Re: Movies you just recently watched
Kubrick is kinda weird for me. I've seen all his movies at least a few times, and by all means I'd call him one of my favourite directors, but there's also something so... weird about some of his takes on traditional genres. Full Metal Jacket (war) and The Shining (horror) are two classics that I just don't really enjoy a ton, they feel kind of awkward and lacking in substance. That's actually one of Kubrick's strengths imo when he does his more original and bizarre films, but when they're also trying to be "normal" movies, idk, I'm not a huge fan. He's an amazing cinematographer though.lyndo64 wrote: Mon Oct 21, 2024 6:10 am Just watched Full Metal Jacket, holy s#1t dude, what a movie.
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favourite movies of all time, because he's just doing whatever he wants there, and it's beautiful, there's literally nothing else like it. A Clockwork Orange I also really like, though it is very disturbing, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. But its stylised visuals, aesthetic, atmosphere and music are so top tier, and the story is really good.
I think I just much prefer his earlier work... anything past the 70's is kind of a pass for me. I feel like I'm alone in that opinion.
Re: Movies you just recently watched
I watched Dave (1993) and The Cutting Edge (1992). The first is about a guy who looks like the US President and whom the secret service hires to pretend to be the President after the real one goes into coma. The second is about a male hockey player that can no longer play professionally following an injury, and a female figure skater who keeps rejecting all her dance partners, teaming up to perform.
Both are movies are cute mixtures of comedy, light drama and a bit of romance.

Fair enough, even though I heavily disagree, I can still respect your opinion.

I’m currently watching deadpool. It’s really funny, but maybe not the best to watch with your parents (my bad, oops!
)
Re: Movies you just recently watched
Just watched the entire Tom Hardy "Venom" trilogy - the first two online, the last one in the theater yesterday. It's funny, entertaining, low-complexity mindless fun.

I think they’re amazing as well! Which one was your favourite?dr_st wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 9:45 am Just watched the entire Tom Hardy "Venom" trilogy - the first two online, the last one in the theater yesterday. It's funny, entertaining, low-complexity mindless fun.
Is that where you got your name from?
Anyway, yesterday, I finished watching deadpool. I might start watching the second one today
Re: Movies you just recently watched
TBH, I liked them each for what they are. Even the second one which is considered hte weakest by many (and it is shorter too). The third one was quite impressive, but I felt they went a tad overboard, and some points in the plot were incoherent. The first one is probably the best.Greengoop wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2024 7:44 amI think they’re amazing as well! To be honest I now agree with that. The third one didn’t particularly give off the calm vibe the others had, although I did think the second was quite good in terms of story/action

Re: Movies you just recently watched
The last movie I ever watched was Coraline.
A remastered and 3D version was available at the cinema for a very short period because it was the movie's anniversary, for some reason at the cinema I went to watch it it wasn't available in 3D but it was nice to watch the movie in the big screen in higher quality
Also, it was the first time I went to watch a movie at the cinema alone and I liked the experience, I should do it more often!
This anniversary version also included a teaser of the next Laika stop-motion movie and after the movie credits there was an extra where they explained how over time they evolved their way of making puppets for their movies thanks to their new technologies and it was interesting to see

I watched Hundreds of Beavers yesterday, it was great, loved the DIY live action Looney Tunes vibe to it.
I also watched Whiplash today, it was really good! What an original and unique opinion!

Finished watching Deadpool 2, I’m gonna watch Deadpool Vs Wolverine now it’s out on Disney+
Re: Movies you just recently watched
Coming home from the theater. Just watched Moana 2. It's good, but not spectacular. Fun times, as expected for a Disney superproduction.

I know you say its good, but HOW good is it? I wanna see it, but I'm skeptical considering Disney hasn't made a good movie in a LONG time.Pirez wrote: Wed Nov 27, 2024 3:39 pm Coming home from the theater. Just watched Moana 2. Re: Movies you just recently watched
I won't share my youtube video on the topic because it's in french, so here's the gist of it.
Moana 2 is safe. Per usual for a Disney animated movie, it's gorgeous. It's lightheaded and very pleasant to sit through. However, it does not go, in my opinion, deep enough in its ideas and themes to be fully striking. The modern song do not appeal to me (except for the last one which truly lift the scene it's in) because they're almost always structured like Tiktoks and I'm a old grouch, but they get the job done.
So my recommendation is lukewarm. It won't rock your socks off, but it's decent to good.
I, for one, wouldn't call any of the late Disney movies bad. I may have a few weeks ago for all those safe, bankable movies that do not venture out of the dotted line, but ever since I had the misfortune of seeing Wish, I have a point of reference for truly bad Disney in the modern time. Funny enough, while I have it in contention for being the worst one ever, it's still not my most disliked, but the one I dislike the most is a far better movie.

Maybe I will go see it then. Just to say I did. Not expecting much though. The fact you said it was structed like Tiktoks is extremely funny, but also lowers my expectations even more... but I didn't really have any in the first place anyways..Pirez wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2024 8:24 pm Moana 2 is safe. Disney movies are always gorgeous but it seems like they factor that more than making... a good movie? I feel like they think that when people see how good it is, they'll start salivating and saying 'THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!"... But that's just my opinion. I can't really critique it until I've seen it.

I didn't even realize that there was a Moana 2 until yesterday
(coincidentally I saw it mentioned somewhere else just before I read Pirez' post...)

If you have a significant other I'd say it'll be a cute afternoon.WPTheModder wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2024 9:03 pm

That is something that striked me the first time I've seen Encanto : there's always one that'll go full tiktok with silly dances from the characters, but the other ones also feature discontinuous shots that jump in and out of the supposed action. It's structure like a modern pop clip that might (and will) be featured in the Disney hot 100, along with the music being constructed as a pop song rather than a song that fits the theme.WPTheModder wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2024 9:03 pmThe fact you said it was structed like Tiktoks is extremely funny, but also lowers my expectations even more... but I didn't really have any in the first place anyways..
There were songs with discontinuous shots in the gold era of Disney animation, namely Friend Like Me (which is in line with the character of the genie throughout the whole movie), but they were usually limited to one and on top of that the music was more in line with themes (like I Would Like to Be King).
However, I wouldn't say this structural change isn't a bad choice, it's just a different choice that I personally do not like. I'm sure kids growing up with Moana and Frozen and Encanto will love it. I would only say it's a bad choice when the two styles are cramed into the same movie (looking at you, Aladdin remake. With classics just slightly remastered and then a full on pop song for Jasmine that completely changes pace and style)
