Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
I do. I ordered the blu-ray version of the complete series of Death Note from Amazon yesterday. I use streaming services but I like owning physical media of my favourite films and anime.

I do! I prefer to have my movies/shows physically rather then having to pay every month to watch shows!

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
It's been a while since I bought a DVD, but I think I will continue to buy them occasionally for as long as they are available.
Blu-Rays, no. Trying to play them on a PC is a joke, and I don't have a dedicated player or PlayStation console.

Yeah if you dont care about extras i wouldnt recommend blue-rays, as DVDs just play the movie/show for cheaper and should last longer anyway. (unless theyre from WB from the years 2006-2008, then they are extremly prone to rot.)

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
Every blu-ray I have bought only cost €1 or €2 more or less than a DVD, blu-rays will also likely last longer than DVDs due to blu-ray discs using a hard coating on the disc and being more scratch resistant. Blu-ray resolution is also far superior to DVD resolution.EdgeRabbit wrote: Tue Mar 18, 2025 2:26 pm Yeah if you dont care about extras i wouldnt recommend blue-rays, as DVDs just play the movie/show for cheaper and should last longer anyway. I still definitely buy physical media, I have an avid collection of DVDs, ranging from random DVDs to an entire Family Guy collection
Not by much, but I still avoid them anyway because usually I don't have much money
You're pretty lucky to have that for yourself!
I thrift all of my DVDs and Blu-rays are more expensiveTriangulumDelta wrote: Tue Mar 18, 2025 2:59 pm Every blu-ray I have bought only cost €1 or €2 more or less than a DVD

I like the idea of having DVDs, but no, I don’t buy them any more. I have the diary of a wimpy kid trilogy DVD and some Pokémon/LEGO movie DVDs from when me and my brother was younger.

I think physical media is good, but there are some things you have to keep an eye out for such as disc rot, so those of you with substantial collections should keep an eye out and make sure you make backups regardless.

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
Well, no. I still have a DVD player stored in a box, but I rarely ever use it.
I tried to make backups of the DVDs I had with an old laptop that still had a CD-DVD drive, but because I couldn't swap region, it didn't work with most of them.

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
Streaming's all well and good until they decide to rotate, delist and censor stuff, so where we can we do indeed try to get DVDs and Blurays if we can help it.
Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
I still prefer media where possible. Like for example, even games remove features or songs as they re-release. They can't take the songs away from my original disc though.

I think the last DVD I bought was from Legend of Korra, and only because there was a special offer.

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
I'd like to be able to have a plex server of my own so we could have a few oddities at hand but we'd need a bit more harddrive space I reckon. Though my brother in law one has one.
Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
Yeah I made sure to get more, terabytes even. Things get larger as time goes on.

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
A friend of mine uses a single 12TB HDD for his, and I have an HDD array to give me 70~ish TB worth of capacity, which also keeps a clone of my SSD array's data just in case on my storage server. I use it for both my Plex and Emby server and overall data storage needs across my computers.Cairnie wrote: Sat Aug 30, 2025 6:21 pm I'd like to be able to have a plex server of my own so we could have a few oddities at hand but we'd need a bit more harddrive space I reckon. But to answer the main question, yes, I do my DVDs and Blurays still. I like physical media, and still putting them on my own media server.

So is buying Blu-Rays and ripping HD content from them actually feasible nowadays? I thought the encryption was too strong for that…

Re: Do you still buy DVDs/Blu-ray?
Oooh don't get me started on trying to view blurays in VLC. Sometime last year I was able to rip a bluray that came out in February 2024 with MakeMKV as even with updating the keydb database thing it must have been too new at that time and not added so I couldn't view it in VLC, ripping was my only way around it.

MakeMKV is a very powerful handy utility, check it out when you get the chance!PluMGMK wrote: Sat Aug 30, 2025 8:43 pm So is buying Blu-Rays and ripping HD content from them actually feasible nowadays? I thought the encryption was too strong for that…
The real challenge is just having a compatible drive for 4k UHD discs.
