Hello, y'all!
I share here with you a portuguese fan translation I did alongside Haruka and with the help of people from the Rayman scene, RayCarrot and Rorias.
I share here in the trailer what to expect from the dubbing as well.

Hello, everyone, it’s been a very long time since I last typed here! I take the opportunity to give a quick greeting to everyone In the current community and to promote this translation project that I was invited to participate. It’s part of our celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Rayman franchise.

I was responsible for the in-game text and cinematics scripts translation prototypes, Rayman franchise consultancy, playtests, gameplay video recordings and overall revisions on changes/adaptations that Rubinho did for the translation. :)

This final result wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for additional help we had. We would like to thank the following contributors:
  • Daniel Guerreiro, a Portuguese voice actor who recorded the translated script lines of the Magician
  • RayCarrot, for technical help and special game fixes including full support of the Portuguese alphabet be correctly displayed in the game and data conversion
  • Mumm-Ra STR Brasil, for technical consultancy on PS1 source/romhacking
  • Rorias, for the Raynimator tool

Interesting how this coincides with the recent release of Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition, in which the achievements were translated to Portuguese for the first time. They went for slightly different translations for Band Land ("A Terra das Bandas") and Picture City ("A Cidade das Imagens") though. Were you aware of that and what was the decision process for the names used in the fan translation?

We didn't know about the Brazilian Portuguese achievement names :o ! When I bought the 30th Anniversary release on Steam they showcase in English for me.

As for the names, when I begun writing the translation prototype I analysed both the English and French scripts. It was the same process back when I developed the European Portuguese Rayman 2 translation for PC/Windows systems. The francophone version was helpful for situations where the translated English name sounded a bit off, too long for the character space or not as logical as the French equivalent. This was the case for Pink Plant Woods name, where I used the French name (La Forêt Primordiale/The Primordial Forest). I was also mindful how the first Rayman Origins English trailer adopted the French term and never went back to the original English one.

Interesting to know that the Brazilians named the Band Land on its plural form, we did it in singular. Concerning Picture City, my prototype suggested "A Cidade das Imagens" since both languages use the same term. When Rubinho did a general checkup on the files and sent me over prototype builds to playtest, I noticed the change and questioned him why "Painting City". While it's true there's a lot of paintbrushes in the level I still believed it was more source-material accurate to use "Imagens" as there's other details that reinforce this would be the most correct decision:
  • Rayman Designer, its Mapper and further MS-DOS core game expansions coded these levels as "Image".
  • Accordingly to the very recent new information included in 30th Anniversary Release's Making Of section, Rayman's 1993 Design Document confirms the initial concept of the several worlds being based in different informatics sections, one of them being Image.
Despite of my founded arguments, Rubinho still went ahead with the alternative naming alleging "translation freedom". I also suggested that "Candy Chatêau" would be named "O Chatêau das Delícias", basing in the French name. It wasn't used as Rubinho was determined to exclude all foreign words with exception of a few character names, so he adapted as "O Castelo dos Doces" ("Sweets/Candy Castle").

I would say that the most interesting adaptation here was for Eat at Joe's, especially when Rubinho let me know that it was possible to change the establishment's sign textures and light animation. I suggested "O Diner do Joe" ("Joe's Diner") as a short character number adaptation that still makes sense.

There's just one minor issue here: I know that back in 1995, the Portuguese videogame distributor ECOFILMES translated the game's manual for SEGA Portugal in the SEGA Saturn copies. Sadly I don't have it and nowadays it's difficult to find some surviving copy of that. I do intent to locate it if any day one pops up so I can scan it to prevent it to become lost-media but also because I want to confirm what were the "official" translations for the worlds names so I can suggest Rubinho to update the build if we do find inconsistencies. When I got my hands on the ECOFILMES's Rayman 2 manual once, I updated my translation files to match some of their names included in it to be closer to official material considering this company was the national distributor of Ubisoft games for over a decade and there was at least one game that was fully localised in European Portuguese in 1997 (FR: "Les 9 Destins de Valdo"; PT: "As Aventuras de Vasco").

As a last trivia, although the PAL version of the game was used to apply the translation work, Rubinho went for the NTSC cover and manual translations especially because the latter has much more information than the European counterpart.

