That's peak irony indeed, and it couldn't have landed further from its initial goal!
Master wrote: Mon Dec 11, 2023 10:38 pm Needless to say the lore in the series is a mess and we're all a bunch of sad nerds who care wayyy too much about it looking at how much the developers seem to xD
I don't know if that's the case for the mosquitoes, but I'm sure there's a truckload of questions that have been heavily debated by the community and yet the developers actually never gave them a thought. One the one hand, that's understandable when you consider that they were mostly experimenting and having fun like you said, but on the other hand, it's bound to happen for a game that sells millions and millions and copies, and yet it's something that developers often overlook!
PluMGMK wrote: Mon Dec 11, 2023 11:13 pm I mean, the juxtaposition of those two facts is pretty revealing, isn't it? Michel kept wanting to do "new" things, but when he took a backseat, the team decided to create something a lot closer to what went before.
That's probably why! Ancel's creativity is his greatest strength, but in the end his refusal to just try and rejuvenate a recipe that works was one the biggest factors in the series' demise.

As far as I remember the only thing linking R3 to Origins at all was the costume Rayman was wearing.
Master wrote: Mon Dec 11, 2023 11:31 pm Oh yeah, still is in dev hell too even now and there was a fair amount of drama a few years ago if memory serves. In fact wasn't the hell of BGE2s development what led to Rayman Origins being started, cause they wanted a break from it?

Either ways yeah, suddenly that little idea seems rather tragic...
Yes, BGE2 is in lingo. I'm not even sure if there was any mention of what happened to BGE2 when the remaster for the original of all things was announced awhile ago. Ubi sure has some strange priorities...

...And I guess we're going off-topic instead of talking about the worst version of Rayman 2, but Rayman GBC had Rayman 2 music and some other things from it, so it still counts as something relevant to this topic! :noel:
Thinking about this, the GBC version of Rayman 1 of all things has a more varied soundtrack than the GBC version of Rayman 2 as well. It's quite an 'eccentric' version considering it's a downgrade from how surprisingly decent Rayman 1 GBC was.

"Guys, we slapped Rayman on the title, so it's perfectly following the continuity!... Huh? A story? Lore and character consistency? What for?" :hap:

I certainly didn't see any, it's really one of those projects that are just cursed forever...
...Speaking of "Forever"...

I think Rayman 2 Forever did at least some small additions and changes to the returning music if I'm not mistaking, but often this resulted in making some tracks even shorter like the Rainy Forest's being reworked into the theme for the Fairy Glade (which removed the intro bit of that track).
It really feels like they were desperate for one last buck by using the Game Boy Color while it was reaching life support since the Game Boy was such a money printer. Don't know how well it sold, but considering how I don't see many people even remembering this game was a thing, I assume their plan didn't pan out so well...

So... we recently had an "extended weekend" due to a national holiday here, and I had spent the good part of it playing through the PlayStation version of Rayman 2, for the first time in my life.

Having completed it, I now believe that its reputation of "the worst version of Rayman 2" (when considering the mainline versions, at least), is somewhat justified.

It's not about the missing content; the alternative content is indeed quite interesting in places, and even though overall there is less of it, the total amount of content is still within the expectation for a full-length game.

It's not about the inferior technology (graphics or music) - as was already said - the quality is actually quite impressive given the technical limitations of in the inferior console.

It's not about the fact that the music didn't play for me in long sections or that the game freezes after the end credits, when trying to load the 2D bonus level. I attribute these problems to an issue with my emulator or a bad CD rip.

It's all about the controls, or more accurately - the combination of controls and physics.

As mentioned on the wiki - Rayman feels heavier in this version, and more sluggish. This is especially noticeable in all the segments which are not standard platforming. Shell riding, sliding, swimming - all feel very awkward, much less precise, and with a heavily delayed reaction, compared to the other versions I've tried (PC, DC and PS2 - all of which feel nearly identical).

In many of these sections - getting the lums while staying on track without crashing into something seems exceedingly difficult. I feel that I've had tons more failures (including multiple "Try again") playing through this now, than I've had during my first ever playthrough of the PC version, as an inexperienced teenager.

