Nevermind, I tried to include Lord of the Rings as previously requested but quite obviously that did not work. :P

The last wooly mammoth is currently reported as being still alive and is known in the scientific community as "your mom"

That's right, the last population known from fossils was on Wrangel Island 4,000 years ago!

I'm guessing ice shelves are pockets of underground ice/frozen aquifers, which makes them unable to expand further. Sea ice does have the opportunity to grow in volume, so I'm guessing sea ice is less dense.

Hmm… Is it: An ice shelf is on land, meaning that if it melts it will flow into the sea and hence raise the level. Whereas sea ice is already taking up space in the sea so if it melts it won't change the level.

If anything, sea ice would take up more space than regular seawater, so that would raise the sea level too. :confus:

From Archimedes' Principle, sea ice will float so that only the volume of water with the same weight as the ice will be displaced. So when it melts and hence contracts, it won't increase the overall water level. But introducing the ice into the sea (like when an ice shelf slides off the land it's on) does increase the level due to initial displacement of seawater.

Right so if I understand this correctly, that principle applies only if the ice is already in the sea? Guess I learned something new!

Hmmm, going off from all the answers above, I’ll say that while both are floating pieces of ice (an ice shelf is just a floating landmass of ice is it not?), sea ice (it’s just freezing sea water) can float around freely, while ice shelves can’t since they’re usually connected to land in some way (I.e a coastline or a glacier that feeds it)

Maybe an ice shelf is frozen rainwater while seaice is frozen seawater?

The Jonster got it right! An ice shelf is simply the continuation of a (land) glacier, while sea ice is indeed frozen seawater. Can't say Pirez said anything wrong though!
