Rayman 3 regional version differences

Post by RaymanfanCZ »

Hello fans,
For first time, I finished this game in English version, and I was shocked how bad is english voice acting in this game when compare to czech dub. Actors in english sound childish and they talk like almost in jibberish style like in Rayman 2 pc version, for example, three doctors dialogues are hard without subtitles. What surprised me, Czech version has addional enemy in Fairy Council, second level, there is Slapdash enemy in the start when you spawn there, and you cant evade his first meele attack :D (I think it is mistake in game codes in this regional version). I attach link to my videos where you can her voice acting in czech and scene with addional enemy. Let me know you opinions :)

The additional enemy is a well-known quirk that I believe was first documented with the Polish version. You can read more about it here, but essentially, you have the main version of the game, which features English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, and then separate, fully localized editions for Czech, Hebrew, Polish, Russian and Slovak. All of these (I think) include the extra Slapdash, likely because they're based on an earlier build. Note that there's also a Korean version, in which they only translated the audio, but I'm not sure which build it's based on.

Overall, people seem to like the localized versions a lot. I know the Polish one got a lot of praise, and I think vnheard told me that they hired the same writer (Bartosz Wierzbięta) as for the Shrek series.

As for the English dub itself, I feel that it totally pales in comparison to the French one. Not only did a lot of jokes get lost in translation (or were wilfully toned down), but I also find that Globox's high-pitched tone really doesn't match the character as well as his goofy voice from the French version.

I'm curious, which voices do you prefer in the Czech version?

Thank you for informations about versions. To be honest, I prefer all voices over English, except Rayman himself. His voice is very deep in Czech and not suits him. Other characters are perfect for me André is brilliant, his laughing is much better, Globox sounds more mature and not like a lady in English, and Knaarens voice is clean and you can understand their lines, but It can be due to reason I played this game since childhood in Czech dub. Only Rayman's combat and acrobatic sounds I prefer, but his voice in dialogues are bad in Czech.

The additional Slapdash is an interesting case. He does not appear in any demo version, so he was not intended to be present there early in the production. His placement seems random, and it is (probably) impossible to avoid his attack after the cutscene ends. I would presume that this enemy is a result of a developer error.

It would be interesting to investigate how much the regional builds differ in comparison to the global versions. For sure it is easier with the current tools and knowledge.

Well, I played recently global version for comparison, bcs I know every single thing in Czech version, but I didnt noticed another difference like Slapdash. But I noticed things like different lip-sync in cutscenes that work better with Czech sentences.

Nostalgia certainly plays a role, but I know quite a few people who, having grown up with the English dub, still prefer the French one nowadays.

The lip syncing was really bad in the French version. I wonder if that's also the case for the other languages of the main release?

And one minor issue that Czech version contains is there is no "Thank you for playing, you saved world!" like in English. There is just "num_" or something like this. And 3 sentences in game are in English, so it was default language for Czech directors.

Now I played game with Slovak dub (my neighbourhood country) and their dub is pretty bad when compare to Czech. Czech dub have its own Rayman voice in combat, whle jumping, Reflux when getting hit and these little things, but Slovak kept it in English and addionally broke Globox’s lip sync (he has all time open mouth).

Only tangentially related, but do you happen to have the Czech manual for the game? It's currently missing on RayWiki.

I found it, I have PDF manual and complete walkthrought manual in Czech language all on my original CD (3 discs). Where should I upload it? And if you want I can upload cover art on PC box, it has Czech sublitle "Hoodlumská hrozba", plus Playman logo (distributor in Czech and Slovak rep.), or also cover art on discs.

Great news! Try uploading the manual on this page. If it doesn't work, just use any file sharing service and I'll upload it for you. It probably makes sense to have the cover art for the box, too.

Thanks a lot, I'll add all this to the Rayman 3 page soon. This will also be helpful to document the Czech translations.

This is so exciting! The Czech manual looks awesome.

I kept hoping that there is some version of the Russian release that includes a manual or at least a PDF of it, and that I would be able to find it. Sadly, now I don't think it's the case.

Worth noting that the additional Slapdash also appears on all copies of the Mac version; most likely the regional PC builds are based on a later version and the Mac version is in turn based on that.
