Re: The Teensies' General Knowledge Quiz – Season 10 - DaveRattlehead

Post by DaveRattlehead »

Unfortunately, none of you were correct!

The answer was the Treaty of Fontainebleau. There were political tensions between the king of Spain (Charles IV) and his son (Ferdinand VII). Napoleon wanted to take benefit of this political tensions, so he signed a secret agreement with Charles IV to invade Portugal. The French troops were supposed to simply pass through Spain, but instead they started occupying key cities with no resistance. The invasion was never a traditional invasion, since Napoleon never declared war to Spain. He simply played cleverly his cards and took benefit of a political situation. In May 1808, Napoleon forced Charles IV and Ferdinand VII to abdicate, and placed his brother Joseph Bonaparte as the king of Spain. That same month (May the 2nd) the Peninsular War started.

This question will also be about France, but this time we'll focus on sports. But don't worry, even if you don't know the answer, I think it's easier to make a wild guess!

That was a quick guess! Peugeot won in 2009 and that's the last time a French manufacturer won in the top category. However, the drivers weren't French.

Here's a hint for you. If nobody answers this question, we'll move to the next one on Sunday!

Keep in mind a couple of things...
-If I said "union of countries", it may imply a second country.
-Who knows, maybe Denmark was in that "union of countries"...

All of you can try again (well, everyone except Rsandee )

No need to answer again, because Norway was the country I was looking for! That Nordic union Greengoop mentioned was the Kalmar Union (Denmark, Norway and Sweden). However, the Kalmar Union was dissolved in 1532 and Norway was under the control of Denmark. This Denmark-Norway union was a very strong ally of Napoleon, but after his final defeat and several attacks of Sweden, the union of Denmark-Norway dissolved in 1814 with the Treaty of Kiel. Denmark ceded the rights of Norway to the king of Sweden. However, Denmark retained the control of Norway's overseas territories, which were Greenland, the Faroes and Iceland.
