Yeah, I was speaking of Wish Cave and Purity Forest when I was talking about those dungeons! Level 1 dungeons are not great for me!

I think the last time it was really possible to "catch them all" was...gen 5 I think? Maybe I'm wrong.

Honestly I think it was starting to get a bit much already by that point, the amount of time sensitive event Pokémon introduced by that point was insane, and outside of cheating you'd be SOL.

Granted event exclusive Pokémon have been around almost since the beginning thanks to Mew and Celebi, but it got compounded by new mythicals every generation and there were a fair amount by Gen 5.

You never could legitimately due them darn mythicals, but all mythicals were obtainable in Gen 5 and 6, if you were regularly going to Gamestop.

Me neither, actually. I still haven't bothered to finish Shield or Violet, mainly because I had to borrow my sister's Sword and Scarlet to transfer Pokemon between those versions. Catching every Pokemon in a gen is a nice goal to have. It's much easier these days than trying to get every Pokemon in existence, which these days is pretty much impossible. Makes me wonder, when's the last time they used that ol' slogan of "Gotta Catch Them All!"

I only remember one person ever catching them all that I knew in real life, a childhood friend's brother. I remember they had 149, and they only needed one more, Kangaskhan. I was like oh yeah I know where to get that in my Pokémon Yellow game, it's in the Safari Zone, I seen it there. They were like WAIT REALLY! Can you go home and get it and then trade it to me? I was like sure, so I walked home and got it. I put the game on as they watched, as soon as I ran into the Kangaskhan they were like "OMG catch it, catch it!". Then I traded it to them and they were so excited like "I did it!"

...Wait wait, your friend lost your game, and your parents told you to keep your friends' game? Huh? Why didn't you just give it back? Or would they not let you?...Is there still a rift between you guys from the whole "You stole my game and wiped my save" thing?

Yeah they said to keep it because they lost mine after them paying for it. A case of his parents should get me a new copy of the game, and if not, I should just keep his game instead. I eventually gave it back myself despite this, but his parents didn't trust me anymore. Ironically I ended up how I am now while I haven't seen that friend in years, and they ended up living a bad lifestyle, going to prison, being on drugs etc. So it's a bit ironic their mother thought I was the bad influence at the time.

And you were 8. I can't blame you for messing with a Gameboy. When I was a kid and my Blue game really started to hit the sh--, I didn't think twice about my game freezing up and playing weird glitchy songs. I just went "Oop, something's wrong. Better reset the GBC." That whole battery leak started because of the S.S Anne actually...The textbox "The ship set sail." haunts me a bit when I see it. (I'm kidding, but it does make me reminisce about what that all set off.)

I just found this funny at the time, I clearly didn't mean it but it was so random how it occurred. I do recall Yellow randomly started deleting my save file for no reason at some stage, even one time it happened to me I angrily threw the game on the floor as a kid, and then when I put it back in the Game Boy, the save was back again. That actually didn't make any sense though, unless maybe there was bad contact with a cartridge pin on the Game Boy preventing it from reading part of the data and seeing the save. That would be very rare to happen though I think, but it was interesting. The game stopped forgetting saves after that point until eventually several years later the internal battery died for real. I just replaced it myself with a CR2032 and some tape. It's inside the cart so nobody will ever see it anyway.

You see, we were kids with a lot of free time. And I usually spent it playing outside, or playing video games. My siblings and I were lucky to get our own copies and versions of Pokémon. We'd play em' at daycare. In the car. At home. In the hallway. Everywhere and all the time. My in-game time was around 83 hours. I got all the badges a while ago, and would just wander about catching stuff. I met that glitchy Eevee and made it a Flareon, and then a lotta other stuff happened over time, and then my game kinda wouldn't let me actually play it at around 300 in-game hours. I didn't know my battery was leaking, but it probably corroded some stuff. That ship never came back either. I just wanted to see if it did, if enough time passed! Also, since I had a team of level 100's via that leaky battery and a glitchy Flareon, I figured I didn't need to fight the elite four or the champ to reach the hall of fame. I was already way above them.

I used to bring my Game Boy everywhere haha. I remember the glitch in Pokémon Blue and Red (it was fixed in Yellow), where you could go ask a person to show you how to catch Pokémon, then go surfing and you'd run into "MISSINGNO", which was a very weird glitchy Pokémon. It was a memory glitch and in your items, the item in slot 6 would become duplicated by a crazy amount. We used to do it with Rare candy or master ball, so we would just have all level 100 Pokémon and as many master balls as we wanted, so we could just keep catching anything, and legendary Pokémon weren't even a problem.

