Ahh that'd track, I know they tend to get turned off of RD, it not being turned back on after the fact does make sense.Fifo wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:44 pmMaybe they forgot to reenable it after the last RD? From what I see, it’s a pain because you have to do it for each (sub-)forum individually, so maybe it was left off deliberately…Master wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 6:47 pm I could've sworn the forums used to prevent you from posting if there was a post submitted before you submitted your own, was that disabled?

Re: Off Topic
Precisely, we disable it for Record Day, but it's such a pain in the backside to toggle it that we've tended not to bother turning it back on the last few years, unless / until it becomes a problem (which I guess it is now, so I'd better go do that, at least for this subforum…Master wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 8:19 pmAhh that'd track, I know they tend to get turned off of RD, it not being turned back on after the fact does make sense.Fifo wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:44 pmMaybe they forgot to reenable it after the last RD? Gotcha. Yes, solar energy is generated as DC, so it's put on the grid by gigantic inverters (IGBTs?) which try to follow the waveform of the grid as the frequency fluctuates slowly. The problem is if there are no mechanical generators to provide inertia, I guess it's just these inverters all trying to follow each other, which can cause the frequency to fluctuate too much, which makes it look like the grid's collapsing, so stuff trips. Syncons are part of the solution here, though I don't really know how far we are from being able to run a grid without 50-Hz turbines spinning in the background to stabilize it. This isn't my professional field either, though I kinda wish it wereDaveRattlehead wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:31 pm I don’t really understand the reasoning behind it. The government hasn’t given much explanation, but some technicians seem to have reached a conclusion very similar to what some German media outlets were suggesting, and everything seems to point to renewable energy (well, more than renewable energy itself, the electrical infrastructure, which isn’t prepared for it). Around 10:30, problems started to appear: some "oscillations" (small variations that indicate the energy isn’t stable). There was too much electricity generated from solar panels and very little from nuclear sources, which are the ones that help keep the energy "firm" and stable. However, by 12:30, those oscillations got worse, and there was no nuclear energy available to keep the system stable, so everything was shut down as a safety measure. Clearly, a lot went wrong here, since renewable energy should, in principle, be easy to regulate and it shouldn’t have reached that point. The technical side of what exactly failed to cause the situation is a mystery, and if it does come to light, it’s likely I won’t understand any of it since it’ll be something very specific, but yes, many of these situations are definitely a domino effect.
Of course, this will be another stick to beat renewables with – I happen to know someone who still collectively calls them "snake oil"…
And now this has happened – "cable fault" indeed (referring back to the video I posted yesterday

Yeah but you gotta understand I don’t have… a lot going on. I spend all my time on the internet and consider real life just “a second life”
