway, I haven’t seen a lot of these texts because I haven’t used those