Funnily enough even though it was so fun to "cheat" like that back then, eventually it became a thing when I got older that it was all novelty and it was more fun to just legit raise the Pokémon and play the game properly. It was still fun to do at the time and a fun memory.

Funnily enough I could still use my Pokémon in Pokémon Stadium 1 & 2. Fast forward a bit and my team of free level 100's won the Prime Cup and took down Mewtwo. I was so proud of them!

Seems like you did it fairly, so nice work. I would like to get a copy of Stadium on my N64 and go through the whole thing. I played it a couple years ago in my girlfriend's at the time, it was a fun game.

But anyways, yeah. Not knowing better happens! Kids are kids.

Another example, my lil' bro as a kid thought it was a great idea to catch a ton of Missing No's on his Red game. That did not end well. He hasn't had much luck since with any copy of Red. (I thought he got bad luck from playing around with Missing No on his original copy. ) His 3rd copy seems fine though.

Haha. I actually didn't realise you had also mentioned missingno (I did during this response above). The first time I was told about it, the person who went to show me turned on his game and the save was corrupt. The first time I caught one, my trainer came out to a battle facing the wrong way (towards the left of the screen instead of towards the enemy Pokémon) and everything was all glitchy. I panicked and went to the PC and released the Pokémon, and thankfully after powering the Game Boy off and back on, everything was normal again. I do also remember one called gibberish M gibberish, and if you gave that one a Rare Candy, it evolved into a Kangaskhan on level 0.

I used this glitch too in fact, was so fun levelling all my Pokemon to level 100 heh.
I also used another interesting glitch to capture a Mew. And I didn't use the glitch just for Mew, I attempted to use it to catch all the Pokemon I couldn't get normally in one game. Was so much fun!

Personally, I still bring my Switch everywhere. I like using it on the go. It's like an alt when I can't bring my laptop out.

I can't wait til I get to this point where i can just shred Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2 with my personally trained Pokemon. I always tried to do the lower-leveled cups first. And apparently I didn't realise til later that those kinds of cups require much more strategy than the rest.

That's also the last time I really played a Pokemon game, I played some of Pokemon Sun and finished the story but that's kind of it. I don't think I even beat the elite four. Just preferred to do other things I guess. Gen 5 was amazing and it's very underrated I think. I loved what they did with the story and the difficulty was top-notch.

If it were back in the day I'd agree in saying Gen 5's underrated, but I think in these days it's been reappraised and I think there's a lot more appreciation for BW/BW2, at least from my own observations anyways.

Maybe I ought to replay them again...it's been a while. I'm still a bit miffed that Unova got skipped over for the Legends' series. While I do think Gen 6 did deserve something for missing out on a proper 3rd version to cover Zygarde, I would've loved to see a Legends game cover the backstory behind the brothers and the original dragon.

I used to find it a lot of fun at the time. I remember it used to involve talking to the man in Viridian City, and then I used to go to Cinnabar Island because the water was just right there, and just swim up and down until I ran into the glitched Pokémon. You used to know if it worked or not because the screen would go black for longer than usual before showing the wild Pokémon. It's funny that it was able to actually corrupt saves though depending on what the person did.

I have a Switch here but I need to actually play some of the games I never played, as I mentioned somewhere, I even have Super Mario Wonder unopened since Christmas.

I was last playing Pokémon Snap on mine, I found that fun to play too even though it wasn't all action based.

From the responses I've gotten, it seems people appreciate gen 5 now for being the games they are. Especially when you compare the later games....I'm still a little bitter that the Indigo Disk DLC was somewhat underwhelming (mainly because the game restricts you to the school itself).

Oh yeah I have used that exact glitch in Yellow. They fixed some of the glitches in this game, but they never fixed this one haha.

Yeah I did play the game before very briefly, but never actually opened my own copy of it to play. One day I definitely will though.

It's definitely got some cool music, even the Switch version of it. Of course, I didn't complete it fully, and I was playing it way more in Sweden than I have back here. I still will eventually go through it though, and yeah I really prefer platinum pictures.

It still is, really. But nowadays the concept of HMs is a thing of the past, and thank Arceus for that.

I don't like most of the things they introduced in later Pokémon games, but I can't blame them for ditching that. I imagine it was designed to avoid soft-lock, but it sure was annoying, especially for HMs that had no value in battles.
