Re: Rayman 3

It’s late at night but I think this game would’ve been a lot better if they went more into why exactly Globox attached himself emotionally to Andre.

Like, the explanation of “Globox is stupid” is a cop out to me tbh. It’s like his only personality trait in this game IMO, I think it would’ve been interesting if they gave Globox the personality trait of seeing the best in people, or being able to tell when someone is struggling. I know this game is silly fun, but I do think that if they did explore this idea a bit more that the game would’ve been even better!

But remember, this is my own opinion! I wanna hear what yall think of it!

Ok, then please give me a popular video game character with those two traits.

I think Globox does have those two traits, in all the games he appears in.

He's not too bright but has a good heart, and this quality is emphasized by the lack of intellectual acumen or fighting prowess.

Rayman himself is more action-oriented. He empathizes with other characters, but takes charge of the situation and tries to resolve problems that have a wider reach and affect many lives. He doesn't have time to be a personal therapist, whereas Globox is happy to drift wherever life takes him and has the calming effect of nature.

This difference between the duo makes them a natural pair.

What traits exactly? I can name a tv show character with those two traits, but I can’t think of a video game character with those two traits. I just throught it would add something more to the story and give Globox more depth. That’s all.

That’s what I meant. The stories aren’t supposed to get you really detached and emotional, they’re just here to explain the events that happen in the game, thus being empathetic isn’t necessarily needed for the character to be well designed.

Well, I am a kind of person who enjoys looking into the silly things I like a bit too much. I have over analyzed André a lol, and gone on several rants to my friends about it. It maybe just be the fanfiction writer in me wanting to add more spice.. but I do wish Globox had a little more depth than “oh he’s just stupid”. Maybe he could’ve been like Pinky from Pinky and the brain? Brain is smart in a scientific way, but fails socially. While pinky is smart with emotions, but cant do a lot of scientific stuff. This is a good consrast between the too, and I think Globox and Rayman could have something similar. Rayman is the one fighting, while Globox does the talking. Now keep in mind this is all my own opinion, and you’re allowed to have your own!

There can't be much of a story without feeling. The more the story becomes a mere "explanation," the less it warrants any existence at all.

I think Rayman 3's "story" is pretty garbage actually. The feeling takes the form of poor attempts at comedy as they try to heal Globox (though Globox himself adds lots of color to the game when you're actually with him at the beginning).

Sorry for the negativity but I think games should be praised for what they do well; in Rayman 3's case I'd argue that's more centered on the scoring system and satisfying design surrounding combat in general.

Yeah I 100% agree with Rayman 3’s story being terrible. Though I think games like that don’t need a compelling and articulated story, let alone a story at all. (Which was their mistake adding one in the first place imo.)

TBH i think the fact the game doesnt take itself seriously is also a problem, like for a comedy with low stakes its fine but IMO i think the games story wouldve been better if they took it a bit more seriously. I do enjoy Andre a lot though, hes my favourite villain and this is still my favourite game!

Well I guess it took Origins for them to realise your idea was better.

Despite that, I still really loved the gameplay of Rayman 3 and the aesthetics. If only we could have gotten a game that gave us the best of everything.

But only when the development was almost finished so removing the story made it more confusing :tssk:

Also the book says Michel wanted to add a bigger narrative aspect to Legends, but ended up being unable to do so… :mefiant:

I haven't kept up that well with things in regards to Legends, but is there any particular reason why he was unable to do so? Other than what I suspect is 'cause Ubisoft said so?

Considering how much of a mess getting a story into Origins was, perhaps Legends ended up starting off on a similar footing and prior experience led to the attempt being abandoned sooner rather than try to trudge along to the same messy conclusion.

Affirmative, I think that conclusion is quite sound indeed, Master.

Sad times indeed when the story was left a blimey mess. :tssk:

I'm pretty sure it was this, but the book was quite vague IIRC (presumably because they didn't want to say something this disparaging outright)

Rayman 3's story is really just an excuse to have us travel round the Glade of Dreams, and in that regard I think it fulfills its role pretty well.

You would think the Fairy Council would have been more heavily protected/guarded in Rayman 3 after the robo-pirates blew up the Heart of the World in Rayman 2.

Just started playing this game and the first half of the Fairy Council has such a soothing theme to it that I could quite literally fall asleep to it if I wanted to.

Meanwhile Rayman looks like a golden retriever that sometimes scratches the back of his head a lot, which leads me to believe he has fleas... /jk (joking)
