Re: How's the weather?
Ahh the ol Fresher's Flu? That takes me back.
Pretty mild today, we've had bouts of rain but no major downpours.

Re: How's the weather?
It rained during the night, now it's partly cloudy.
Perfect for a jog during lunch break, since I can't go to practice tonight

It's always fairly common with the sudden change in the weather as well. I used to often get the flu or something as we got to Spring.PluMGMK wrote: Thu Sep 11, 2025 8:46 am Feeling the effects of the sudden cool off... Got a fairly serious sore throat. Of course it could also be the sudden influx of undergrads and their germs on the campus this week!

Re: How's the weather?
Fresher's Flu, great name! Not sure I've heard it before, but it describes it so well!
Though come to think of it, I probably got it even the years I wasn't in college…
Didn't get my walk in today, because it was too wet, and I was too sick and too busy. Honestly there was an hour when it was sunny so I could have arranged to go out, but I felt my immune system hanging by a thread, so I stayed in the lab.
And my car is affected by the change in weather too. Last night I forgot to charge it, but I thought I'd get another comfortable round-trip in so I didn't stress out too much. But the colder, wetter conditions meant my journey home used a lot more energy than it has been doing, so by the time I got home the battery was down at 2%!
At that point it stopped even giving me a range estimate, it just said "--- km"!
I've never ever let it get anywhere near that low before, and hopefully after this experience I never will again…

Re: How's the weather?
It might be a British term, its one I heard a lot back in my uni years.
I've been reluctant to walk also due to the wetter conditions, I wussed out today as it was pouring it down when I was heading home...but it had calmed down by the time I had settled home. Still I think in your case probably best to be taking it easy, rain or shine.
Ahh I didn't know you had an EV, I've been tempted to get one, but it's not something I'd be up for putting money for just yet, got other things to save for. How do you handle the charging, do you use mains when your at home or do you have to pop to a charging station? Or are you lucky to have a dedicated charger at home?

Re: How's the weather?
I got the car at the end of 2021 (an era of tentative end-of-Covid optimism), then we installed a 7-kW charger at home a few weeks later. It's single-phase and rated for 30 amps, so they were able to wire it up to the fuse board without any major modifications to the overall installationMaster wrote: Thu Sep 11, 2025 10:37 pm Ahh I didn't know you had an EV, I've been tempted to get one, but it's not something I'd be up for putting money for just yet, got other things to save for. Oh nifty, that's a rather convenient setup to have then I can imagine, did you get the car used or was it a brand new one?

Re: How's the weather?
It was a new one, a 2021 Hyundai Kona. I see plenty of 2019 ones driving around the place too, so it seems to be a fairly durable model (touch wood)!

Re: How's the weather?
Ahh interesting, I know one concern with EVs is how durable they are long term so that sounds rather promising. Not necessarily the sorta EV I'd go for personally, I think I'm more for the smaller Supermini sized cars. But I know there's models in that segment, the Honda-E looked rather interesting, but I think that might be a tad on the too small side for me
EDIT: Nvm, actually it looks to be about regular Supermini sized, I thought it was tending more towards regular mini/city car size.

Re: How's the weather?
I mean, technically my car can be classified as a sort of SUV (a crossover), which is not really ideal, but basically that format seems to be the easiest to stuff large batteries into while still appealing to the tastes of many drivers. I'd prefer something daintier, but then I probably wouldn't get one with a decent size battery
Re: How's the weather?
It's definitely getting colder out there now. It got down to 10 degrees Celsius tonight as I was coming home, that's the coldest I've seen it in a while. My room was only 18 degrees Celsius on the clock I have when I checked. It was literally anywhere between 25-29 all Summer, and pretty unbearable. Even though I love Summer, it makes a nice change that it's now just a temperature I can actually withstand instead of being like living and sleeping in a sauna.

Re: How's the weather?
Saunas are great though!
......if I'm in them for a short amount of time. I wouldn't to feel like being in one for long periods of time.
I don't like how quickly dark it's getting in the evening. I went out for a walk only for it to already be dark. I end up only walking 10 minutes in a grocery store.

Re: How's the weather?
Yeah I like the sauna too if you will go into it for like 10 minutes or so, then walk back out again. It's different if your room feels like that all the time, and you have to sleep in it.
I am not a fan of the fact the days are getting shorter either, it's gotten to the point where it's basically dark by 8PM here, and you can feel that it's getting colder and colder out. We're at the point where the days get about 5 minutes shorter each day here now, so it's happening fast. I kind of hate this time of year in that way since you're heading for Winter, but it's inevitable (unless the world just breaks and the northern hemisphere keeps the warm weather forever
). I love when it's the other way and you're getting longer days and heading for Summer. At least we have Christmas at some stage.

Re: How's the weather?
It was cold and rainy yesterday morning while I was doing parkrun, though it immediately became sunny as soon as I got back.

Yeah the weather has reached that point where the rain seems to catch you unawares, I've been hit while I was walking despite it being clear when I set off.
Re: How's the weather?
It seems to be raining a lot here lately on and off as well. I guess that generally happens here even in Summer sometimes, but Autumn seems to generally have a lot of rain.

Re: How's the weather?
Relatable! It’s happened to me multiple times this year, sometimes in the same month. And almost always the moment I walk out the door. Real fun times.Master wrote: Sun Sep 14, 2025 11:25 am Yeah the weather has reached that point where the rain seems to catch you unawares, I've been hit while I was walking despite it being clear when I set off.

Re: How's the weather?
All this talk of saunas is making me think of Sweden's Eurovision song from earlier this year
Anyhoo, agreed about the shortening days being depressing. Soon it's gonna be difficult to get up in the morning again, even if I am starting the day an hour later than I used to…

Yeah it's really starting to get noticeable with the days shortening. The past few days were also pretty horrible here, very windy and just raining on and off a lot. Now it's sunny today and is getting much warmer suddenly. Still just about 16 degrees though, nothing compared to a month back. It's clear how much cooler the air is though when even my room is cool in the morning instead of always being unbearable. Normally it's unbearable even when the window and door are open all night, now both are closed and it's still cool in the mornings. A temperature I can actually sleep at.PluMGMK wrote: Sun Sep 14, 2025 5:56 pm Anyhoo, agreed about the shortening days being depressing. Re: How's the weather?
I hope that will help improve your sleep schedule!
Meanwhile, mine has returned to normal so I'm fecked again.
Maybe my trip to the airport on Thursday could fix it.
Weather is still pretty hot around here, though not as hot as the past few months.
