Which of these Linux distributions are you guys willing to use in the future?

Post by FanzotheBanzo »

With Windows 10's support being cut off by Microsoft and some user switching to Linux distributions due to Win 11's obvious flaws, I came up with the question for those who are willing to try a Linux distro or just fed up with the unnecessary bloat that was added onto MS's 4 year old operating system.

The one I'm considering and have used on some machines is CachyOS which is based off Arch.

It currently powers my AI server and an old laptop of mine.

I don't claim to know that much about Linux distros, but I thought KDE Plasma was a Desktop Environment, not a distro?

Oh yes, I hadn't noticed that, you are correct...

Also I haven't heard of Linspire in years, is it still a thing?

Heh, you know more than you may realize, but yes, that is indeed a Desktop Environment, much like GNOME, XFCE, and others that I cannot think of from the top of my head.

I was just in the middle of voting, then I realised this. Then I was going to say it until I realised you already did.

I do happen to use KDE Plasma as a desktop environment, and I use Arch also.

EDIT: Anyway I'm only voting for Arch and Debian. I'm not too fond of Ubuntu (despite it being Debian based), and Mint isn't much different here. I prefer plain Debian if I will use anything based on it.

Mint at #1, Fedora/Debian at shared #2. Arch Linux at #3 because my gf is somehow able to use it and I might learn a thing or 2.

Oh yeah, another one that is an option, that's not on the list is Steam's SteamOS distribution. This could be a good option for folks to consider as well.

As it stands, isn't SteamOS still predominantly only for specific devices? I know you can deploy it on other hardware but it's a pain to get working.

I thought it was supposed to have been fully released by now, was it not, still?

As far as I know it's still not had a general release, just for the Deck and certain other handhelds like the Lenovo Legion.

It's been some time since I mained Debian (or a derivative), since I've just been so used to using Arch for the longest time. I used to enjoy trying to maintain LFS and I'd probably even like it now to some extent, though if you manage to break something on there you're kind of done for and it could take you the day to fix it. I remember how long it would take to compile everything if you had a lot to update, and you would also have to make sure to update things in a certain order or you could also break something. :P

I remember when I was using OpenSUSE a lot on a laptop, and eventually I went Fedora. I had to do something special for my Asus ZenBook for the audio to work properly, I cannot recall what it was at this point, though. If anything the most pain in the butt thing to deal with is Discord and their infinite wisdom of updating and forcing you to have to update, even though all they keep doing is adding clutter to their software.

I think I recall you mentioning OpenSUSE and Fedora to me before, and I used the latter for a while because it simply just worked for me. The next time I tried other Debian based distros again, they just worked, whatever had changed between then. Maybe I was just really bad with Linux at first and made silly mistakes.

I used Ubuntu distro, but several Ubuntu flavors including Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (XFCE), and Lubuntu (formerly uses LXDE, now LXQt). Rather I also tried different linux distros such as SliTaz, openSUSE (formerly SUSE Linux), Vine Linux, Linux Mint, and some more distros.

There also included Ubuntu community flavors including Ubuntu Cinnamon (Cinnamon from Linux Mint), Ubuntu Unity. As for Ubuntu GNOME, they have been discontinued making last version was 17.04, Ubuntu GNOME would later transitioned to the Ubuntu distro starting in 17.10, Replacing Unity Desktop to GNOME Desktop.

One other linux distro i also tried is Porteus Linux, Parted Magic (for managing partitions uses GParted). There are also some other linux distros including Slackware, Mageia Linux, Mandriva/Mandrake Linux (discontinued).

Speaking about Ubuntu Daily Builds, I'll ask why.
Ubuntu also does offered Daily Builds, whereas experimental and unstable, likely upcoming versions such as 26.04 as shown here

I later on I Uploaded on Internet Archive to preserve some daily builds of Ubuntu, though partially. Including such Alpha/Beta builds (unstable) like 23.10 (20230505 daily).
