I'm really excited about this! Well, I'm actually trying to be cautious and not to get my hopes up, because Ubisoft is, well... Let's just say unreliable about game releases. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment if it gets cancelled.

I watched someone on YouTube (I think Ryemanni?) saying that this new remake will probably end up leading to Rayman 4 and, mam, that would be a dream come true.

Well, I don’t think they’d scrap it at this stage, and even if they did then that’s probably turn into something else

I've seen a lot of people focus too much on the negative (like on twitter), it's a good thing to worry because it shows how much Rayman is appreciated, but it's been over 10 years since Rayman had the spotlight for him alone, not a cameo, not a dlc, this time it's just him, I'm just happy that the series is getting a comeback :proud:

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT RAYMAN'S RETURN:

- Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan recently began an exploratory process for a new chapter in the Rayman saga;
- According to Tom Henderson, the project is a “Rayman Remake.”
- Also reported by Henderson, Ancel has been called back as a consultant to maintain the continuity of the video game universe;
- The project is called “Project Steambot,” which can mean many things: Steamboat Willie, or the first appearance of Mickey Mouse and thus a remake of the first Rayman, or SteamBot, Steam Robot, thus a remake of Rayman 2;
- Brazil, a well-known Nintendo leaker with an incredible record, confirmed that the game will be in 3D and will also be released on Switch 1;
-PHBrazil states that in addition to the new game there is a remastered Rayman 3 coming out on Switch in 2025.

Have I forgotten something?
Please let me know.

To clarify: we don't know whether the new game (or remake) will be 2D or 3D, or what platforms it will release on. That first bit of info from Brazil was also about the (probably) upcoming Rayman 3 remaster.

Meh I'm not that excited about a Rayman 3 port. Why not remake it as well? Unless they mean a remaster like when they were calling the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy a remaster...

The amount of rage I will have if it is a switch exclusive will be fucking unreal. Imagine waiting years for a new rayman game just for it to come to an intolerable piece of plastic that can hardly run a fucking calculator.

R1 would be a logical place to start, and Michel Ancel already went "back to roots" in some sense with Origins and Legends. But R1 doesn't need a remake visually-speaking, and Rayman Redemption fixes its issues (from what I've heard).

R2 would be a great choice, but like pretty much every other game from the 90s, it would just rob the essence of it completely. Crash, Spyro, Final Fantasy... they're all "fine" but have none of that character only raw creativity can produce. This is actually why the best part of FF7 Remake is its battle mode that innovates and takes a new direction. The story is an awkward battle between their inability to reproduce what makes the original impactful and their desire for creative freedom.

If Ubi wants to test the waters with the Rayman IP, they should make something new, but small. Unambitious, authentic, fun. Reduce risk of damaging the IP, keep the focus on a good experience. It would be something new to build on. This approach, rather than bringing back the dead, would make me optimistic about Rayman's future.

I fully agree (even if I adore the Crash N. Sane Trilogy as a longtime fan of the originals). I will most certainly buy any Rayman remake that they release, if nothing else then just to try it for myself. But, truth be told, I don't think any Rayman game needs a remake right now.

I'd been thinking that Rayman 1 desperately needed a remake, because it felt like the most outdated in terms of difficulty and lives system and the most forgotten in terms of story and lore for the franchise. Also RO already created an artstyle that was perfect for 2D platformers. However, thinking about it now, I do think that the UbiArt artsyle wouldn't suit R1 and Rayman Redemption is already the perfect remake for R1. Anything that Ubisoft could put out will most probably pale in comparison, which would be a terrible fail. Furthermore, Rayman 1 is not designed for the gameplay style and overall pacing of Rayman Origins. If they wanted to make something that speedy, they would be better off making a new game.

Then, it's between Rayman 2 and 3. I do NOT think any of those needs a remake, because they both hold up extremely well. But between the two, I would rather see Rayman 2 get a remake that refurbishes the visual aspect for a whole new generation that will get to experience (arguably) the most iconic and popular entry in the series. I would accept new custscenes and story bits added to the game to make it feel like a fuller experience and to show more of Rayman's personality to make it more consistent witht he other entries, but I would not want them to change the game too much. The beauty of R2 is that the game can be quaint and cartoony, but without it ever taking away from the overall gloomy tone of the story. Rayman has to be reasonably serious for that.

I think there would be an opportunity to expand on the lore of Rayman 2, but the air of mystery around that game is also what gave it its charm, so I don't know if it would be such a great idea. Given what a failure of a remake Rayman Revolution was, I'm also a little bit scared of what could happen.

Rayman 2 is in need of a remake IMO, one that would expand on the lore indeed but also make it a definitive edition. Revolution, which was already supposed to be that, lacks stuff like Ninjaws and one phase of the Razorbeard fight.

R1 could also be streamlined a bit. A game that you have to 100% to complete is not exactly a 2024-way to make a game. Redemption does it incredibly well, but since it's not official there's leeway for Ubisoft to implement their vision... One that I don't exactly welcome to be honest. Rayman 1's look is still unique and hasn't aged poorly the way R2 models did. I'm not sure I'd welcome a redesign that would make R1 more akin to Origins or Legends.

If it's a remake of Rayman 2 I would like a lot of explanations while remaining mysterious, knowing a little more about Polokus, the pirates but without breaking the magical side, it's quite contradictory but that's what I want, the Rayman universe has very good lore potential and I NEED it to be exploited

The thing is, there's also a fan remake of Rayman 2 going on: https://newdawn.games/rayman-2/ :hap: I guess Ubi might get it done faster, but do we really trust them more than the fans? :mefiant:

Like the Beyond Good and Evil remaster, Rayman 3 is new enough and looks good enough that Ubisoft can just give it a fresh coat of paint and resell it. Rayman 2 on the other hand looks very dated and needs more of an overhaul.

Much as I'm not keen on the idea, it would fit precedent considering BG&E also had a HD port before it had the remaster. Rayman 3's already had a HD port and its initial release was around the same time so the remaster route again would make sense.

I'm not 100% sure how I'd feel about that. Rayman 3 does look fairly decent and overhauled lighting and textures probably would do the job, but I'd like something a little more comprehensive.

They did add some extra quests to the BG&E remaster… Rayman 3 is way more linear though so I'm not sure how they'd manage that… Maybe restoring some of the missing secret rooms that have been speculated to exist? :hap:

It’d be easy money, and it’s not playable on modern systems

That's not quite true. Rayman 3 is still playable on PC through GoG, and Rayman 3 HD is playable on the Xbox Series X and S thanks to the 360 version being made backwards compatible, you can still buy R3HD on the Xbox Store in fact. That leaves the PS5 and Switch unaccounted for, which yeah, honestly is still a pretty large potential install base to chase after.