I hope I cleared the doubts. :)

I think the translation only shows for the Brazilian Portuguese locale, and not European Portuguese. You can read the full list here.

Translation is a creative process in its own right, and there's no single right way of doing it. I do however agree that "A Cidade das Imagens" makes more sense, in that it's more faithful to the original French name. As for Candy Château (and not "Chatêau", although that's a creative Portuguese-looking adaptation of the French word :mrgreen:), I was never a huge fan of that name and I understand why someone would use the native word instead. "O Castelo das Delícias" might have been more faithful to the original, but "O Castelo dos Doces" certainly doesn't sound bad at all. If anything, I would probably have pushed for Band Land to be called "O Céu Cromático", though. :lol:

There wasn't full consent on my end about "A Cidade das Pinturas" and "O Castelo dos Doces" for the reasons I explained in my previous post despite of ending to let it pass after my final translation review. It was interesting to see what the Brazilians did for the Achievements names, it's really the first time I see them. I thought their only work was for the 30th Anniversary user interface of its menu, the documentary subtitles and the 1993 design document. They did a great work fully translating the latter, it made things easier for me to read such a big amount of new information in few hours.

The "Chatêau" was an obvious misspelling :oops2:, you understood that! I still find curious how the English localization team back then kept the "Château" term instead of translating into "Castle". "Doces" means "Sweets/Candies" so it's pretty much the same meaning as the English source although I would have opted to be closer to the French with "Delícias".

That's still worth a debate 30 years later :lol: . I like the name but it never made 100% sense to me given the central theme of Music! Even for the second level of The Blue Mountains I had to choose between English's "The Hard Rocks" and French's "Le Chaos du Cauchemar". The decision here was obvious. :lol:

It's not going to be easy to find a good condition copy. It was already cool I managed to find both for Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 because until very few years ago I thought it was never distributed here by ECOFILMES. They are reprints tho, with a yellow frame saying "Topgames". I do know that Rayman M was because back in 2002 I bought the PC copy brand new in Telheiras' Toys 'R' Us. This edition had its cover and manual translated by them and the poster (that was around for English and French copies) was embedded in the manual's end itself, probably as a way to economize on paper and printing. And only a few months ago I also discovered there was a ECOFILMES print of PC version's Rayman Raving Rabbids 1 too, but I never spotted it on shelves at the time of release!

Now the true challenge is really this one for the original game. PlayStation manuals were never translated and inside my knowledge they didn't do it either for DOS. I don't even think that Jaguar was commercialised in our market given how niche this system was. But SEGA had a very strong presence in Portugal and as a way to fight against the piracy problems, they sold game copies here with the "Garantia SEGA Portugal" sticker-stamp and including both the original manual and a black and white translated manual.

That's good to hear! Did you find any interesting translations for characters, places, objects or other in-game entities there? You make me realize I need to document all this now.

It's true that both English terms here are more evocative of the places they represent. I guess I'm just too used to the French terms, having grown up with them!

If I remember well they maintained the original nouns accordingly to what's shown in the English document, I could always double-check this later.

Actually, there's a situation in Rayman 2 that I still believe that the French name makes more sense than what was done in English: the third Sanctuary's name. Even Clark's ailment was more detailed in the francophone version, I remember being surprised when I was comparing the scripts for the Rayman 2 translation project because it was the first time I realised what actually caused Clark to get sick. The English never explained it was a bolt!

Despite of having originally grown with the English translations of the games, for cases like Rayman Revolution and Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc in more recent years I prefer now to play them in French simply for having a higher quality in the voice acting.

Hey Haruka, long time no see! :)

For me the "chromatic" sky makes perfect sense since it refers to "chromatic scales" you play on an instrument, as well as the colourful nature of the place…

Wow, ok, I was interpreting the term in the visual arts optics. I didn't know it had a meaning in the field of music, that's really interesting. We keep learning something new everyday. :)

Actually, come to think of it, there's another Rayman link to chromatic scales: in timed Rayman Arena battle matches, the last segment of the music (in every map) is in fact a chromatic scale ascending from A2 to C3!

Oooh that's cool. Those little notes in the end of every battle mode of Rayman M/Arena are melodic details I've always enjoyed. They never get old :D .