Somehow, the sections in "Beneath the Sanctuary" and "Prision Ship" where you fly with the super-helicopter, or the flying shell, seem less affected. They felt only mildly worse than on PC.

Remember when we brought up the early sequenced music that was included in Rayman 3D?...
Here it is. :hap:

Did I miss something ? There are Rayman 2's N64/DS music in Rayman 3D?

I would like to point out that I have not read all the answers to the topic, so I risk repeating things already said.

For me, the PC, DC and N64 version are all great.

I've never played the IOS version, so I can't tell.

The PS1 version is good for what it is, sure there is a lot of missing content, the physics are note the same, but it's still enjoyable. And we don't have to forget that thanks to this version, we have a playable version of the 2D prototype of Rayman 2.

I'm mixed on Rayman Revolution. The first time i've played it, i loved it, because I thought it was better : Better graphics, voice acting, more content, a hub world, etc... But after replaying it, I noticed all the problems with this version : Loading times, the game asking if you want to save everytime you enter a new area, some levels have been mixed with others, levels' musics are replaced with bad ambient sound effects when you enter an already completed level... I can continue like that for eternity. It's clearly a rushed remake of the game, rushed just to be released at time for the launch of the PS2. The only thing I like about this version is that the hub world give more interaction with other characters, and give more life to the world.

The GBC version... is a game that exist. For me, it's an official ROM hack of Rayman 1 GBC. The level design is not great, the illustrations are laughable, the final boss is the same henchman you fight 5 minutes prior, pretty much all ennemies are reskin of the antitoons. The musics are all reused from its predecessor, I can give it a pass since they are Rayman 2 musics, but they could have at least put them at the right levels. And who thought it was a good idea to put the game over music at the last cutscene? And no music for the credits, seriously?

The DS version is the worst version for me. Removing the elephant in the room : the controls are atrocious, the game is not made with the D-pad in mind (at least Nintendo reworked Mario 64 DS to be playable with it), and the touch screen isn't practical at all. There is a lot of bugs. The musics are worse than the N64 version in the US version, and atrocious in the PAL version (seriously, what hapened here !?). I knew someone who told me he didn't like Rayman 2, when I asked him which version he played, he told me the DS version, that says a lot.

Finally, the 3DS version... I love it! :oops2: . I know that it isn't great, it's buggy as hell, it's a lazy port, but I've spend so much good times on it. First that's with this version that I have discover Rayman 2, and it's thanks to that game that I've fall in love a second time with the Rayman franchise (firts time was with Rayman 1 GBC) and that i'm now an huge Rayman fan ! :D . Secondly because I've spend so much time discovering all the fun glitches that this port have, it offered me a lot of replayability ! ^^ For those who want to see all the glitches this port have, I've made a lot of videos showing them ^^ : https://www.youtube.com/@DorianJoly/videos

Yes! Sequenced music based on the N64/DS tracks were meant to be in the game!

That aside, I agree with what you said overall! That's a very good detailed way to describe both what's right and wrong with all of these versions!
And yeah, your videos gave us many hilarious showcases of Rayman 3D's incredible level of polish!

I was just listening to this video comparing the two versions of this Rayman DS tune, and now I get it. Eeeeeeh the EU version just sounds like a bunch of loud (and maybe unsynchronized?) instruments, it's so bad it's not even funny. :oops2:

Tbh I'm not a fan of how either of those sound for the first half, but the second half is definitely way worse in the EU version

Just for the fun, I'm sharing here a 2016 video of the French YouTuber Benzaie (some of you may remind him as a member of Channel Aweome/ThatGuyWithTheGlasses a looooong time ago).

He played Rayman 2 on a gaming PC without looking at textures configuration, and the result is... interesting.

Thanks Mortamon Saturn for reminding me this video!

I was wondering if the video got deleted in just a few hours too! :oops2:

It sounds... even worse than what I imagined. :noelnoir: :beurk:
Now the world needs a full compilation of both versions' soundtracks so we can sentence the worst criminals to be tortured with it :bad:

I already told you, it's actually an early preview of Ubisoft's Rayman 2 remake they've been hinting at as "part of their exploration phase on the Rayman brand" :hap:
I may be joking, but I'm sure there's an alternate universe where this would be an actual Rayman 2 port Ubi would sell, on some weak handheld system or something...
