Because it was too expensive to put limbs on him in the original game. They were very low budget.

I can, the fact that he's limbless just because of a low budget doesn't really bother me XP Rayman wouldn't be Rayman with limbs o.o The Rayman games would be pretty different if he had limbs, he wouldn't be able to throw his fists at people for instance! D:

It seems that no limbs is much harder to code though.

Not necessarily. With limbs, they would've needed to keep him restricted in his animations, but without limbs, you can move the body around a little more freely. I'd say it's easier.

It's easier to have less things. Thats why the graphics on Rayman are good.
